Thank you for the information on the leak with the skimmer. Had my pool for 35 yrs with several new liners during this time..However Thanks to COVID 😡 I had to wait literally a year to get a new liner....pool ran great for a few months then I noticed water level going down...so knew something was seriously wrong and all that water has to be going somewhere..but never saw any above ground. Long story short...water only goes down while pump is running. I left it off for a couple of days....water never lower than skimmer so that told me it had to be skimmer trouble. 😱 So thanks for all the info...soon as it gets daylight ..gonna turn the pump off to keep from losing all that water. Time to play whacka molee again. 🙏 It doesn't cost as much as a new liner...thanks again guys 😘
If you are certain there is a leak but your service tech can’t find it the problem is likely where the structure MEETS the plumbing… the joint where the skimmer box meets the pool! I literally had a slow leak for 10 years and five different leak companies failed to find it - another three claimed there was no leak at all even though I was adding water every 3 days year round. (They all did the bucket test). Several of them wanted to dig up my whole yard and rip up the pool deck to find it. When it came time to resurface the marcite the pool builder knew exactly where the leak was just based on what I told him. Apparently it’s well known to them that the deck settling pulls the skimmer box from the pool itself. There was no visible crack but regrouting the joint completely and permanently stopped the leak My only conclusion is that every “leak detection expert” in my area is either a fraud or incompetent. It’s usually beyond the homeowner’s expertise to find a invisible leak and repair it but focusing on that skimmer box joint is a good bet. I learned more from that pool builder than any repair tech or leak guy.
This is a great post. I’m going to share this with my customers because it’s clear, concise and most importantly accurate. Thanks Steve!
Please do!

Please show us a video of the bucket water matching the pool water.
Smart idea!

I lose water when my driving board water fountain is running. But if it’s off nothing happens. What’s that mean
Sounds like a leak in your water fountain line
My husband says the level goes down because of the overfill drain. The water goes to the bottom of the skimmer
i suppose that both the bucket and the pool must both have no solar blanket on it.
Yes that is correct. For this test it's worth it to skip on one night of covering the pool
