I am from the west coast part of Sweden where we do not have a tradition of eating surströmming but i was dating a girl from the north and they do that once a year... not sure why. One day her father told me they were happy for the lobster i brought and they would treat me with a local delicacy and dinner was in a couple of hours. We went down to the lake relaxing and she was smiling constantly and i could not really figure out why. Once back at the house there was maybe 10 people gathered in the garden and we sat down her father came out of the house with a can and opened it in a bucket of water... the smell! i thought i was going to die and they prepared a sort of sandwich where you have thin white bread with sour cream, chives, boiled fresh potatos (mashed) and some other stuff. I took the first bite and it was really good there was no bad taste and the smell was ok but on the second bite i hit the fish and i just got up turned around and puked all over the roses and some silly angel ornaments. Everyone was laughing and i had the worst smell in my mouth. Later that night we went to a party and i was not feeling very well from the previous experience plus i made small surströmmings smelling burps about once a minute. never again!

Surströmming is very delicious if you eat the fish in the right way, eat with onoin, almond potato, and with souer creame. Here in Sweden, at least I do wash the fish with water before eat. I wont recommend it! The taste is just salty so if u have potatos and stuff its just to get som saltiness? The smell is really bad like rotten fish but like i said when u mix it up with other things its really good! My problem is how they can eat larvs n other crazy shit in like india or something :p
