When I was 12 I had a REALLY strong fever. For days, my temperature wouldn't go down and I wasn't even conscious most of the time. So my dad gave me a really cold shower (winter, night, living by the ocean) and I screamed because it felt like I was being stabbed all over my body. My favorite part of that Drake and Josh episode was when one of the parents (can't remember if it was the mom or dad) asked the doctor about an update on the surgery. The doctor looked at her charts and said "I'm sorry. He's passed", and the parent freaked out. The doctor checked the charts again and realized their mistake and gave them the correct update from the correct file 😂
I remember an episode where Drake and Josh thought Walter was cheating on the mom, so they tried to secretly patch things between them, and they (Drake) made waffles with cumin in him. Unfortunatley, Walter was allergic to cumin, and started choking and gagging and stuff. I wish he reacted to that. Josh: "Cumin is a Mexican spice. I said *cinnamon* . CINNAMON!"
I'm glad Dr. Mike said anyone who sends their sick kids to school are doing the wrong thing because of something that happened to me when I was in the 3rd grade. I woke up that morning feeling feverish and told my mom, who insisted I had nothing wrong with me even though she didn't check and I did NOT have the habit of pretending to be sick to avoid school, so she sent me off. My teacher was staring at me and finally said, "Hey, you don't look well," and I told her "I told my mom I felt like I had a fever," to which she replied, "Yeah, I think you need to go to the nurse's office." I did, and it turns out I did have a fever (I don't remember what it was, but it wasn't dangerous), so I was taken home by a friend of my mom's (Mom couldn't drive at the time) and my mom ended up taking care of three sick kids that day; myself, my older brother, and my neighbor friend whom my mom had babysat since he was small. Needless to say, she never made that mistake again.
Something similar happened to me in highschool!!. I had a raging sore throat and my mom was at work so I texted her asking if I could stay home due to a raging sore throat, but she didn't text back right away so I just got on the bus and went to school. After my first hour class which was PE/Gym I just felt horrible. My throat burned like I had swallowed molten lava mixed with glass shards and rusty nails. It was horrendous, so I went to see the nurse and I asked her if she could just give me a tylenol or send me home or something, even though I just wanted to catch up on my schoolwork during fourth period since I was so behind from missing school before due to illness and didn't need more work to do to catch up, but my throat was just burning like lava. The nurse politely told me she couldn't give me any tylenol, but to just please sit and cool down since I was in gym. I sat there long enough to cool down and since I still feel so horrible she took my temperature just to be safe and it was 102. She told me "Sweetie, I'm sending you home. You have a high fever and I'm a mom, I can just tell you're really miserable". I agreed to go home and I called my Nana to come get me and the nurse explained to her what was going on when she walked in. My mom felt SO bad that she couldn't reply to my text due to work and my Nana felt so bad that I was so sick. That was legit only the second time in my life that the nurse sent me home from school so they all knew I was really that sick lol but the next time I told my mom & nana I just really didn't feel good they absolutely listened and let me stay home instead lol😂.

My mom was a single mom also from the time I was 8. If I needed to stay home, she just let me, but would check in. She knew all I would be doing was watching tv or sleeping, and I could do basic food for myself. She only stayed home if I was really sick, or needed her help (like throwing up and I wouldn't know what to do.)
@catloverKD when I was older, my mom also let me stay home, but otherwise, I was SOL. Of course, once I was older, she also started making me babysit my siblings while she was at work, too.
Let me guess. You're from the US? Kinda sad honestly, if a kid is sick they should stay at home. My country has paid sick days for the parents if the kid is sick.
I had strep 9 times in 13 months. The doctor told my mom and I if I came back with it one more time in the next few months we would have to look into taking my tonsils out. I never had it again. Thankfully.
Through middle school and then into high school, my brother and I seemed to get Strep' easily half a dozen times a year... Then we got to the Doc's office for a swab test, only they were OUT OF STOCK on the 15 minute versions... SO we settled for the 24 hour test, and got results the next day that we had Staph' infections... AND then the first round of antibiotics didn't help... and then the second... and the third... and tetracycline didn't make a dent!!! It turned out to be MRSA, back in the early 90's... and it was something our Doc' hadn't seen in his 30+ years of practice. They didn't even know Staph could be so resistant... Finally, something called "Sulfa-drugs" were prescribed at about 10 TIMES the cost of otherwise ordinary antibiotics, and at the time, we were told "These are THE baddest antibiotics in existence. If this doesn't work, we don't know what the hell to do." It was two weeks of crippling diarrhea as they WIPED OUT our gut bacteria on top of the staph'... BUT finally, we got clean swabs from the office, and apparently there was a fair number of medically resistant Staph' infections through the county... Keep in mind, we hadn't even HEARD of medically resistant bacteria, because it was entirely theoretical at the time... It would be months before we were relatively normal again, BUT I've never gotten strep again after that... In fact, I haven't had much of an infection at all since then... I've been food poisoned, but that's a different tale altogether... ;o)
4:36 before I got my cochlear implant a few years ago, I was in the hospital bed reading about it before they put me to sleep to do the surgery. I have recently upgraded my external hearing device to the Cochlear Nucleus 8 :)
THANK YOU, DR. MIKE, for stating what I've been trying to tell the men in my life for decades!!! Men can just cut out soda and lose weight, but it is sooooo much harder for women!!!
A medical TV show that would be great for you to review next is Doc Martin, it's a British comedy drama that's just finished it's latest series, he is a GP (family medicine Doctor same as you) with a fear of blood, the show is medically accurate, and to top it off it is hilarious
@@rockaholictomYes she actually requested to be on the show. Apparently she's friends with Selena Cadell. There was another actor who also asked to be written in. The guy who got shot stealing eggs. He's a familiar face but don't know his name.
9:13 @doctormike PLEASE tell this to schools & school districts that use "attendance rewarding" policies to penalize students that miss "too many days" (including excused absences for illness)! Our local high school excludes students from attending functions like dances if they have more than a certain # of absences for the year, including excused, & rewards students with fewer absences with being exempt from taking course finals. As a parent of 2 kids in a school district that is short on teachers at all grade levels & illnesses running rampant weekly, it is infuriating that my child will be penalized for not coming to school ill.
9:22 I once told my mom I felt really fatigued one day and she sent me to school anyway and ONE OF THE STAFF ACTUALLY NOTICED IT so I got to go home. yay
The one thing Mike slightly missed when talking about there being "no withdrawal symptoms from soda" was caffeine addiction, which *definitely* exists and for me personally, can give nauseating migraines when withdrawal hits which is why I cut caffeine out of my life completely.
We kept honey sticks or packets in our nurse's office for when our diabetic kids came in crashing. This was a great lifesaver when I worked in our school system.
@@PhoenixMoth It’s a stick filled with honey. So instead of getting honey in a glass jar or the bear(you know the one) you can buy plastic sticks that look like straws with honey in it. Makes for good on the go travel snacks. They sell them in grocery stores. You’ve never seen them? They also sell them at Ren Faires with different flavors too. I love honey sticks.
I lost it when the doctor was acting like a wrestler with that kid. Or the scene where the girl kissed the boy and you made that face. Love you Mike! ♡♡♡

True and gross: a friend of mine from a Catholic family was the eldest of a large family. She came down with chickenpox. Her mother took the secretions from the sores or pocks or whatever you call them, put the goo on crackers, and fed them to the younger children so they’d all get it at once.
I think you’re taking about Dan Schneider, who was their ringer show-runner. It seems he def has a foot fetish. If you’ve never watched Victorious, that show’s all the proof you need.
I don't know why, but I wanted to see his reaction to Spencer playing with Freddie's toes singing "this little piggy went to market, and this little piggy got hit by a truck".
Hey Dr. Mike. Got a story for you. When I was little(early 80s) I suffered with horrible infections that landed me in the hospital several times. One time in particular, my fever was so high the doctors did, in fact, put me in an ice bath to lower my dangerously high temp. Not soon after the Pediatric ENT took one look at my tonsils and booked me for surgery the next day. He bumped a patient it was so dire. After the tonsillectomy, I can say that I have rarely been sick since. The 80s! What a time to be alive.
Oh yeah, with the tonsils I think he said they now don't take them out that fast... I have heard of a fever calling for an ice batg, perhaps everything he stated is why they stopped? 😅 I too an an early 80s kid
I was waiting for him to review Big Time Rush episodes cause I'm sure there are quite a few to review since Logan would often sprout out medical stuffs. They even have an episode with the "vacuum bubble" like the one he reviewed on Ned's Declassified. Sadly he didn't review BTR but this is still a good video lol
Man, shaved Dr. Mike makes me remember the good old youtube videos of his. Him being oblivious to many of the medical memes and him going way too accurate over a meme
Dr.Mike I'm so happy you made these. My son enjoys watching you. He introduced me to your videos asking if I'd watch because you reminded him of myself reacting to wounds in movies. I'm a former nurse but I'm also Mom So you being "a cool guy" and Dr I get to do the "see, I told you so." Look and point in a fun way. It's also been a fun bonding time
The pulsating tonsils reminded me of when my tonsils gave me issues, and sometimes felt like they were "throbbing" I had "chronic adenotonsillitis" where I had tonsil stones, which occurred for about 5 years until I was able to get my tonsils and adenoids removed. Every doctor I went to told me "It's perfectly normal".... I don't think it's normal to be awoken 2-3 times a night with insufficient breathing and gaging out tonsil stones.
Josh Peck (Josh’s actor) is in that Oppenheimer movie that’s coming out July 21st. I’m curious as to how his performance will look. Robert Downey Jr. is also in it.
I remember going nuts over that kissing scene because I was a Creddie shipper. Now I just cringe over it, not only because I know what the final outcome of that episode is, but also because I know the actors were uncomfortable with those scenes. They were all really good friends on set, but there was always some sort of romance angle being shoehorned in.
Wooooow Asides from all the medical advice and everything… this video was so nostalgic! It was so wonderful for my sake to see Kennan and Kel once more, happy memories came back to me 😅✨ And ngl, my bestie had serious problems with soda, that could be her easily! Of course this was when we were younger and she didn’t had to worry about her health 😅
5:20 When I was 3 I had a partial tonsillectomy because my adenoids were so enlarged that they were pushing against my eustachian tube that I could not hear, and subsequently not talk, was sent to dozens of specialist and department heads, but none of them saw it. The dr we went who saw them did the partial removal and I was back in school the next day, talking and hearing
9:05 ‘ That fucker will send you home right away‘ keep rewinding and listening to it dozens of times anyone else hearing anything other than this???👈😏🤪🤪🤪🤪😅
When parents send their kids sick to school I want to scream. My students are so little, all they do is cry and stick to me, and of course I'm not going to be a jerk and say "Get away from me, you're sick" so I just end up getting whatever they bring in because they need comfort and then I'm out and miserable. 😑
My mom and grandmother dumped me into a tub of ice water once when I was a child. I vividly remember waking up from the shock of being dumped into that tub and screaming and trying to climb out. And they just held me down.
I guess they were just doing their best with what they knew. But now medical experts know that cold water can cause shivering, which can actually raise the body’s temperature. Parents and future parents: If you ever need to bring your child’s fever down, check with the pediatrician and if they tell you it’s okay and if your child doesn’t have any allergies, give them some children’s Tylenol or ibuprofen.
In times past, with considerably more primitive medical technology than we have today, high fevers (103F+) were particularly distressing, and considered dangerous. Doctors at some point (at least through the 60's and 70's in many places) would even recommend ice-water baths to cool the patient, AND it was to avoid brain damage, since the fever WAS recognized as evidence that the immune system was working... Growing up through the 80's and 90's, myself, it was explained that you really only needed to avoid a fever getting higher than 105F to avoid brain damage, and once you're even in that territory, it can be very difficult to control on Tylenol or Ibuprofen alone. Don't forget, they can both get toxic in high enough doses... AND during the 90's we connected Rye's Syndrome with treating fevers from the flu with aspirin, which was a tad more effective than Tylenol on many cases... SO ice-baths were a thing even into recent history... I'm not sure what fancy ideas are in the mainstream of current thinking, but by the time you get to 103 or 104F you should DEFINITELY be on the way to a Doc' no matter what else you've tried... Just be sure to list the home treatment and OTC products, so you can clearly communicate everything to the Doc's when you get there. They don't care if you tried some dubious home remedy that they're sure won't work... They just want to know what it was or involved so they don't accidentally poison you to death on a conflicting drug or chemical. ;o)
Pink Eye Pineapple or Rash Raspberry would have been my pick 👌🏻
Oooh good flavor ideas. Maybe you could make an expansion pack ad???

@@elien1902 yep, and it's absolute garbage that parents don't get help like that. What country are you from?
I had strep 9 times in 13 months. The doctor told my mom and I if I came back with it one more time in the next few months we would have to look into taking my tonsils out. I never had it again. Thankfully.
That strep had a conscience.😂😂😂
Must have. I'm glad it did. I was 9 or 10 then. I'm 31 now and never had it again. Even when my kids have had it. I was spared.
right
Through middle school and then into high school, my brother and I seemed to get Strep' easily half a dozen times a year...
If this doesn't work, we don't know what the hell to do."
It was two weeks of crippling diarrhea as they WIPED OUT our gut bacteria on top of the staph'... I've been food poisoned, but that's a different tale altogether... ;o)
That's a mess
4:36 before I got my cochlear implant a few years ago, I was in the hospital bed reading about it before they put me to sleep to do the surgery. I have recently upgraded my external hearing device to the Cochlear Nucleus 8 :)
3:33 Crazy how we saw blood in that show.
THANK YOU, DR. MIKE, for stating what I've been trying to tell the men in my life for decades!!! Men can just cut out soda and lose weight, but it is sooooo much harder for women!!!
Lmao sucks that your genetics screwed you over in that sense

A medical TV show that would be great for you to review next is Doc Martin, it's a British comedy drama that's just finished it's latest series, he is a GP (family medicine Doctor same as you) with a fear of blood, the show is medically accurate, and to top it off it is hilarious
I love me some Doc Martin! Sigourney Weaver was a guest on it!
yeah and there is midsomer murders

2:47 to my icarly fans you’ll get this… but I thought Freddie’s mom baby proofed the entire house, and made every inch of the rooms “Freddy proof”

Well, I mean, if you quit drinking caffeinated sodas cold turkey like I did, then yeah, you'll get headaches and what not.

tHE HAIR... looking fabulous, Dr Mike. Also, the confused, slightly disturbed expression on his face the entire time was sending me! LOL
The one thing Mike slightly missed when talking about there being "no withdrawal symptoms from soda" was caffeine addiction, which *definitely* exists and for me personally, can give nauseating migraines when withdrawal hits which is why I cut caffeine out of my life completely.
I went through that also. I gave up caffeine 2 years ago and went through 2 weeks of agonizing headaches. Wasn't much fun 😊.
Oh and by the way, I haven't had a headache since then🤔. Makes you wonder, huh?
I agree. I feel like any type of addiction can give you withdrawl symptoms - emotionally and physically
We kept honey sticks or packets in our nurse's office for when our diabetic kids came in crashing. This was a great lifesaver when I worked in our school system.
Whats a honey stick?
@@PhoenixMoth It’s a stick filled with honey. So instead of getting honey in a glass jar or the bear(you know the one) you can buy plastic sticks that look like straws with honey in it. Makes for good on the go travel snacks. They sell them in grocery stores. You’ve never seen them? They also sell them at Ren Faires with different flavors too. I love honey sticks.

Dr Mike first of we all are grateful about the effort you and your team puts in. There's a lot of people who got inspired by U. Keep the good work going God bless you. Love you ❤
True and gross: a friend of mine from a Catholic family was the eldest of a large family. She came down with chickenpox. Her mother took the secretions from the sores or pocks or whatever you call them, put the goo on crackers, and fed them to the younger children so they’d all get it at once.
Dear lord, was she always doing insane things???

I can never tell what time period Doctor Mike's videos are from without looking. His face keeps changing, and his room doesn't.

I love that you share your knowledge from being a doctor with us, it's very helpful :)
I love how watching back on these, it totally makes sense the one dude was into feet after the Nick logo changed to a foot.

REAL
Hey Dr.
Dr. Mike's hair is so fluffy rn, I like it 😄

Josh Peck is also in the ICarly revival.

Alot of actors are uncomfortable with kissing scenes
Yeah and I notice a common occurence with feet *cough* Dan *cough*
Not only that, Nathan Kress girlfriend was watching them Kissing... It was btw her First visit... Yep, that was definitely uncomfortable for all 3.

When parents send their kids sick to school I want to scream. My students are so little, all they do is cry and stick to me, and of course I'm not going to be a jerk and say "Get away from me, you're sick" so I just end up getting whatever they bring in because they need comfort and then I'm out and miserable. 😑

@@scarletttyson4622 I had a high fever
I guess they were just doing their best with what they knew. But now medical experts know that cold water can cause shivering, which can actually raise the body’s temperature. Parents and future parents: If you ever need to bring your child’s fever down, check with the pediatrician and if they tell you it’s okay and if your child doesn’t have any allergies, give them some children’s Tylenol or ibuprofen.
My mom's home remedy for a super high fever was to rub alcohol on my arms and chest. It stunk but damn did it feel good.
They just want to know what it was or involved so they don't accidentally poison you to death on a conflicting drug or chemical. ;o)
5:13 the year I got evaluated to see if I needed to get my tonsils out, I had over 12 cases of strep throat by May
