    I just tried it and it helped reduce the breathiness especially on the 'i' vowel sound. Thank you!

    I have been training this for hours daily since first commenting and this really is so important. My resonance has never been this good and pairing this video with Karen's videos on vocal placement helped me a lot.

    My dear to me discovering this has been a miracle. A time when I had hated my voice and didn't enjoy to sing anymore. The moment I tried the pencil trick I sounded really beautiful. Now I love my voice n i enjoy singing

    yeah this is one I have to keep in mind a lot. I tend to grab a bit and get "stuck" and end up a bit too heavy "down in the throat" so I have to keep in mind to get the resonance up a bit higher when I start going into mixed voice or even on a good strong belt. Its also pretty crucial when adding rasp/grit/distortion because you DONT want to be adding grit etc down below the pencil line

    Thank you Karyn! Great exercise, excellent demo. I had heard about using a pencil before but didn't go beyond that!
    Shall be getting my own personal "vocal pencil" just for this. My kids would appreciate keeping the rest separate!
    Cheers,
    Lin😌

    Being a New Yorker, I have to constantly remind myself to keep the voice from falling down into the throat during speaking too. Even if I go too far and get a Paul Lynde type of twangy sound, I'd rather be favoring that speaking production, than talking on the folds and residing in the throat.

      singwisevocals dear Karyn, I would kindly like to ask you if you could give me some lights about the way how the movements of the hands and the vocal mechanism are connected. I am making my Masters research about this topic and so far I cannot find a clear answer even though there is an evident correlation and this is a pedagogical tool that has been used for centuries in the voice teaching.
      Thank you for any help!

    In a lesson with Salvatore Fisichella a while back, he stops playing the piano and walks out of the room. I hear him scrounging around in the other room and am thinking WTF. He comes back in with Rigatoni (uncooked) and shoves it in my mouth and tells me to bite on it and stop opening the mouth so wide.
    Great minds! :-)

    I just watch Dan´s episode with Melissa Cross. Cool of you to chime in on the comments with this technique. You guys are a tight knit group, for sure! I will be working with it to improve resonance as I sing a lot of ´´high altitude´´ tenor rep and sometimes have trouble landing on top of the note with a good ringout. Thanks!

    Very cool, friend! Are you actively changing the vowel, or is it passively modifying? Such a great exercise for contemporary sounds! (yay for mentioning Melissa Cross!)

    • @singwisevocals
      @singwisevocals  6 лет назад +2

      If you listen to the first demonstration in which I alternate between the 'under' and 'over' sounds, I'm singing an UH (schwa) for both. It sounds like the same vowel, just different in quality or tone. In the second alternating demonstration, the vowel does seem to change a bit, but I was actually just pushing from my throat on the 'under' version, and that was reshaping the vocal tract (lengthening it a bit), which created a slightly (and passively) modified vowel. Thanks for your comment, friend!

    It seems to be very similar to your "How to improve vocal resonance lessons 1 & 2". What I am confused with is on how to apply this during actual singing? I would appreciate if you could elaborate on this.

    • @singwisevocals
      @singwisevocals  6 лет назад +1

      Sure. If you watch the Renee Fleming masterclass, you'll see how she helps the singer apply this to the aria that she's singing. I'll be posting a video later today on my Patreon page in which I show me working with a student on this technique and he applies it to an audition song. Maybe I'll post a second video here that shows the application.

    Love this video...Karyn.... how can I sing in perfect pitch without an instrument???

    • @singwisevocals
      @singwisevocals  6 лет назад +2

      Uggh. I didn't see your question until now. Developing pitch accuracy is a matter of having the technique in place to be able to adjust the vocal instrument for pitch and also being able to audiate - to hear the pitches and melody accurately inside your head before singing them. All of this comes with time and practice and increased exposure to music.

    It’s better if you put the tip of your tongue on top of the pencil.

  • @CorneliusHDybdahl

    Isn't this nasal resonance though?

    • @singwisevocals
      @singwisevocals  5 лет назад +1

      No. All of my sound/resonance and air are going out through my mouth.

    • @CorneliusHDybdahl
      @CorneliusHDybdahl 5 лет назад

      @@singwisevocals But it is entirely possible to have nasal resonance without nasal airflow, since the nostrils are a much smaller opening than the mouth. To make a nasalised sound, you have to partially occlude the oral cavity to get sufficient nasality.

  • @holophrazeinikos2046

    you are singing completely different vowels- did you notice that?

    • @singwisevocals
      @singwisevocals  6 лет назад +6

      Yes! And that's partly the point. I'm actually 'thinking' the same vowel, but when I also think 'over' or 'under' the pencil, my vocal tract makes adjustments. The 'over the pencil' version has more clarity and ring - it sounds better - and feels better.
