I have a question! I used to have a mouse that I adopted from a rodent rescue, and I absolutely adored him. I would love to get another mouse/mice someday but I’m hesitant about purchasing them from a pet store, so I’ve been looking into mice breeders in my area. Is buying mice from a breeder generally a responsible idea? I ask only because I would not ever buy a dog/cat from a breeder since there are so many in shelters who need homes, but it seems to be different for mice (there are barely any in rescues, at least in my area.) I understand it might also depend on if the specific breeder has good practices. Thank you and cheers from Pittsburgh!! I love your channel! :-)
A good mouse breeder is the better option because you are much more likely to get a healthy and friendly mouse. Also you will be giving your money to someone who takes good care of mice. Getting a pet store mouse means you rescue a mouse, either from becoming live reptile food or from going to an ignorant owner, which will mean everything to that one mouse. The disadvantage is that pet store mice tend to be poorly bred and kept, so are more likely to have health and temperament issues, mainly flightiness. Also you are giving your money to mouse breeders who breed mice in very poor conditions and with little care. If you can find a good breeder, go this route, it is the best. Second best is to get a mouse who was the result of an accidental litter in a pet mouse home. You can look for advertisements or advertise yourself that you are looking for a pet mouse. Last choice would be the pet store, although for most of us this is the only choice. You will be rescuing a mouse if you get it from a pet store.....
Recently I had a litter of 4 mice, their now about 3 and a half weeks old and their all growing pretty well physically and mentally but one of them hasn’t gained nearly as much weight as the others and it’s still really little but it has grown just as much mentally as the others exploring the cage and learning to eat the food. Any help with what’s going on would much appreciated.
Make sure you separate the boys from the girls when they are 4-5 weeks old. The last thing you want is things to get our of control. Nothing ruins mouse keeping more than WAY too many mice. Sometimes you do get a little runt. Usually they catch up in size but sometimes they remain small. If it is very tiny then you have a little peanut, the term mouse breeders give to extra small runts :)
ive never thought of putting sticks in cages for them to climb! ive given them willow stick chews, though. what kind of larger stick would be best for that and safe for them to chew on?

Help me! I need advice on what to do, I have maybe 13 female mice. And 8 9 male mice separated from the females, I separated the male mice a month after they were born and today I came in to not 1 but 2 of my female mice giving birth to a total of 15 babies. I ended up with the females and males from my brother whom was going to throw them in a woodstove and kill them . I dont know what to do, I am overwhelmed. Any advice on what I can do? Killing them is not in my nature. Thanks!
This is the danger of keeping mice, you can end up with way too many, way too quickly. At this stage the kindest thing would be to have the excess humanely euthanized by a vet or a friend you trust, but if this is just not possible you could try giving them to a rescue or a pet store. Rescues are hard to find for mice, but it is worth a try. Pet stores are usually happy to take your mice, but most will end up as live snake food. But at this stage you have little choice, if you keep them all, they and you will end up just suffering since you will not be able to care for them properly. And if you do not separate out any male over 4 weeks old before the next litter is born, you will have even more babies.
Thank you for your reply!. I am not as good as sexing the babys as I thought ☹. I thought taking them would give them a better chance in life, it would cost so much to spay them right now and idk anywhere who would
I thought about putting some of the babies in a freezer to freeze them but I just dont have the heart, sadly I believe over half of the 14 females I have in a huge huge tank I think got pregnant. Theres already 14 babies. So I have no clue what I am going to do, I have a few people interested in them for pets, but unsure.
Generally I'm against breeding, I don't know what your practices are since mice have short lifespans. I'm hoping that you keep most of them or make sure they go to good homes where they're not used to breed irresponsively.
I have carefully thought about all the ethical issues and only breed as many that I can keep myself and take good care of. If you keep mice (or any pet) there are a ton of ethical issues, whether you get them from the pet store, a responsible breeder or breed your own. Extreme animal rights people want the breeding of all domesticated animal to stop, essentially leading to their extinction so there is no chance of abuse and suffering anymore. They forget that the world is many shades of grey, not just black and white. If done right, companion animals can have the best of lives. It would be a very bland, sad and lonely world for us humans if we could not have a connection to a companion animal. Someone has to breed domesticated animals, and if it is done right, then it can be good for everyone involved. My mice love their little lives :)
@@CreekValleyCritters I agree with you, from the way you handle your animals, the space you have any the lifespan of the animal it makes sense I'm really glad to hear you keep them all. I've bred one of my Guinea pigs once before for similar reasons, mainly for her to have a companion that would not reject her. There definitely needs to be more management with breeding and higher standards of animal care with those who want to become owners having to go through some training or taking proper time to reflect on if they can provide a good home. It would be nice to see breeding done more responsibly across the world especially for longer lived animals that have a huge responsibility to cover. It's a complicated ethnic issue that won't change until the irresponsible, ignorant and money grabbing people are removed from the animal industry or educated to a point where the animals are in safe hands. I'm glad that there's at least one person who is able to spread that message, your mice all look very happy so I feel both relief and enjoyment watching these videos. Especially Midas who is probably my favourite as the first video I found was of that little orphan mouse who he played such a great daddy to. Bless their little soul.
I feel uncomfortable giving my money to people who take poor care of mice, plus my own mice are so much better. They never suffered any trauma or poor conditions so are much friendlier and healthier.

Bless their little soul.
why isnt rescuing poor slave feeder mice enough?
I feel uncomfortable giving my money to people who take poor care of mice, plus my own mice are so much better. They never suffered any trauma or poor conditions so are much friendlier and healthier.
First!
