I don’t know why, but I just got extremely emotional watching this.

I like how Breen doesn't say "safe" but "safer", saying that City 17 isn't exactly safe.
By safer he meant that its safer for HIM, atleast thats how I understood it.

The term "safer" is true since the outland of City 17 is infested with Xen life forms, caves are filled with antlions, oceans are infested with leeches. Combine thumpers kept antlions out of C17 until the malfunction of the citadel and the city was overflooded with antlions.

What’s sad is that earth will never be the same after the combine, most animals are extinct due to antlions hunting, antlions will never be able to be removed from earth completely, most sea life are extinct, xen creatures and flora are spread across the entire globe
Not to mention North America its in rubbles if not then practically erased. But there might be some animals out there that might not 100% extinct, maybe just hidden from such things.
Animals started to go extinct long before the intervention of the Combine due to limitless Xen portals. then the Combine arrived and wiped the slate clean. Removing the antlions from Earth is quite possible, as in fact, it is even possible to lead them into cannibalism by cutting off their food resources. They breed in hundreds, but also they don't have enough opportunity to hunt and feed themselves. Building a huge impact machine (the ones that the combine used to keep antlions away from their outposts) would be enough, or intentionally giving them toxic food and causing their entire species to die slowly. It's quite possible, and these are the only basic options. There are many more options, the Combine has the technology, they can genetically modify an antlion queen to produce cannibal antlions, so these creatures can hunt each other and go extinct. Science of Half-Life universe has no limits.
What's sad is that the humanity had a chance to cooperate with the Combine. The problem was the G-Man (as we saw in the Alyx). Combine Overwatch wasn't that aggressive in Alyx, they became more aggressive later in the lore. They were actually trying to deal with humans. I think this is more sad. They saw the potential in humans.
Closing the portal is not a solution, it's a problem.
