  • The AR 15 Trigger might seem complicated, but it is actually a beautifully simple mechanism.
First, the Safety Selector prevents the Trigger from raising far enough to release the hammer.
With the Safety selector set to the fire position, the trigger can move into the cut-out on the inside portion of the Safety.
The Trigger Sear and the Hammer surfaces are engaged. The Firearm is now waiting for you to pull the Trigger.
Once you pull the trigger, these surfaces disengage, allowing the Hammer to rotate forward.
Spring pressure drive the Hammer forward, firing a round.
Gas pressure drives the Bolt Carrier Group rearward, this pushes the hammer back.
The hammer latches onto the Disconnector. This prevents the Hammer from rotating forward, while you hold the trigger to the rear.
As you release the Trigger, the front of the Disconnector is pushed up. This disengages the Hammer and disconnector.
Just prior to disconnecting, the Trigger Sear is in position to catch the notch in the Hammer, preventing it from rotating forward until you pull the Trigger again.
Please don't steal this animation. It took a long time to put together. If you would like to use it for any reason, please send my a PM and we will work something out.

The best animation/description of how the single-stage AR trigger works. It helps identify the problem of disconnector on my AR trigger. Thank you for sharing this.

Thank you!! This makes you appreciate the genius of those that designed these mechanisms! Great job making a complex event look simple!

I liked the narration explaining the steps and functions. So many of these animations have no explanation. Very helpful.

Thank you for this outstanding and simple explanation. There are many videos on youtube on this subject but they fail to make any sense. This one is just perfect.

Very nicely presented, thank you for uploading. Studying various trigger groups right now and this was extremely helpful.

thank you for sharing this! It really helped me understand the process. What is truly amazing to me, is how EXTREMELY fast, all the "things" happen. from the time we press the trigger, to the moment the bullet is speeding through the barrel, a LOT has transpired. The 1st action, and each subsequent reaction. so QUICK!!!

The click you hear when shooting is the disconnect releasing and sear re engaging as the trigger is released. It makes an obvious audible click.
