MN Model MN86KS RC Crawler Upgrades and Mods

- In my latest video I take you through the first stage of mods and upgrades for this GREAT 1/12 truck - the NEW Crawler/ Trail Truck form MN Models - The MN86KS.
I also reveal the special livery for the body - a tribute to the success of Lewis Hamilton and the Mercedes F1 Team! If you want to know the decals I used then leave a comment.

Please note that I am having a problem with ebay links because the sellers keep changing or ending their listings which means the link suddenly stops working.
The 3 links below are for the tyres found by a subscriber, 'Hawkes Auto Gallery', that I mention in the video. They are similar dimensions to the tyres I used but have a tread pattern like the original kit tyres.

When I replaced friction dampers with these oil filled shocks (black set), I used 1/4" of plastic spacers inside shocks to limit travel. Also took off the spring perch/ring height adjuster so it wouldn't be as tall. That way it would be more scale looking & not as top heavy as well. I bought an MN86K when they came out & upgraded it to the KS with a separate kit. Anyway fixing to tear down the transfer case & tranny today after only 2 runs on it because of gear noise. Replaced all bearings beside what's inside transfer & trans. Hopefully I can either use a dry lube on plastic on plastic or even a lithium grease maybe. Any thought are welcome, thanks for your video's have watched several over the years.
Hi Craig. Thanks for sharing those tips 👍 Glad my vids have proved useful. Quite a few people complain of noisey transmission with the K spec, but I haven't had it myself. Sounds like you have done all the normal things other than buying all new parts.

Thanks Rob. The decals are a combo of cars decals I got off ebay. Most just peel and stick. Some I had to make. If you search 'mercedes amg', 'petronas', etc you should find them. Checkout the other videos on the '86 on my channel! 😎👍

You can get a little offset ends. That would fix the issue without removing material from the diff.

i just got MST KM Crawler 30x90mm exactly the same thread pattern as the stock tires, just taller, scale wise looks awesome. Been looking for a scale tire for the MN86ks, this is the only one i could find.

Any 25g servo fits straight in. Only Wpl c54 servo would fit this rig. Rest of them using 17g servos.

Can you maybe do a vid on how to fill the shocks with oil? Just open the top and fill the fluid wont that spill out of the opening where the center shaft is?
Not if the shocks are meant to be oil-filled. The ones in this video are meant to be. You just unscrew the top and fill, ensuring you remove any air bubbles. 👍
Beautiful! Are those decals? If so where did you get them? Also, the front flood lights. Love the tires, they seem to sold out. Any other similar recommendations? Love the channel

Thanks Chris. I got them off ebay. They are car vinyl decals for wing mirrors and brake calipers, etc. Should be able to find them if you search 'AMG', 'Mercedes', 'Petronas' decals on ebay. Some of them I had to modify by hand. There should be a link to the lights in the description, but again off ebay. If you search for 'rc car LED light' you should find them. Let me know if you have trouble. Shame if the tyres have sold out as they were the crawler tyre with the smallest diameter that fit 1.9" hubs. Make sure you sub!!!

This truck never really appealed to me as it always looked a bit school run meets footballers wives...........but youve totally changed my mind with some great looking upgrades and livery.....nice job.

Hi Javier. If you watch the unboxing video and review video I run you through all the differences. Its mainly that the KS has the extra body accessories and the full ball bearings👍

I'm having trouble finding parts for mine , had an issue with the battery over heated and melted the part where the battery goes in .Is there i sight where i can order it ?
Hi John. That's not good. I have looked and can't find any. Nothing on ebay either. The MN Models website is useless and they don't respond to emails. There is a UK seller on ebay who basically buys kits and sells the parts of individually so might be worth contacting him. His seller ID is 827sterling. Good luck 👍
Hi Mate. Love the build! Just to check, are the stock hex size 15mm? Looked online for the beadlock tires and have different sizes. Be great to know what’s the stock size are? Cheers!

@@SM-nn6po Cheers. Make sure your using a small cross-head screwdriver with the correct head. It's worth buying a set with the different types (pozidriv, etc) so you can find the one that fits best. They can often look similar but have subtle differences. 👍
Do you know what type of battery connector this has? Can’t seem to find a battery with the same connector.

@@RCModelsandMods yes the RTR. I found out that the connector type is called SM-3P
Glad you found the answer. That's the only thing with rtr batteries, they can have less common connectors to make you buy the manufacturers ones.

Nice vid....I just wonder one thing. Why did I not subbed yet👍🏻👍🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🏴🏴🏴 already upgraded servo to surpass 25g. Amazing metal geared one. Need servo saver. Tried links and most of them not working. Like those tyres. 90mm should be ok with lifted body👍🏻👍🏻

Hi! Good choice. There is a link to it in the description. Make sure you get the KS spec kit. The battery bay is roughly 8x4x2cm so should be easy to find one that fits. 😃👍

Hi. They are 3d printed light buckets and I just screwed them through the grill. They are cosmetic only.

Hi Demmy. This is the esc I am using. First one I have had but impressed so far. You will need the program card as well otherwise the drag brake (like engine braking) is too fierce.

Do you (or someone else you know) have the Traxxas Mercedes G500 version that you can compare the MN86KS to? Would love to see what things are different and what things are the same/similar. I've looked and looked, but I haven't seen anyone make a video about this yet.
Sadly not. And they are mega bucks. They might have the same body but that's where the similarity ends. The Traxxas is on another level. 👍

Hi. If you search Mercedes AMG and petronas on ebay you should find them. They are car wing mirror and brake caliper decals. I had to modify some of them.
