I completed a 100 Mile Ultramarathon 4 weeks ago and when it got hard, lonely, or too much... I sang this song, over and over and over, to keep the darkness at bay and announce myself to the Universe.
    Odin watched me, and approved.
To distant shores, forever yours. Beautiful song.

I absolutely am in love with this song and I found out recently I have Norwegian ancestry so it's just nice to have that little piece of me especially on days where I feel bad about myself and just being able to hold on to something like a song like this that is so beautiful to make me feel like I am strong and give me the strength of a warrior's amazing and I never heard it in the language of this I think it is actually the most beautiful version of the song I've ever heard and probably the most beautiful song I've ever listened to other! Thank you for putting it out there for us to find and listen to!

    Lyrics and translation:
    Þat mælti mín móðir
    at mér skyldi kaupa
    fley ok fagrar árar,
    fara á brott með víkingum
    standa upp í stafni
    stýra dýrum knerri
    halda svá til hafnar
    hǫggva mann ok annan
    hǫggva mann ok annan.
    Þél höggr stórt fyr stáli
    stafnkvígs á veg jafnan
    út með éla meitli
    andærr jötunn vandar,
    en svalbúinn selju
    sverfr eirar vanr þeiri
    Gestils ölpt með gustum
    gandr of stál fyr brandi
    gandr of stál fyr brandi.
    -
    This said my mother
that I shall buy for myself
a swift ship and of a pretty oar,
    to journey away with freebooters,
to stand tall on the prow,
    steer a worthy merchant-ship,
direct it thus to the harbour,
strike one man and the other,
strike one man and the other.
With the file he strikes out, hard against the steel
of the prow-steed on the flat path,
with the chisel of the snowstorms,
the opposite-oared giant of the twig,
but the cold-made one of that willow,
    the merciless one files
    Gestill's swan with gusts,
this wand of steel against the ship's beak
this wand of steel against the ship's beak

The best version I have seen, also pronunciation wise. The only little tiny mistakes you made (and I'm nitpicking) are "ey" in fley is pronounced /øy/ and "fn" in stafni and hafnar is pronounced /pn̥/ (with voiceless n), which is remarkable, given that most artists just blend modern Icelandic pronunciation with Old Norse pronunciation and their native language making a mess. Good job on every level!

Excellent visuals and perfect voice really augmented the tone of the song.
When I first heard this version I couldn't help thinking that if you change the voice just a little bit to a more nasal sound it could easily be Native American.
Then I reflected on how traditional native American songs share so much in total and timber wheels Chinese music.
Or maybe I'm just making all this up

Lovely recording, and also an extremely useful reference - thank you. To me it sounds like you speak a modern language descended from Old Norse, but that you also have taken the time to learn Old Norse. I'm definitely going to copy your pronunciation if I do another recording of this myself, since Jackson only shared pronunciation for the first verse (and I really don't know enough to figure it out for myself from scratch).

Hail Oðinn! Friends, "Þat mælti mín móðir, at mér skyldi kaupa fley ok fagrar árar ... etc." is not simply an Old Norse poem, in fact (as many of us hopefully know), it is a lausavísa by the great skald from Iceland Egil Skallagrímsson. I think the author must be mentioned, or else we may face some copyright issues when in Valhalla. You know Egill.
