  • I had permission to ride & film this elevator. By their request, the location will not be disclosed.
I have been wanting to visit this place for YEARS, and I finally had the chance to go here! The elevator isn't completely original (as I hoped), but this is one of the best modernizations of a historic elevator I have ever seen!
This is a VERY tasteful modernization! This elevator looks largely like it would have originally, the main exceptions being the replaced hall stations, the added on COP, and the replaced annunciator. The annunciator is likely functional, but I didn't think to try this. The original car switch (lever/handle), and some other original fixtures are preserved, the scissor gate is preserved, the doors are still manual, and surprisingly the hoistway door interlocks are still a "manual" type typically found on car switch operated elevators (you have to pull a rod to unlatch the doors, and the doors can NOT be unlatched from outside).
This elevator is currently used as the service/freight elevator, but was likely used as a passenger car originally. The elevator next to this one is the current passenger elevator, which received a heavier modernization with solid automatic doors (the original cab interior is preserved excluding the car switch/original fixtures if I remember correctly), but I didn't ride that one as they had limited time to show me the elevators.
Fixtures: Llewellyn car switch (not working but preserved), Elevator Research & Manufacturing
    Year installed: Circa 1924
    Date of recording: May 2023

Woah, I’ve never seen anything like that switch before!
