Our house will be 30 years old in January. We bought it in 2000, over the years we have done sooo much! Got rid of the wall to wall carpet (tile floors), replaced the door hardware from gold to brushed satin, painted entire house inside and out, remolded both bathrooms and kitchen (between 2018-2021). And we’ve done so much more. Our house does not look like it’s true age!!
I find it so funny that you don't like screen doors. They let the fresh air in! I love it when the cools or warms enough to open the windows and doors for the fresh air. But the screens keep the critters out!
I have to disagree with screen doors. In the summer, we have to have screen doors. I live on a farm with a walnut orchard. Took my screen door off and left the door open for air - went to do something out in our field only to come in and fine chickens having a siesta in my house. I put the screen door back on.
Not mad about anything in this video - all true! Even though my house still suffers some of these aging issues, I can't deny the truth of your advice here! Thanks for another great video. (Altho I just remembered - I'm an old librarian, so now Jack is in trouble for his glasses on a chain remark!)
Love it! I’ve never been sure if your house chose you or you chose the house. In Australia builders still tile about 3ft of the area next to a glass sliding door along the lounge room. My home has carpet for the lounge but around it is wood floor. To walk straight from the hall to the dining room you have to shift your position so you’re not walking on the lip of the carpet defining the lounge.
I’d been hoping the moth balls joke would resurface! Your home is so fresh and it makes me take in a deep breath of calm every time I see that gorgeous lounge room. I’m sure it’ll never become dated. I heard Peter Walsh say that if a room is cleared, a kid will dance or run around it but we don’t do that as adults. Best argument for decluttering ever made! 😊
Talking about the vinyl tiles. How do you think hardwood floors would hold up to 9 pets and 3 large tanks of fish? I needed water proof floors. So, I went with a light gray concrete looking tile. Sounds awful! But, when people come in...they love my home. It's cozy peaceful and calm. As well as beautiful.
I always keep in mind that these design tips are extremely broad and won’t work for everyone. Hardwoods are amazing, in general, but definitely aren’t a great choice for everyone. I chose wall to wall waterproof, vinyl plank flooring in my home years ago and it’s been amazing. It held up wonderfully when my kids were young, when my three poodles were pups. Now that my kids are off to college and my dogs have settled down, we’re in the process of installing maple hardwoods. Both choices are fantastic. It all depends on your lifestyle.
I am a 64 year old woman living alone with 4 indoor cats. What fabric would you recommend. I need a 86- 90 inch sofa and 2 accent chairs for my space in my condo. I’ll take all advice from listeners too!!! Thank you ❤
Totally agree. And one does have to challenge ourselves also. And a tip. I always buy second hand, but designer furniture, I get the same money for the furniture when I sell it as when I bought it. It has been a lot of trial and error. I have a smaller home (Europe) and the wall color can change the whole room.
My ex wanted to keep the stained timber window frames the same and I wanted to paint them, and keep the shed the same colour when extending it. I wanted it a natural colour and paint the rest the same colour. Best thing I did when painting the lounge was to spend $45 on new plain trim to replace the old fashioned trim that kills your upper arms where it is on an outside corner.
This was such a great video to watch. I loved how you guys show how much of a team you truly are. I giggled the entire time. I do adore your content of design and personal style and have given me great content to revisit while designing my own spaces here at home. Please keep producing this type of content because I absolutely love it! And Jack's neutered moth's balls comment was a plus!!!!
Can you paint the interior doors/trim in matte when color drenching or do those things need to be in the eggshell? I have some doors and trim I’m thinking about painting myself since it’s so expensive to have a painter do it but I’m a little afraid I’m going to ruin them 😬
I’m in an older home and i love it over time we’ve brought it current that big wooden chunky stair banisters had to go for a more sleek modern vibe!!! I I’ve modern cottage i didn’t know it was a thing till you mentioned it modern meets warmth that’s what my home exudes🙂great video
What do you do if your on a fixed income and can't afford hardwood floors .I want to get rid of my carpet, but on a slab and I don't want tile.Is good luxury vinal that bad?
Loved this video!! Both the tips and the family moments! Your front door area is gorgeous! Which maple tree is that and how do you care for it? Also please which edging rock is that peeking up from the sidewalk? Thank you for this video!!❤
Another great video! I recently downsized from a custom home to a townhome. I wish I could change the front door. It’s solid black wood with a glass black screen door. HOA so they all have to match. The glass door lets in light (only 1 small window on the front main floor) so I have the door open all the time. But I hated people seeing in so I added fluted film for privacy and now at least it looks a little more modern. If I had my choice I’d put in doors like yours (modern). Thanks for the tips and laughs!
This is probably one of your best videos ever. I agreed with most of it, except for the glass/screen door. Some people have small kids or pets. This can be a security door on those cases. Love my woods floors where I reside now, but in the tropics, tile is the way to go. #CommingBackFan
We have a 90’s home saturated with the oak of the past. I have no idea where to start as it’s overwhelming so I have tried to update everything else in hope to make it feel better.
The hubby and I are at odds regarding the glass/screen door. We have a beautiful, black, front door with a white glass door blocking it. I DESPISE IT. The husband loves it. I told him I’m taking it off to paint it black to match the front door. In reality, I’m just never going to put it back on. Let’s see if he ever even notices 😂😂😂

Those things you mention are things of my childhood. And just remeber that one day your things will age you.
Completely agree.

Exterior screen doors are great for bolting dogs and security if someone comes to the door.
The lighting and hardware also helps with updating
So true!!!! These make a massive difference!
Your home is so stunning 🤩 ❤

Jack....you should take your act on the road Buddy!!😂😂😂😂

I have a 1996 Colonial with red brick front and beige vinyl on 3 sides. Do I reside?
Jack, you made me laugh out loud!! 😂😂
Great video!! I agree

That is so wonderful to hear!!! What part of Europe are you in?

Interesting and instructive video! 😂

As far as screen doors, what if you have a screened in porch and can’t remove the doors. What do you do?
Just secured my Blumene Face Pro for a Christmas gift! Thanks for the code!

Thank you so much!!! The tree is a Japanese maple from a local garden center.

Wow, thank you so much!!!

I heard V say she starts from the ground up.
Paint the walls in matte? Did I hear that right? Seems like it would be hard to keep clean…. Somebody help me here.
My house is from ‘82 and I NEED to do allll of these things!!! Hahaha the outside of our house is YELLOW with MAROON TRIM …. HELP
Yellow &maroon you seriously need help friend..hmm🤨luckily we have V
You guys are great together and Jack is gem…totally in love with you Valentina.
Yes, if your house and clothes look old and worn out then you look old and worn out.
If the moths were neutered the problem would sort itself within months

Remove all screens. They never look good.
