I owned this vehicle for about a year and where the 1992 model gets to 23 years old and various components need to be replaced, etc., the cost of ownership of this car was too much for me. For the time though, it sure was frightening to reach speeds of 140mph when I had the nerve to do so; the car is just a monster and luxury without equal.
+Richard Bryan Yeah, it pretty expensive to maintenance this car. But S class was always above your average Mercedes. It depends on condition of the car. If you put together Audi A8 D2, BMW E38 and W140 is far more cheaper in long term than this two.
+Richard Bryan : MY dad dream was to find a very pretty clean W140 S320 and he has one with 91 KM. I am saving now and I can get a new Mercedes if I want but I want W140 (no Mechanics work in S600 specially in my country and if I find... they will suck my wallet) I decided to go with S500 [M119 engine] I will buy the cleanest one I can afford. It is true that this model is last true and over engineered Mercedes. I don't think I will buy another Benz 2000's or 2010's Benz generation after this beauty. I wasn't amazed when I opened the W221 door and looked inside :( and I am sure the driving feelings and how the car sound and drive will be not like the old Benz .

true ... but it won't be solid & reliable as the W140 is :) . I believe the power and the handling is better in W221 but W140 has all the engineering aspects of Mercedes Benz. When it comes serious accidents and Maintenance I believe the W140 will win. But let suspose one day I decide to buy a new benz [like missing the old days] Of course I would think of W221 since it is very close to W140 somehow. I wrote earlier comment 9 months and now I have very sweet & clean 1993 W140 300 SE. Unforentally I couldn't find a clean S500 but still i will find one someday. I am thinking to add the BMW e39 530i next to the Benz. Mercedes-Benz W140 & BMW E39 are the Best cars are ever made :) .

What are you talking about, they are not fail. I have before W140 500 SEL from 92 and it was one of the best cars I ever had. Now I drive W220. W140 is far better than BMW E38 in terms parts price. It's more comfortable than any BMW it's date.

[regarding the 91-93 model years] These comments are entertaining... But you have to remember, most people that say "oh its un-affordable to maintain" are the same kind of people that cant change a tire.. I've found the *W140* Benz, is actually engineered with the mechanic in mind! Almost everything I've replaced, adjusted, or repaired has been easier to get to, and more economical than cheap American vehicles. So if you *can't* spin a wrench, you better have deep pockets for the Mercedes dealer.. If you *can* spin a wrench, you'll love how easy this car is to work on compared to a Chrysler or Ford.. And if your a chevy guy, you might be amazed that your not soaked head to toe with oil after coming out from under the *W140*. (; (yes its very affordable *EXCLUDING* the V12 model... that requires double the effort and quadruple the money)

In ears, I mean it sounds like the music is about 70% as loud as the person speaking. So its a bit stressful to try to listen to him and sort out the words. Id prefer just a gentle volume of music lets say 20-30% of the voice. The parts where there is no speach, you can raise the volume to what it is now.
bingoberra18 Honest when I edit music is 70% to 30% in favorite to speaking (70%) and 30% of music. I checked on headphones 500$ (a good one) and it is good. I also edit on stereo worth couple of thousand dollars. I am gonna try next time and you see for youself alright? is is better

i had a 94 s420, everything that could leak, leaked. it literally leaked every fluid, the transmission was slipping in every gear, the engine had a loud ticking noise, it was horrible, it was a NIGHTMARE.
i do say though they are VERY nice cars, but only with low mileage and maintained.
You are bought the wrong car, besides the 4.2 engine is not as good as the 5.0, I don't have any problem with my92. I use to drove every 6months to dealer for regular maintance. Now with the W220 '03 S600 I own know is more trouble, too much electronics. And a lot of expensive repairs. Go for dealer, check it out. W140 are quite reliable. I've done myself 220 000km with mine. I sold it out with 423 000 km total. It was still in nice condition. If you are talking about nightmare buy a Lotus Omega

I won't mind taking a W/V 140 retrofitting it with a ultra modern Euro-6 V8 charged-cooled diesel engine 4-litre class & up...overall power & torque performance especially i'll say gives a far better deal in terms of cost:benefit & fuel efficiency..even refinement levels cannot be inferior over the old relatively inefficient petrol V12 ?!?
The successor series 220 to my mind represents an overall inferior compromise to the 140. German car have to maintain the standard as a German car, not try to feel like some Japanese car, which unfortunately the 220 seem to veer toward.
Overall, even now in year 2015, in many ways i'll still prefer a 140 over a 221, 222 only that in the engine & suspension departments, give the 140 an update !
I believe there's a German vehicle builder who puts modern engines into the old Pagodas..perhaps they can also do an updated 140 for sale as 'new' car..that would be great for those who don't quite like the looks of the current new models yet wanting to blend the leading-edge mechanical technologies of nowadays with their preferred looks from the past designs like the 140.
Good point. I used to own both of this cars - W140 and W220 bought one after another. And I can say that both cars are relatively good, but I prefer W220 mechanical, interior space, handling, but W140 ride, simplicity and the way it drives - it feels so bulletproof. But I used to have mileage in W140 on the same level as the W220, and W220 was a over 170 bhp more than M119 W140 and has 4 cylinders more. W140 has simpler layout and mechanical advancement, so its quite robust, W220 on the other hand have pretty expensive ABC suspension to fix in my case. But when replaced it was reliable.
jaymum23 First part of your comment is definitely true, and I can't agree with your more. But rather W240 is far better than W221 and W222 in comfort. I drive many times W221 and it is better at almost any area than W220 I used to own but the handling in W220 is better. As far as W222 go I drove couple days earlier and its not more comfortable than W240. At 170-200 km/h the interior noise is much greater in W222. Yes W240 is based on W140 because car was very comfortable at it was more like chauffeur car than W220. They try make W220 more drivable as possible and part of that they success that. W222 is now good alternative to Rolls Royce in terms what you can get for your money, but the MB never jump over the Rolls Royce brand and customers usually buy this sort of cars, even that is 85% BMW overall, they have something in their unique style of driving. I doubt that new Maybach or Pullman can beat RR. As I mention I drive Bentley Arnage old one with 4.4 liter BMW, and it was better in many ways than W220. Both presented in 1998. I never drove RR silver Seraph but it is more comfortable and has softer suspension than a Bentley.

It's hard to compare W140 and W222.
It's even noticeable difference between W221 and W222. But for a car that is 24 years of difference and 3 generations behind W140 is a great buy. And I sure can recommend it. Just don't buy the less powerful versions, the 500SEL and 600SEL is variants to go for, the all 6 cylinders are underpower.

Was ADS suspension a hydropneumatic system like on some Citroën ?
xatigrou As far as I know this is a suspension with a control hardness. Back suspension is an integrated system ADS + NIVO. There are no common usual shock absorber but cylinders + "sphere" cushioning. The 'spheres' are those ''pears'' cushioning on the back of which sit near the shock absorbers. When your W140 have ADS it is display on the dash with damper sign on the button. When light is on - the system is active, and suspension get hardened, when off the W140 get you pleasant soft ride. They usually stand for about 10-12 years when new. I had 500SEL from MY 92 and I don't have ADS. The rule is that more powerfull version have ADS, but not everytime. 600SEL is more common with these. But I saw S320 with this. There are two ADS sepearate systems in W140 - one from 1991-1994 and above 1994-1998. The parts are more common for system II from 1994-1998. Overall, the W140 ADS is much less complicated than the R129. In Citroëns it is very popular, and my colleague who have old BX he recharged with nitrogen valve, to future top-ups. So answer your question yes its pretty same system. Beside if the front is soft and the rear is hard this means that there is time to replace the spheres cushioning. In W140 with ADS these shock absorbers with springs that are actuators for adjusting the height of the rear suspension. They only lift the car. Shock is these ''pears''.
ADS can be fully "fly" flash code reader on pin 11 of the diagnostic connector and find out what is wrong if something is wrong anyway.
