I have lived in Bangkok for 13 years in 4 different areas and of those places you mention I would choose Asoke. If your coming on a holiday especially as it has the BTS and MRT to get you almost anywhere you would want to go. However there are other places to live long term which is better like where I live. Its only 15 minutes by train from Asoke but the cost of living is way cheaper. The locals are old, friendly and have been living in the area all their life. A pint of beer will cost you 85 baht. Food is crazy cheap. Live music venues. Great bars. Renting a 45 sqm condo will cost you 10k a month. Where is it you ask? Haha. I want it to stay just the way it is.
Great observations! I have lived in Bangkok since 2016, and within 6-8 stops on BTS/MRT from Asoke, there are loads of interesting & authentic areas where costs are REALLY manageable. If you like the sound of what our friend mentions, try Udom Suk, On Nut, or Phra Khanong to the east of centre - barely a 15 minute ride by BTS Sky Train. If you’re here for a 1 week/ 2 week blitz, for sure stick to the centre (Asoke / Phrom Phong / Ploenchit / Silom-Sathorn) - but for a longer, less manic, stay, head out 6-8 stops in any direction.
Good content as usual, Cal. I really like the area between Asok and Phrom Phong. With all the shopping and transportation available, it is easy to get to just about anything you need. As a techie, having Fortune Town only a couple of stops from Asok is the icing on the cake.
Awesome video thanks. Both times in Bangkok I stayed in the sukhumvit area. I'll be coming back to Bangkok for a year as soon as possible and I plan on living Riverside. I figure I can get to sukhumvit easy enough for nightlife and a bar that I like and have the beauty and accessibility of Riverside. But your video has opened up my eyes to even more about Bangkok which I will be happy to explore over the next year. It's such a wonderful City. And crazy too, and I love that.
I love the riverside area. Lived in Thonburi right near BTS krungthonburi for 3 years. One of the nicest most relaxed areas in the city. Thank you for the kind words!
Been to BKK twice as a solo traveller, and stayed in Ploenchit/Chit lom area and Asok/ Sukhumvit area. Both are amazing. Asok takes the cake for me just cos its so freaking convenient! And Terminal 21 food court is crazy cheap like u mentioned! I will be making my third solo trip to BKK next week and will be staying at Asok once again! Perhaps I will check out Silom next time too!
This is a very timely video for me as I will be landing in Bangkok in eleven days and I am still having a tough time deciding which area to book accommodations. Thanks for the info.
As he says in the video it really depends on what you're looking for. Sukumvitt those where I stayed both times in Bangkok and I love it there. The first time I stayed at the solitaire Bangkok 11. The 2nd time the Miami hotel. The Solitaire was definitely more upscale but the Miami was good value. Either way enjoy your stay it's a great place. I was also in Hua Hin and Sam Roi Yot and Jomtien Beach. All were cool for different reasons. When I come back to retire and live it will be Bangkok for the first year. I'll choose to live in the Riverside area but party and hang out in Sukumvitt.
I really enjoyed this video Cal , so informative and the map locations were very well done , I definitely could lost in BKK and be happy, stay safe mate cheers!
Thanks for another good video. I’ve really enjoyed staying in Saphan Taksin over the years. I like that it hasn’t changed much and location is very convenient. Trying Thong Lo at the moment and so far so good. Moving to Ekkamai later on to see what that’s like. I didn’t know much about Rama 9 so thank you for mentioning it. I’ve also read somewhere that Bang Na is an up and coming area so I might explore that too. I totally agree that access to public transport is a must in Bkk. More than 10 minutes walk from a bts station in this heat is a deal breaker lol Thanks again and all the best.
Thanks for the comment and kind words! Saphan Taksin is a great area. Really love Thonburi across the bridge as well. It’s barely changed in a decade since I first lived there… it’s probably the most relaxed and peaceful area in Bangkok. I stayed in Thonglor for a few months. Definitely a nice area but I wanted a little more mall a/c 😅 I like Rama 9 but it can get a little busy. It probably gets divided opinions from expats! Haven’t spent much time in Bangna. Shall check it out! Thanks for the input!
excellent video; very helpful and nicely done; very few video are of such high quality. Thank u for putting so much effort thoroghly explaning different area.
First timer, stay close to the river cuz all main sightseeing attractions are close to the water. Returning bkk addicts: stay close to Asoke/Siam. JIMHO: Siam paragon food court is the best in the world. Pier 21 is 2nd. but Siam paragon blows pier 21 out of the water.
All great areas as well. Almost added Onnut-Phra Khanong to the list, but it started getting too residential. I'll cover the more residential areas in another video. Cheers!
@@thebangkokguide For a short time visitor my favorite BTS areas wouldn’t be too appealing. Not much night life. But as a slow and solo traveler there is a lot of services in this area and very low costs.

Great video, Cal my pal. 🎉 I’ve been in pattaya for about 6 weeks now and I’m finally doing a weekend trip to Bangkok on March 29th. I’ll definitely be having this video playing on repeat as I plan my weekend.
Topnotch video! Very informative! Watch tons of videos in YT and this is by far THE best guide ever. I'm coming to BKK this Aug 6th and can't decide where to stay for my 7 days solo travel. Thanks Cal! Subbed. I'm a fan 🇵🇭
Ah yes you are correct 😅 I didn’t pay close enough attention to the map…funny because I actually lived near Bangyi Kahn for 6 months on the newer addition to the MRT for the circle line 😂 thank you for the input!

When coming to Bangkok I always stay at one of the little guesthouses in Dusit (Tavee Guest House, Sri-Ayuttaya GH etc.). Short walk to the river, a Wat nearby as well as a market. Pretty quiet, and cheap as well. Hasn't changed much since the early 90s.

Wow! So much to see 🙈 for a first timer!!! I'm just not sure how long you recommend to stay in Bangkok? For a two months of course I will leave from Bangkok before returning home too!!
You videos are sooo informative! Thank you. We will be traveling to Thailand and will be bringing our small Chihuahua. I have not been able to find a pet friendly hotel or any type of pet friendly property. Can you help with this? We will be there in July 😊
Thanks for the kind words. For condos, there are plenty of pet friendly ones. Normally it is best to ask an agent when you are looking after you arrive in Thailand. And for the hotel, I would recommend checking Booking.com as they have a pet friendly hotel section. I'm very comfortable with your English diction despite some slight differences but probably acceptable between yours and the diction of some other pronunciation inputs found in American English dictionaries. Regarding closed captions, it's a plus to have Thai places spelled out and displayed correctly on the screen (I'm not sure about it, though), unlike other videos featuring incomprehensible spellings, making it hard for me to follow. Anyway, it's much better than a lot of them on the same subject, for sure. Do you set this up in advance? Or is it just by accident as randomness in closed captioning is a norm here? Engaging and dedicated video. Much appreciated. Thanks.
Hi Cal, I really appreciate the info in this video. I'm very curious about two areas specifically: Thonglor and Ekamai. I have Japanese ties an speak Japanese, and would love to live in an area where that culture is prevalent. I guess my concern would be how much more expensive it is. Is the price difference (for rent, food, etc.) significant? Which of Thonglor and Ekamai is more expensive (I'm guessing Thonglor?). I'm looking to live in Bangkok for at least six months and go from there...Thanks again!!!
Thonglor is more expensive than Ekamai generally. And both are more expensive than most other areas. That being said, prices aren’t too high anywhere so it’s best to look at the area you really like and find what works for you. Traffic gets annoying if you’re far from your preferred location. Cheers!
Haha I’ve been here for 8 years and still haven’t seen everything. But in terms of travel, you could easily spend a couple of weeks here is you want to get out and explore. There is plenty to do!
Want a good clean room, safe, with a bar and restaurant with both Thai and American food? One of my favorites is Bourbon Street. Give it a try, I think you will be very satisfied.
HELLO@ I WOULD LIKE TO ASK ABOUT A NEIBORHOOD THAT IS FULL OF LIFE,NIGHLIFE, DAYLIFE, LOTS OF PEOPLE AND NO PROBLEM THE MONEY OR TH PRICES. WHICH ONE WOULD YOU RECOMMEND? THE SAFEST ZONE
100% agree. I have always prounced it ‘Sigh-am’. And I’m 58. But then this is the same generation that for some reason thinks ‘anyway’ has a plural called ‘anyways’. Which it hasn’t. So not sure why they add an ‘s’ to that word either. Lazy teachers not correcting people.
@@thebangkokguide I just can't make up my mind where to stay during my four nights there early September. I am in my mid 60's, fit for walking distances but the heat may be a killer. Staying near public transport is ideal but so many of the transport hubs are near the classy malls; I am more into markets than the glossy malls. I have wasted hours and hours and hours (and hours and . . . . . .) looking for the ideal spot but can't decide. I am thinking Old Town but not Khaosan Road and mostly relying on river transport. I have over three weeks in SE Asia by myself but oddly my first stop, Bangkok is giving me the most grief trying to work out my itinerary and where to stay

10,000 baht, I hope!!

Anyway, it's much better than a lot of them on the same subject, for sure. Do you set this up in advance? Or is it just by accident as randomness in closed captioning is a norm here? Engaging and dedicated video. Much appreciated. Thanks.
Thanks for the kind words. There is an auto translate function in RUclips but it always gets the Thai names incorrect so I fix them myself. Cheers!
Superb thanks.
Cheers!
How convenient next to Cowboy lol You were my neighbor i lived at Jasmine city
Great neighborhood!
Cheers!
@@thebangkokguide great, thank you!
Good video!
Thank you!
Wake up babe Cal just posted another banger
Thank you for the kind words! 🙏
Can your generation come up with any original comment? Instead of different people saying the same thing in their favourite channel?
great video!!
Thank you 🙏
The city is so massive, it’s completely overwhelming. I feel like I could retire there and spend all my time just exploring it and never see it all.
It is huge, and yet small at the same time as there are a few main core areas. But to fully explore it would take years! Cheers!
สวัสดีค่ะ🙏ยินดีต้อนรับค่ะ
Thank you 🙏
How long would you say a couple would need, to see all of what Bangkok has to offer, without rushing?
Haha I’ve been here for 8 years and still haven’t seen everything. But in terms of travel, you could easily spend a couple of weeks here is you want to get out and explore. There is plenty to do!
westin pool party is closed?
I believe it is still running... I stopped by a month ago.
Want a good clean room, safe, with a bar and restaurant with both Thai and American food? One of my favorites is Bourbon Street. Give it a try, I think you will be very satisfied.
Thanks for the recommendation! Cheers
Bangkok is City of Angel
Beautiful city!
Thank you suggesting attraction
Thank you for the kind words!
What about the Beach Resorts
That would be outside Bangkok as there aren’t any beaches in the city.
What about OnNut BTS station area? Too far away?
Good spot as well but a bit more residential. I’ll cover it in an area guide on where to live soon!
What’s the best place to stay when you are bringing your parents? Definitely not Nana lol but I want to be able to access Terminal 21 easily
Phromphong would be ideal for this situation.
HELLO@ I WOULD LIKE TO ASK ABOUT A NEIBORHOOD THAT IS FULL OF LIFE,NIGHLIFE, DAYLIFE, LOTS OF PEOPLE AND NO PROBLEM THE MONEY OR TH PRICES. WHICH ONE WOULD YOU RECOMMEND? THE SAFEST ZONE
I would recommend either Thonglor or Sukhumvit around Asok. Different nightlife scenes, but both are great.
What apps are you using for hotels Find those prices
Agoda mostly…occasionally booking.com but I find Agoda has lower prices and deals.
Bangkok is similar to Bekasi, part of Jakarta districts
I must visit! Thank you for the comment!
when did it become "seeam" for so many? it's SIGHam
Fair point!
Because that's how it's written and pronounced in Thai.
Hvordan kan det være du laver overskriften dansk og så snakker engelsk
Mvh
You can add translated subtitles and title. Did you use subtitles?
*I'm gonna watch Deadpool & Wolverine in Bangkok on my holiday, cuz China is so much cencership, not cool at all*
Solid plan. I will go check it out too!
Ekkami ?
Ekamai is quite similar to Thonglor. I would group the two streets as an area together.
In north Finnland its nice cold all year around,so why to live in this hot hell?
I kindof like the heat...

Can you also be a tour Guide ?
I haven’t done any of this kind of work before!
The one with the least face masks is the best area
I think that's probably the Asok area. They are definitely coming off slowly over here!
Hello; bro,, your Oke Anton Madura Indonesian bro,, So; In, your Oke Jakarta Bali So, Okey ,🤗😍🙏✌️👍👍💞🇲🇨
Thank you! 🙏
Soi 4😂
Haha yeah it’s a good spot too 😅
If there is a true melting pot in Thailand, it would be Asoke-Thonglor.
This is true. I love the area.
The more I see of Bangkok neighbourhoods the more confused I get
Why is that?
