Got one this week. It's my 4th sewing machine but I love it already! So simple to use and astonishingly well made for the price. Great review 👍 mine is LS14s
Great and helpful review, i have this machine, going to try my hand at quilting and have purchased a walking foot. love this video, will be catching up on some more :) xx
Hi Kim, thanks for a bright and breezy video. Have just bought a Brother HC14- same as yours but single kneedle only. Only bought it to make some blinds for the conservatory-boiling hot in the summer. After that probably wont use it much if at all. Still cheaper than getting them made up though. Your video inspired me to google my model No. and print off the info manual-more use than these "one sheet" manauls you get these days. Anyway, thanks again keep up the good work. Great stuff.
Hi Kim thanks for this- I got this machine- I am a total beginner- I wanted to know what are the stitch lengths for say which stitch number is a 4mm stitch? just need to know all the lengths of the stitch numbers on the dial- thanks so much. Gina x
What machine would you suggest for a beginner and also plan to work with thicker fabrics? I've had my eye on this machine but after seeing your honest review I'm a bit worried it won't be the right machine
I have this machine! For years I used my mom's old 80's Toshiba but it died and I was forced to buy a new one. I'm really happy with it. It's a smooth, realatively quite sewer. Neat stitching and easy to move about but I do wonder how to use the box at the front; is there a specific way to pack it? My stuff keeps falling out:-\
It’s a sturdy sewing machine 😊 by the box at the front, do you mean the bottom panel you can take out? Whenever I take mine out and fix it back in, it stays intact...
Do you know which needles work best for this sewing machine? Thank you so much for sharing this video!!! You have no idea how much you are helping me x
+About My Fro The machine comes with a pack of needles but if you need to get extra, it uses 90/14 for domestic sewing machines. One side of the needle head is flat on one side and rounded at the other.
Hi, I am a beginner looking to buy my first sewing machine! I have a question though about the thick fabrics you said that this sewing machine might struggle with: So if I want to sew a waistband elastic on the inside of a skirt for example and then cover the elastic with fabric, that will essentially be three layers (I hope I am making sense with what I am trying to explain here!) WIll that be something that this machine won't be able to handle then? Thanks in advance, can't wait to start my new diy project!
It should work for waitbands with elastic inside. It can sew up to six layers but will struggle with anything beyond that. For fabrics like thick wool, felt e.t.c it will see up to four layers but anything more than that might become a challenge for the machine
Can you embroider with some of the stitches on the machine? I'm getting a machine for a beginner, something I can use for many many years. I want to learn embroidery properly but the machine I'm looking at online has a lot stitches didn't say anything about embroidery capabilities. Think it's from brothers too.
Hi Kim, can you help me please. I have a Super Jeans 26 but no matter how I try I cannot sew on stretch fabric which is a pain. I've tried a ball point needle adjusted the tension up and down but all it does is chew the fabric. Any advice please.
@@KimDave Hi could you please share what you sew and how well the seams held together. A feew details on what settigns for what fabrics would be awesome.Thnk you.
I have had a brother machine for a few years now. Started using it more regularly this year. It just broke down on me. The needle is stuck in the down position and the hand wheel won't turn. The repair will cost as much as the machine itself costs, so now, I am considering buying a new machine. I've been told that most brother machines (cheaper machines made mostly of plastic) will do this after a while. So, I want to try a different slightly higher-end brand next, but I'm not even sure where to start, and I don't want to spend too much money.
Oh that’s a shame. Maybe you can check out some more expensive options for brother or singer. Read reviews also before buying because then you have an idea of the performance of the machine. Hope you find something you like 🙏
I have a Brother JS1410 - which the same as the Brother LS14 with a different name. The Brother sewing machine company have the habit of putting the same name on a number of their sewing machines. I have had to put oil in the bobbin area, as it was making a grunting noise and would sew unless I forced it sew and ignored the grunting noise. Once I put sewing machine oil in my Brother JS1410 it started to sew better. It still makes a small grunting noise, but I am not worried about it. I am not getting it fixed - as I paid only $30 AUD for this cheap sewing machine, and it is not worth getting it fixed - as I think it is somewhat cheaply made. I found it second hand on gumtree. This sewing machine was selling at Spotlight for a few years up till 2018 for $269 - what a ripoff! It has been renamed in Australia as the Brother JV1400 and selling for $269. The manual for the Brother JS1410 says not to put oil sewing machine - as it was oiled at the factory with all the oil it will need. Information online about the Brother LS14 also says not to put oil in the sewing machine. I find it strange that a sewing machine needed oil in the factory, but will never need it again, and considering that it has oil holes on the sewing surface. I have a few sewing machines and none of them tell me "as the sewing machine was oiled in the factory - it will never need oiling again." It has served me well for $30.
Had this sewing machine for 6 months. Okay for basics projects. Not the best as always catches on things. Not happy as it broke today when I was making a skirt. now I've has to upgrade to a better model sewing machine. This is okay for basis of you make clothes etc or use your sewing machine regularly then this isn't great for heavy use xx
To change the stitch width, there is usually a dial (round button you can turn) with the different stitches indicated on it and allows you to change the stitch length. Mine is on the front of my machine. i have used this machine for stretch fabric and it worked fine.
I haven't tried it yet for wig making so I can't say for sure. However, I have been able to sew both stretchy and woven fabrics. It is able to sew up to 4 layers for not very thick materials.
I have been able to sew all of the fabrics mentioned above with this machine. The fabrics that it struggled with were thick bonded materials ( a fabric with two layers glued or sewn together)
Hi hun. Amazing video! Was you able to sew dresses, trousers and other stuff with this machine? I’m thinking about buying it but I’m not too sure if it’s only useful to amend rips on clothes or I’ll actually be able to to make outfits with this ? x
Yes it works well with those fabrics. I have sewn panels of faux leather and it was fine. I have also worked on felt, scuba e.t.c. and it worked perfectly.
I’ve just ordered this from John Lewis and really pleased to see your positive review - Thankyou x
Thanks, I haven’t used a sewing machine in over 20 years and your review made any dread of sewing again fade away. I’ve just purchased one!
Hi could you please share what you sew and how well the seams held together. Thnk you.

The third stitch is BLIND HEM stitch. Brothers machines are great! they also make Baby Lock machines, which is what I have.

the S stands for the sport version.
Thanks for everything you are the best.

Have you try using plastic foot or teflon foot. Or you can cover under presser foot with ducktape
Hello I hope someone can answer my question but can you use this machine for silk or satined fabrics?
I have used this machine for both fabrics and it worked fine.
You have to adjust the tension ( to a lesser number) for it to come out nice 🙂
Kim Dave thank you for answering I'll buy the machine

Always get a metal body sewing machine. Try a janome. Most sites now let you pay in installments monthly which is how I got mine :)
is it worth paying £16 for 4 year break down cover guarantee? thanks
Can this machine use overlock or overcast foot ?
+Baldnold I personally haven't tried either yet because I have an overlocker machine
Great and helpful review!
Kim brilliant review want it as my back up ! Do you oil it ? Please
Thank you Mary 😊 I haven’t oiled it since I got it 🙈
