Thanks - this seems a lot more doable at home! definitely going to try once I get some cream of coconut; I bought a pineapple/coconut juice the other week and it gave me some yearning for pina colada (not to mention the earworm of the song!).
Love me a Pina Colada. I'm always a little sad when I order one out and about, and you end up with a crushed ice one (same with a daiquiri). Definitely a fun favourite!
My wife and I played around with your recipe and came up with this. 2 Plantation 3-Stars, 2 Dole pineapple juice, 1 Coco Lopez, 1/4 Lime Juice, 1/8 Giffard Orgeat. The lime adds a touch of tartness to the pineapple and the orgeat adds a subtle nuttiness to the coconut. I plan to try some other rums with this but we're very pleased with the results so far.
As a Puerto Rican myself watching this video, I'm sad I did not see a Puerto Rican rum. Don Q is the best rum for this drink. It's good you mentioned both bars that claim the origins. Great video!

Since Coco Lopez or Coco Real isn't available everywhere and, like you say, it's more expensive than its base components, I suggest making your own. It's super, super easy. Just combine a can of unsweetened coconut cream with the same amount of simple syrup (1:1 water and granulated sugar) and a pinch of salt (1 teaspoon). So I finally made this drink and had one for the first time in my life and sobriety has never been so difficult lol. Your specs made this a delicious boozy fruity cocktail. I used coco real but amazing drink, too short
Ah Piña Colada - such a beautiful drink. I don't have access to Coco Lopez, but some commercial coconut creams are too sweet, so I personallyI prefer unsweetened coconut cream and adding simple syrup to taste. In any case it is a wonderful drink. Great video again!
Totally fair enough, it is full on but I love it haha. When I was wee my Granny used to give me half cans of condensed milk and a spoon, so this is kind of like a tropical version of that treat 😜
Nice work on this one, appreciate the history lesson up front too! One tip I use (when I make Painkillers) is to pour the coconut in the jigger first, then use the rest of the ingredients to help wash away the remainder that never seems to get poured out. Well done as usual! When is the Painkiller video coming?! (More lovely history there too)
Everyone is asking for a Painkiller, will have to be on the list! Good tip, I haven’t worked in a bar where I’ve been making lots for a while so I forgot about that one!
I know we talked about a hurricane part before. But the way they keep rolling in. You might want to try and find one and come over and enjoy the crazy at least once. Lol I do have to say this is a different style of pina colada. Every one I have ever had in a bar or restaurant were slushy or like a milkshake. Thats around the gulf coast both in Florida and Alabama.
I bought Coco Lopez for the first time the other day, because the liquor store didn't have Real brand, which is what I usually use. I guess it's OK, although I cut my finger on the damn can. The Painkiller is my usual tiki drink, but if I don't have OJ I make a Pina Colada instead. The rum I usually use is Mount Gay. I like your proportions here. I typically use 3oz of pineapple juice instead, but that's mostly because it's half a can so it works out well for making it at home without "extra" pineapple juice to keep around. I guess I could still use equal amounts of rum, but that leaves the coconut cream a bit approximate.
I have tried fresh pineapple and canned juice and to be honest, there is no difference in the end product. I make my own coconut cream from coconut milk and sugar. I think I'll make a couple alcohol free versions this weekend.
why does the coco lopez look like its the oil on the bottom of the can? in other vids it's white like it should be and i would def not warm it as a bartender, you need to keep it cold and then mix it well before using
Have you ever used Coco Lopez or something similar? Coconut oil is solid at room temperature, so it often separates. Warming does nothing to it other than make it easier to mix through (I’m not talking about actual heating here!), and of course shaking it brings it back down to the desired temperature while emulsifying- just a wee hack I picked up while churning out hundreds of Pina Coladas a week 😊
@@BehindtheBar yes i know coconut oil is typically solid at room temp and in the summer its liquid but this is suppose to be a cream of coconut and is more soft even when solid its easy to mix so it does not separate into oil and solid fat ,looked like you only used the oil part instead of remixing it properly as it should be like white milk
@@ARCSTREAMS I mean I’m not sure what to say haha, we filmed in the middle of winter so it was separated, and I did mix it through (Coco Lopez is sort of a pearlescent creamy white, not a pure milky white). Behind the camera Josh here. My daughters and I made what we dubbed a "Beach at Sunset" by making this without rum then floated cranberry juice on top (basically using up the left over ingredients!). The sweetness & tartness was a fun combination, and it looked pretty cool, but not sure if you're thinking for kids or for yourself. Cara might have some advice on something a little more balanced.
I definitely agree with Josh, this one is a great one to literally just leave out the rum and add either cranberry or something like lime to give it an extra bit of bite. Tiki drinks in general are good for that as they are quite fruity and forgiving - a favourite at the bar is equal parts pineapple and grapefruit juice (90ml), 20ml orgeat and 30ml lime. But it’s definitely a good episode idea!
I use the Barrachina recipe. A good Piña Colada is hard to beat. A bad frozen one made with a mix is awful. Hope people who’ve only had the bad ones give this a try.
Give me a Margarita any day! I loved my first Pina Colada like I loved my first Aperol Spritz, but it is just too sweet and can't imagine ordering one again! And it was a dreadful song, dreadful. Lovely rum, mind.

I’m sure it would!
Cara, do you have any bartender secrets for making virgin versions of cocktails? Assuming it's not as simple as "don't put booze in". Video idea?
Hey by the way are we alone in the universe??

You’re always my #1 lovely 😊
I made it to 3:50 and gave up..., she won't shut up and make the drink.
Hmmm breakfast drink ?
@@cynthiasummers8180 Well if you have problems with that sort of thing may be you should not be watching... Stay safe and happy
Pina colada originate in bangladesh my frends🙏🏿
I use the Barrachina recipe. A good Piña Colada is hard to beat. A bad frozen one made with a mix is awful. Hope people who’ve only had the bad ones give this a try.
Keep it simple!
Give me a Margarita any day! I loved my first Pina Colada like I loved my first Aperol Spritz, but it is just too sweet and can't imagine ordering one again! And it was a dreadful song, dreadful. Lovely rum, mind.
😂
