Born in Midwest America and was a teen in the early 90’s. I wanted (and definitely still want) one of these. My friends mom had a 300e and another friend had a 190e given to him when he turned 16. The 190 was all black with some dished out chrome Lorinsers. Full gangster spec.

My daily is a Black 2001 W210 E430 that I found in excellent condition last year and I did similar mods such as blacking out the grill and all the chrome and tinting the windows then adding lowered sport-touring springs with a new set of wheels and tires for the ‘gangster Merc’ look. I did a mild cat-back exhaust and a cold air kit for a little more intake and exhaust noise when I want it but it still flies well under the radar and could cruise at 90 all day long without raising an eyebrow. Not a ‘fast’ car by any means (I have an W211 E55 for that) but it’s comfortable and powerful enough (about the same 290 hp as the E500) to keep up with highway traffic without breaking a sweat. The pleasant ‘German car smell’ of the leather and the gleam of the polished wood trim make it feel very inviting inside and the ‘click’ of the switches is very nostalgically satisfying. It’s quiet and amazingly rattle free for its age and is just old enough to feel like you are driving something special. A late night ice cream run for the missus takes me on a cloak and dagger mission where I imagine I’m a secret agent saving the world from tyranny. Not really, but it does make the trip way more interesting than the wife’s Honda Civic! 😂 Beautiful Mercedes!

It might be. Unfortunately you cant tell on camera. Specially with polarized lens. Also it seems like it was mostly cosmetic restoration. I've not heard about any work with engine and specially gearbox that needs to be redone after all this years.
No waaaaay. What a legendary car. We owned a 4.2 swapped 5.0 engine. One of the smoothest rides i’ve ever had, and one of the best cars ever manufactured.
My wife and I drive around in a W124 320E. Not a 500 but we love driving that car. Bone stock and still pretty clean. Best ride of our little fleet even with over 200k miles
@@bandobando1558 it is one of the cushiest rides I drive, but not so much that it feels like you are sailing on waves. Still tight steering, but you don't feel the bumps. I haven't tried a Lexus from that same time frame, but compared to modern luxury cars, I like the ride better in the 320E
@@BenjaminKing1 I had an ex-german military e200d, it holds with newer S class models in terms of ride quality. 400k km and still going without anything major to repair. The car has been in the family for 23yrs now, and we dont plan on selling it ever.
FYI - The headrest button only works when the rear headrests are upright. If you press that button it activates a pneumatic system and the upright headrests in the rear will go down. To lift the rear headrest it has to be manually lifted by the passenger, which is pretty easy. The original brand of radio came in 2 flavors depending on what you chose. It was either a Blaupunkt or a Becker radio system (At least if you got a Euro version).
I've owned both a W124 (1992) 500E and a W124 (1993) 400E. While there were differences in the way they "drove and handled," performance wise, the 400E seemed just as quick. Some people have called the W124 "the best car in the world," and perhaps it came close to that when they were new. Despite the passage of some decades, your car looks very cool, very lethal, and very fun! Congratulations and I hope you are planning on keeping it for a very long time.
The car brings back some sweet memories of my blue-black W124 AMG 3.4 4V. One of the smoothest and purest luxury sports rides of the day back then. I had one of only 100 on the road in Japan back in the day.
I've recently rediscovered my love for this model, I almost completely forgot about it since it became rare on roads nowadays. But luckily there are people keeping this machines alive, and we should be thankful to them for preserving a piece of car history
My parents owned a silver 1987 W124 300E back in the day and I was soooooo upset with them that they did not consider buying the 190 mph W124 AMG Hammer; maybe it was the $181,000 sticker price at the time Lol. The AMG Hammer had a higher top speed than the Ferrari Testarossa (180 mph) back them!! I enjoyed driving that W124 to my Junior and Senior proms like a big Boss!! I believe I took it up to about 110/120 mph and it still had room on the speedo. The [rear] headrest button is used to retract the rear headrests when they are in the 'Up' position. Once you depress the button the headrests would retract/flop back and make a thud noise. The original audio system was 'Becker' and my dad upgraded it to the green light Alpine 7284 at one point. You brought back so many memories. Thanks for sharing!!
That car was restricted by means of a gentleman's agreement between Mercedes and BMW. The only way to change it was changing the gear ratio restricted to 166mph, I believe
@pinarellorider9023 Why would I need to check when I work at Mercedes? LOL, don't you love how some narcissist's respond when hit with information they knew nothing about.
It was "BlauPunkt". It has a Blue Dot in front of the name which is the definition of "Blaupunkt". It means Blue Point or Blue Dot. I remember sitting in a few of them when I was younger with the "Blaupunkt" stereo system and actually getting to drive a 1995-ish V12 S600 W140 back in the early 2000's... which is one of my Favorite because that car rode So Smooth!!!!
Now that is a cool classic, the birth of the super sedan/saloon. I have such a week spot for factory luxury sport sedan cars with super car performance. If you know, you know but probably over 95 percent would take it for a normal Mercedes’ w124, that is what makes it so cool. Please do more reviews from this segment if possible, thanks Sam.
I currently own the 1992 300E in satin matte black lowered on 20’s and dark tints and it has been and remains to be my favourite car regardless. Currently replacing the water pump which I must say is quite a challenge compared to others I’ve changed but I love the adventure of fixing it.
The Most perfect Sedan to ever exist. The budget alone was enormous. The car that brought the gentleman’s agreement and prompted BmW and Audi to the horsepower war
What a jewel of a car. A time capsule. Blaupunkt was the radio or possibly a Becker but I think Blaupunkt. No mention of the engine or it’s collaboration? Or did the swap out the original engine?
