    I have a (U.S.) locomotive engineer license qualified on both steam and diesel and I was privileged to have gotten to ride the 3801 'Long Lunch' train in 2000. Conveniently the train was on the only day open when my wife was not busy competing as a member of one of the U.S. teams at the 2000 Sydney Games so I did not feel guilty about ducking out to ride the train. 3801 is a beautiful locomotive and was well-maintained. However, it was not just the engine but the cars were also beautifully restored and clean. It is a real class operation.

    I remember riding the old red electric trains. Does that make me old? I guess it does. I also remember the last of the steam trains in country Queensland. They weren’t beautiful Art Deco Streamline engines like this stunningly beautiful locomotive. This one looks like something Hercule Poirot would ride. It has all the poetic beauty of that age, almost a hundred years ago now. Those country trains had flat black noses, and red behind. They weren’t pretty, like this one, they were built for toughness, but not for speed. These green speed machines look like they are trying to break the stem speed record, even when standing still. It is credit to all who worked to restore it to its former glory.

    I could picture the 3801 being in Thomas & Friends (not All Engines Go) as an Australian character. Due to it's green paint and streamlined shape, it would be a male character and it's name would be "Bean". Having a voice similar to Russell Crowe and his personality being a kind, old and proud Australian with an endearing sense of humor!
    Officially named 3801. Affectionately known as...
    Bean the Great Australian Engine.

    Where did they get the Steam Loco Drivers, now that Steam Locos have become defunct?

    • @jswaggart01
      @jswaggart01 3 года назад +6

      Going back to the days when steam locos started being withdrawn, some locos were kept in working order and a few select drivers were able to maintain their steam qualifications and over the decades that knowledge has been passed down so that there were always a small group who could still drive and teach the next crop of drivers for the future. It’s very challenging. You begin training as a fireman first before progressing to driver. You have to pass difficult written and practical exams. Same goes for the vintage electric train you saw running alongside, although not as difficult as a steam loco. Hope this helps.

    • @mdgfb05
      @mdgfb05 3 года назад +1

      It's unlikely 3830 will be steamed in the near future. Firstly, the boiler/firebox needs to be completely rebuilt, like 3801, which is extremely expensive. Secondly, it is owned by the PHM at the moment, meaning they fund the restoration, which is currently unlikely with their move to Parramatta.
