  • Mercedes-Benz invested a billion dollars to make the W140 S-Class one of the most overengineered sedans of all time... but she can't stand the sight of his Brilliant Silver 400 SEL. What's her deal, and can he win her over?

    These are exceptionally great cars. My parents bought a last year of production 1999 smoke silver S 500 in August of 1998 and 20 years later they were going to trade it in for another S Class. I said "Wait a minute! Don't trade it in, let me buy it." $9100 is what I paid, a whopping 90% less than what they originally paid 20 years earlier! Not only is there sentimental value here, since it's part of the family, it's also so much fun to see how it still fascinates literally everybody that I show it to. People are shocked with the level of luxury, creature comforts and amenities that don't exist on the majority of new vehicles on the road today! (You can imagine how much my family and I would geek out when we first had this car when it was new. I mean in 98 when you saw a vehicle driving towards you at night with bright white xenon headlamps, you knew it was going to be an S Class, 7 series, or some other kind of high-end vehicle. The 1 touch windows with pinch protection. If I had a dollar for every time I stuck my arm out the window to demonstrate how it stops and goes back down...LOL Oh and the door and trunk closing assist and the "stay clean" handle is as impressive today as it was 22 years ago. When I was a sophomore in high school learning how to drive in this car, it was so satisfying (and elitist I know..) realizing this was the only car on the road with rain sensor wipers, stability control, side airbags, and so on. The W140 is a legendary machine, one that has stood the test of time and continues to impress with it's thick glass, gleaming chrome, super plush carpet, gathered leather door trim inserts, etc. It's an engineering masterpiece that is aging as gracefully as it traverses undulating city streets or hustles down country back roads at triple digit speeds. It breaks my heart to say we may never experience a vehicle quite like this in our future. One that stirs the soul and creates such an immense sense of well-being. God bless the Mercedes-Benz 140 series

    When I was a kid in the 90’s my friends dad had a new 1994 S420, we used to get home from school and go straight to the garage to sit in it and just enjoy the quality and substance that it was. It sat in the garage 98% of its life until my friends sister inherited it as a first car and totaled it soon thereafter.. Sad day. This car helped ignite my passion for quality automobiles.. • @4MATICbenz
      @4MATICbenz Год назад

      Yup - the early 2000s LS430 was the most blatant aping of the W140's design, but I'd also argue that I see W140 influence in the design of a lot of late 90s/early 2000s full size sedans from Acura, Infiniti, Cadillac, and even Bangle's E65 7-series and VW's first generation Phaeton. The W140, as well as the concurrent W210 E-class, receive a lot of mixed feelings on their designs, but one thing for certain is that they both inspired a lot of copycat designs in the early 2000s.

  • @sultanqasim

    Great video, and reminds me of how I and my friend perceive my W140 differently. She used to think of it as an ugly old car, though she appreciated its silence and smoothness, and later discovered it’s nicer to drive than she expected. I also used to think of the W140 as ugly, though over time I came to appreciate its utilitarian brutalist styling, and that led me to buying one a few years ago. It has been an expensive car to maintain due to its complexity (compared to the much simpler W126), but it does feel like a massive leap of engineering over the W126. I named my S500 as “Dictator II”, the successor to my W126 that my friends had nicknamed “The Dictator”.
    I love the silence and solidity and engineering of these cars. I’m an engineer myself so I appreciate such things. It handles awful potholed roads better than any modern luxury cars thanks to its fat tires, high suspension travel, and soft spring rates, only beaten by the even more third world dictator rough road friendly W126. Thanks to its double wishbone front and multi link rear suspension geometry, it can also muster impressive grip levels in cornering and is unfazed by mid corner bumps. It’s very far from a sports car, with its heft, soft suspension, and very light steering, but the chassis is unexpectedly competent at hanging onto the road in spite of the body roll. I do miss the much more tactile steering feel of the W126 though.

    • @BasemWasef
      @BasemWasef  2 года назад +2

      Thank you, and yes, the 126 had an amazing way of soaking up bumps, but couldn't compare to the advances of the 140. I was accused of using an "engineer's" attitude about the 140, but maybe that's the difference sometimes- right brain vs left brain. It might not win any beauty contests, but it sure is a fascinating car.

      She is a MORON. The W 140 never bothered to enter any "beauty contests". It is a car fit for not just a king, but an EMPEROR. Too bad that at 30 years old or more, it is now obsolete for me as a daily driver. I will definitely get me an S class soon, most likely the 2007-13 S65AMG other monumental and tremendous performance S class, or an even newer one, 2014-, esp when used car prices go back down to reality.

    Have had my 400SEL since 2013. The previous owner spent a fortune on it. I have spent a small fortune on it. Fortunately have a mechanic whom was trained on engineering the W140's to fix it and do repairs without being completely exploited. In saying that its now in the best mechanical condition I have ever experienced. On the M1 highway it cruises like sitting in 1st Class on a Boeing air-jet and is moderate on fuel consumption. Before it use to drink like a camel. Drive it only on Sundays for 2hrs. Everything works on it now. Its unique, masterly engineered and superior in comfort and way more affordable than its really worth on the market. The equivalent in todays market I'd need 200k to spend or more for anything similar. Its priced on the market today 24k. So in a sense its the most advanced cheapest luxury vehicle today. Nothing else is comparable in my opinion. 0-90 klm is really an experience. Like a Top Gun take off. 90-180klm it monsters and you feel like the car is sitting on 110klm in a leather sofa. The vehicle is underestimated and a beast on the road.

    One of the best reviews I've seen keep it up! My father had a 92 500SEL for most of my childhood, I'd like to think that it influenced my engineering interest in some way or another. Funny enough my dad bought it for my mom but she thought it's too bulky so he ended up buying her a W210 and keeping the W140 for himself. Fast forwards a couple decades, I had the chance to own a 2011 S550 and a 95 S600 coupe which only clarified the reason the W140 gets so much attention. I spent more time than I would like to admit going back and forth with some details on each. The quality of material and the fit and finish were just on a whole different level. Basically everything that could be experienced in person but couldn't be written in the spec sheet was just better.

    My wife is quite the opposite! I had a 500SEL along with SL500 & C32 AMG when we met 10 years ago which I had to sell because we had a kids and they were not efficient or reliable as they were worn down. I purchased all three again years later cleaner and last year models well maintained examples not as daily cars though. My wife doesn't care much for the SL or the AMG but S500 its like her other child, she's constantly bugging me to clean it go wash it and take it out on our date nights! She loves it and when we retire she wants to travel the country in it!

      Touring the country in an S500 sounds like perfection; I'm hoping to do so someday in my 1994 S600 Coupe.

    I love my W140 500SEL, after 30 years in the streets still ride and looking good it's the best car of the world and I don't need other car. Fuck tesla, rolls royce, land rover, mustang and camaro, W140 it's the god of the road. Greetings from Ecuador.

    I have been driving my 1999 5 speed S320 for 7 years as my 'daily' and recently began looking at a 2011 W221 twin turbo. I can't justify it. The W140 is all any man could ever really ever need. 1997+ models took all of the bugs out. sigh....women. She will love you more for your ability to look beyond the 'skin-deep' factor in another 10 years.

    Growing up in Syria this car meant one thing.. politicians and officials, usually corrupt ones. For that I never liked this car. Watching your video I was surprised how well en gineered this car actually is. Moving forward I will judge this car for what it actually is, not based on who used to drive in it.

    It’s a masculine car. I can understand why women may not find it appealing. I love big, imposing cars and this was it for me. I own a 1996 S420, a 1999 S500 and a 1998 S500 stretch limo. I just love the quality, fit and finish of these cars.

    When I drive my W140, I know that 9/10 cars that drive by cost more than mine. However what overpowers that is that 9/10 cars I drive by are less important than mine. That's what keeps that grin on my face while I slowly roll around a corner, hearing the gravel crackle under my Monoblocks.

    I have a 96' S500 with over 230k miles. I have other MB's I can drive, but there is just nothing like driving the vault that is a W140. Like you, I sourced the Grand Edition's beautiful 18" Monoblock Aero II's. Also like you, my wheel bolts stuck out from the face of the Mono's like spikes on a German trucker. Not a proper look. So, here is the fix, I recommend ordering from Phil @ www.OtisincLA.com. Call him and get 20 of these bolts. Dacromet coated ball seat, German made, 14 x 1.5 x 45 (diameter x thread x shank) #20-4302-B. The bolts should not extend beyond the wheel face and these high quality bolts will fix that for you. You can thank me later...

    God bless wives lol. I recently bought a used 2015 A5 and when we looked at it my wife was so enthusiastic about it. “It’s so nice, great car etc..” she said. So after purchasing it she never wants to drive it or take it out, rather go out in her Mazda SUV 🤷🏽. I asked her “I thought you liked it?” She said “it’s nice for you but I don’t really like it, it’s too masculine.”

    She was wrong about no one taking design cues from that car. Lexus
    Did with the introduction of the LS430, Acura did with the salad sides RL that cam out like in 97, Chrysler did with the 300, BMW did with the 7 series after the 2002 version. And if she watches this video hopefully she realizes how quiet the car is, no wind noise, no tire noise, no road noise, and y’all are both not being jolted around and shaken about over bumps etc. A properly maintained w140 and it’s like being wafted around on a magic carpet with leather seats.

    The lovely Anna is right. It's officious, brutalist and in no way sexy. But the engineering was a statement of hegemony. And if you needed to crush the continent in comfort before, during or after a coup d'etat, whichever side you might be on, this is your car.
