How to catch gar in the cold weather, alligator gar fishing tips

In this fishing video I went out to the river to fish for alligator gar in the late fall. The water and air temp was still cold for the gar to be biting since they like hot days and warm water. But with a little patience and a bit of luck i was able to catch a nice sized alligator gar.

Very sleepy, I had a float on so I could see if the bait got picked up and even when the float went down he never pulled drag. So I opened the bail to give less resistance

I use Penn Fierce 8,000 and Penn Spinfisher 8500 size reels. I recommend 100-150lb braid to help with snag resistance, which is also why I use the large reels. I've reeled them in on 50lb line but also had them snap 100lb line like it was 10lb.

For the price it's a decent reel. If you are chasing big gar like these I do not recommend it because the body is not metal and flexes pretty bad. I generally say if you are targeting 50lb or less it's a good reel for the job

I have a 5000 and it has a metal body
