The way the hat works is that the projectile has to actually hit the hat. During the hat spin cycle if the projectile being thrown is in front of Kung Lao and the hat is behind him it will not deflect it.
Everyone is saying tempest is shit but I think it's the best variation cause he literally has the best anti air in the game also you can shut down your opponent from doing any wake up attacks with the spinning hat and also he has huge combos even after they needed him there is a meterless 40% combo that starts midscreen
I think any hat spin can catch a projectile rather than just the EX version. It isn't a reaction or reliance tool. It's supposed to be something that is just 'there' and mostly used for approach but can possibly block a projectile as well.
I dont know if it matters anymore or whatever but after seeing you had trouble ex-ing the teleport I decided to test it on my own. The trick it seems to me is to press r2 or right trigger before you press up. So you would be pressing down, then quickly r2 then up to perform the ex teleport.

I've unlocked everything for King Lao so far except... the Reverent skin (I think that's what its called..zombie Lao) Do you know how to unlock this yet? I've heard 30 win streak in King of the Hill? If so man that is going to be way too difficult. That would have to be one of the hardest unlocks in the game. But anyway, thanks again.. I'm learning a lot fo new stuff from your tutorials KI and MK... like i didnt know you could cancel the forward punch string into low buzz saw...that's great!
His spin is way OP. Wakeup with armor as combo starter and that insane range? Come one....He is fast (Dive kick), has teleport, mix-ups and that f***ed up spin? Seems unfair compared to other characters...

Omnis Unlikely, it looks like that the hat needs to make contact with the projectile in order for it to cancel it out. But like he said, it's probably easier and safer to just block it rather than rely on a move to cancel a projectile that can otherwise be easily blocked. I mean sure you take the chip damage but at least you don't run the chance of eating the projectile in hopes of the hat making contact with it.
Don't Be Fake If you're plus, that means if your opponent throws out a five frame move the same time you do, yours will hit and his wont. The same but vise versa for when you're negative
tempest is kind of shit don't you think cause if your going to use a bar of meter and the hat goes away and it doesn't hit projectiles good enough well then what the point. but nice breakdown
Actually tempest seems the best, I mean besides the hat blocking the projectile aspect which is I agree useless, the hat shield seems very good to like rush in, I mean since it protects u, you can dive kick or teleport in safely. The shield can also be used to do cross up set ups, just as hatrick. Also the ex spin in tempest can be used to do a lot of combos and catch whiffed moves.
***** yeah i agree, tempest lao seems overall the best, it has the most damage too. and also you forgot about his hatspin which could help to safely dive kick or teleport in if done correctly.

In Buzz Saw, you can hold down 2 to keep the hat spinning in place for his High and Low hats, letting you perform mixups.
