I think it's incredibly unfair that Destiny's point kept being framed as "a society without religion." That's not at all what he's arguing; his point was that people should have the choice to worship or not worship whichever God/gods they choose. It's really sad seeing Milo like this. The fact that he stooped to personal attacks, and is definitely on some sort of drug in the middle of a recorded debate, beyond even this new crazy self hating ideology he has, makes me feel like he's hurting in a very deep way. He could have said all kinds of outrageous things to provoke all kinds of different people (christians and republicans are especially easy to trigger the fuck out of, if you make an earnest attempt), but the "edge he chose to be" said something about him as a person. I remember watching Milo when I was fresh out of the closet back when he was the "provocateur" or whatever his title was and, I admit, I was a fan. He was well spoken, and even if I didn't agree with him on every point, he seemed to know who he was, what he stood for, and the message he wished to espouse. Now? I can't help but feel pity for him. Seeing him, for the first time in years, reminds me of myself back when I was trapped in the closet: numb, incoherent, and medicating himself in any way possible to pay homage to the institution that has, supposedly, "raised him from perdition." Being gay or, for that matter, not being a part of an organized religion, doesn't mean you automatically live an immoral/amoral lifestyle, nor does it mean you lack the capacity for decerning right and wrong. If, by association to the church, this is the new message he is espousing to the world, then it is clear to me by his lack of control to even show up sober to press the importance of his message, that the foundation upon where it rests is doomed to collapse. I was looking forward to a wonderful and eloquent debate between two well spoken individuals and learn something.... Sadly what I learned is that someone I looked towards with admiration has lost himself and may never return. Well spoken Stephen. It's a disservice to us all that your co-debater couldn't show up; it could've been great
I just rewatched this debate and even for a second time it baffles me how someone that I used to see as a well adjusted and well spoken guy even if I disagreed with a lot of his rhetoric, I respected how he presented himself. Any respect I had was gone. Stephen navigated this beautifully.
The true Christians are too busy either preaching or practicing. The grift was fun to watch while it lasted, he could of built something if he actually cared but let's be real he never did.
He’s obsessed with the INSTITUTION of the church that he claims Jesus established and it was presumed that Peter was appointed heir of apostolic succession who established the institutional church along with Paul. But that was based not on JESUS it had much more to do with the CULTURE at the time. I think if Jesus had it his way Mary Magdalene would’ve established the church (you should read her short gospel by the way it’s amazing and all about the inner light) but alas , there was no hope in such a patriarchal culture. Peter was quick to anger quick to judge , and he had the upper hand and resented the way Jesus loved Mary because she was a WOMAN. The canonical gospel was compiled in an extremely CULTURAL POLITICIZED manner. Mary suffered her cross.
For Milo being such a religious person he really is far more nihilistic about the world than Destiny is. Destiny goes on about how America needs to find some common ground outside of politics and unite under something that can make us feel american again, and Milo just goes off about how society is completely screwed and the government is a failure and instantly proves Destinys point about how all of these amazing things that we could all feel proud of are being used as political talking points rather than just appreciating the achievements.

You have to separate a person “practicing” a religion from the actual teachings of the doctrine itself. I’m sorry about your experiences and for me personally I’ve known a lot of "Christians” growing up and many of them were arrogant and filled with ego all the while using “god” as their shield from real accountability and real divinity. Yet, I must agree with the premise that the foundation of Christianity is what created a culture that we can, for the most part, be proud of in the USA. Most of the principles that we would consider common sense decency are not common and inborn, but are instead a continuation of those principles we were raised on. Also I get saying that nasty people aren’t real Christians is the ultimate cop out because ultimately it is people that are the vehicle by which this doctrine would be expressed, yet the doctrine is a standard. If people fail to commit in their own hearts to the objective standard of what it means to be something, then they bear no claim to that title. Bear no claim or at least shouldn’t be labeled as a good faith representative of said doctrine. Not to say that people must or will be perfect in living up to that standard, but most people pretend and delude themselves and then others use that as the example.

Milo really chose to start with "I believe in freedom until people start misbehaving according to my religion", holy shit the lack of self awareness in that argument.
Ironically you're the one that lacks self-awareness. Literally everyone supports having "freedom" to do things they like, and banning things they don't like. No one believes in freedom as a terminal value, not even libertarians (they believe in banning aggression), and *certainly* not the non-theistic religion called progressivism.

I genuinely do feel bad for Milo he seems so lost and broken. At the same time bc of what he’s gone through (and seems like he maybe hasn’t actually dealt with it at all) it has shaped him into believing what he believes. He doesn’t seem like someone who is able to stand the test of time. He seemed pretty out of it, granted this is the first time I’ve seen him so idk if this is how he always is.
Yeah he's coping hard, which is apparent with his demener. He is on something and I think it would do him a lot of good to break away from the internet and politics. Granted that doesn't change his shit stances.
Nah his life is a classic Hollywood story. So he spent years trying a bunch of things to get back into the spot light while doing drugs and spending money

i like how when hes talking about destiny's wife he pauses after he says something like the audience is suppose to start clapping and start an uproar
It's a disservice to us all that your co-debater couldn't show up; it could've been great
Fuckin well said man.
@@dontcallthemliberals3316 hard to build something on foundation made of myths and legends.
Nihilism is a common thread among devout. Many cite ‘if it weren’t for my faith …(basically I’d be nihilistic)

@@CaptainDarrick Sure it didn’t. Keep telling yourself that. All will be well. ;).
