For every bad situation there are many good things to come of it.... 2.0, you got it down brother. Thanks for all you do to let us travel with you, Ja Yoe!!!
as a girl with a normal urban rental apartment i envy you all for the place to have such equipment... i cannot let this stay overnight on the sidewalk ...
This was one of the coolest videos I've ever seen. What an ingenious setup. I think you've thought of everything and the quality looks top notch. I especially liked the quick connect hydraulic brakes and the dual sided yolk trailer assembly. I'm currently riding a couple recumbent with standard Co-pilot trailers. I love this lifestyle and I'm getting my 2 boys into it quite a bit too. Subscribed, liked and will be following intently!
Matt, your main challenge is not weather, fatigue, or even mud splashing up... it's the thousands of vehicles that not only need to see you but navigate around that beautiful, but WIDE trailer. Your cute little yellow flag and yellow frame are woefully inadequate. You need a BIG yellow and red reflector on the back of that trailer. Something like the Amish put on the back of their buggies.
I spend a lot of time on the road with various bikes. The biggest problem is not visibility. In spite of what people SAY about my visibility, the way people ACT is that they see me just fine, but feel entitled to take stupid chances when passing. This applies to about 10% of drivers. In my opinion, ALL automobile operators should be required to pass annual tests and a 1m safe zone around cyclists should be enforceable with heavy fines or loss or driving privileges.
Mike Buettell There are many unfortunate persons of the Amish persuasion who are injured or killed every year, so the use of their substantial red reflective device is No Assurance of safety.
For the trailer brakes you should look at automatic trailer brakes. Basically, you have a hydraulic master brake cylinder built into the hitch mechanism, when the hitch gets compressed by the trailer overrunning the tow vehicle the brake cylinder also gets compressed applying the brakes.
I love it. I just purchased my first trike and can’t wait to start using it. It’s a used recumbent trike and needs some work, but I can’t wait to dig into it. It’s all aluminum from americruiser, had dual disk brakes and 20-inch wheels all around. It was $300 so it obviously a fixer upper. Can’t wait!
So glad you are posting this. I have an HPV Scorpion plus 20 on order to be shipped to The Bicycle Man this coming week. I had it painted yellow for visibility purposes so I'm glad to see your decision affirming this. Also glad to have your specific comments about components. I will learn more as I ride, but am glad to see you recommend the stand up helpers and that you have the neck rest attached. I opted out of those, but am thinking I need to add them. Much food for thought in your postings and excellent video quality. Thanks. When you get to Cape Cod, let's go for a ride!
I love this setup! If you haven't thought of it yet, you might want to consider mounting an AIRZound horn just below the brake handle so you can alert cars of your presence just by pressing down the ball of your hand on the trigger. I have had one on my trike and can brake and blast the horn simultaneously. It's so loud that I was able to alert cars behind me approaching from around a blind curve while riding in Yosemite - they slowed down and gave me the clearance I needed.
Brother, I hardly know what to say. My first trip this coming summer will be to a local campsite and back, about 120 miles round trip. I'm so far from all of that technicality my head is spinning. I do really love the trailer. That would be great for mounting a solar panel for battery charging. Have fun and BE CAREFUL out there. God bless.
You are going to give us all a serious case of GAS (gear acquisition syndrome) with your video... As a fellow trike traveller on a much smaller scale I do have an idea of the weight and windage penalty you are giving yourself, and it is really good to see you look so fit and healthy ;-) Get going, we will follow you every mile! Gute Fahrt und viel Glück from Germany!! (no, that does not mean what it sounds like...;-) ...)
I have seen you on the Spezi in Germany with your drone. But i don't realized that this was the jayoe-man from youtube. Now i would like to wish you all the best for your trip by this way. Good luck on this adventure with your great trike.
The Scorpion Plus gives you a higher sitting posture that allows you to be seen easier and SOONER. LONG DOUBLE WHIPS in the rear will let you connect the parallel whips to each other to keep them from scissoring. It will also give you a convenient place to put a super bright flashing light pointed backwards at the 6 ft. high or higher level. This gives ALL stacked up and impatient drivers behind you a super early opportunity to see you OVER the tops of the preceding vehicles. One of the most dangerous traffic scenarios involves stacked up vehicles quickly coming up behind you and during a rushed time of day. Morning, end of lunch hour, and late afternoon.
Love your set-up. I reckon that even an old bugger like me could get around on something like what you have put together there - very impressive. If ever you get to Kalgoorlie in Western Australia in your travels - I'd love to catch up.
Matt im glad to see you back on the road ! good luck on your journey ! still waiting for you to swing by nyc to get that cold beer at the end of your journey. well that's if your trip still swings by NYC
We used Arkel 'bent' panniers on our Hase Pino for our 2012 End to End in the UK. Even with waterproof covers, stuff inside still got damp, so I suggest - unless they have improved the design - you wrap crucial content inside plastic bags. Jiayou!
The drone box blew my mind. The whole video I was thinking about where I would carry my Phantom with me if I were going on a trek of some type...then you opened that hardshell and there it was. Amazing setup you've got there!!!
took me a while to find one that fit to convert it over. Hindsight, i would like to find a box that would allow me the ability to store the drone with the props attached, so i dont have to assemble the drone every time.
I looked long and hard for a storage solution that kept the props on the quad, but ultimately found that most of the options out there in some way, shape, or form ended up putting some pressure on the blades from the egg-shell foam in the top of the case. This pressure, over time, I've been told can cause the props to very slightly warp. Now, I'm not sure if that's actually true or not...and if you're using the quad regularly it probably wouldn't be a problem...but for me it was enough to steer me away from storage with the props on. I'd rather take a few seconds to thread them on then end up with the quad not flying correctly due to some slightly misshaped props.
Great setup. Thanks for sharing your build. That trailer is FANTASTIC. A small front wheel for use as a grocery cart would make it perfect. I'm currently seriously thinking of ditching my vehicle for a do-it-all bike setup. I'm over 50 and was rendered homeless in part by the 2020 fires and I need something like an e-assist off-road farm utility truck-bike to get groceries and stay fit. I'm undecided about what to choose. I'm looking at quads like TrikExplor and Pony4...... tadpoles like yours, but with fat tires for beachcombing, or a delta like the Hase Kettweisel or Chooch. The options out there are staggering. I'm sick of our expensive, disposable, car-centric culture and want to do my part in changing the world for the bettter. Bicycle RV's are plentiful in places like Germany. I'd love to see more people develop these. For awareness I think everyone should watch "Stroads" by Not Just Bicycles.
I think it would be too cool for the drone to deploy on the fly! Mebbe in the movies! Just wanted to complement and thank you for your inspiration! I'm getting ready to tour Pa. On a fat ebike. Also I'm 64, handicapped....should be interesting.
I think since it's a trike with dedicated suspension, and even weight distribution... There's no need for air tyres. U can use a pager thinner tyre with solid tyre like tannus tyre. It will stay puncture free so that it's perfect for tours without fear of puncture
...♥the trike & trailer, how much to get all that as it is, regular seat be 👌,no drone, yes storage ... do you make a 🐴 run with your violin... thanks great video.
I see that this video is six years old. Hope the tour went well. I love the trailer. Is anyone producing it? I love the idea of recumbent trikes, but I’ve never ridden one. Your approach to touring is radically different than mine, but I’m glad it works for you. That level of expense and gadgetry would oppress me. I wish you all the best.
Right now, in July 2022, Matt has built a brand new trike, a custom made AZUB with a lot of cool stuff: full suspension, 26" tires all around, and no trailer! It turns out that current technology allows him to have smaller equipment for his videos. ruclips.net/video/Ytq6DTf4v7g/видео.html
Wow! I'm gotten nothing done today.... I'm just mesmerized over everything I've watched concerning you, and your HP Trike experiences. I'm just getting into trikes, and wanted to go after the Pedelec but after seeing how you're doing it I'm having some second thoughts. I'm ready to order my Scorpion 26 fs now but I'm really thinking about spending the extra money to electrify it in a different way now. Your Videos Have Been Game Changers 4 Me.... Keep up the great work. I'm Subscribing.
+Willie Faison haha.. thanks willie... glad you enjoyed. I am actually considering some type of electrical assist as well. let me know what you decide on. and make sure when you get your HP you let the person you buy it from know you learned a lot about them from my videos. :)
I'm going to consult with Brian Goocher, he works at Jack's Bike Shop in Dearborn, MI. I'm going to build it and set it up to tour the trails around the City, and film the 2016 Dream & Gratiot Cruises. So yes I'm taking notes form you. Brian told me that they use a different brand than the Go Swiss, so I'll fill you in on all the details of the set up they do use when I see him next week. Maybe I can get a senior citizen discount for using your name lol, as for we 're all following you, as your continue to do your thing. I just sit back and imagine the possibilities! It's a leap of faith for me to go out there and buy that Trike but I'm going to roll it everywhere I go. Godspeed and safe travels my friend.
I just purchased a slightly used 2013 Pedelec today for $4700. It'll be delivered next week. your thoughts on the features? Shimano XT 27 speed drive train with dura ace bar end shifters Dual battery set up for longer range rides between charges and a 3rd battery carried in panniers for extra long rides and range. Never run out of electric assist rear suspension rack rear fender neck rest dual B & M mirrors Horn It horn dual water bottle holders and water bottles two front and rear tail lights run by the lithium ion batteries 500 watt Go Swiss motor, controller regenerative brakes Right brake lever controls two front disc brakes 160mm rotors Left brake lever controls rear wheel disc brake 180 mm rotor parking v-brake on rear wheel rear light comes on when braking Tektro Auriga hydraulic disc brakes on front and rear wheels Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires/tubes 3 batteries w/keys (less than 25 charge cycles each)
I especially like the side bags within reach while riding. Are they insulated enough for ice and drinks for a full day trip or do they have a version that caters for that?
A better equipped trike for your 2nd world tour. But my only concern with the trailer behind you is whether it's reflective enough when you're triking at night. Those heavy vehicles in the highways are driving fast and avoid being hit the 2nd time..
That is one Sweet touring set....you've obviously poured time and cash into that vehicle. I am praying that a trade for a KMX machine I have arranged works out. Been an avid Push and Motor Cyclist since my first bike back in 1977...can't wait. I am also a keen a mature photography nut and I also have a fleet of quad copter's for that reason. Anyhow very best of luck to you I will try to keep up with your progress. 👍
Man that is a complicated set up! I've ridden across the US and through the mountains of California and Oregon and then back to my home in southern California along the west coast. In both tours I road my 2005 Catrike Trail with just a rear rack and some Arkel pannier bags. Even with a simple set up like that I had some problems. Of course the only movie I was making was in my mind.
Definitely a cool setup. 👍🏼 A mobile movie studio on 3 wheels! I would like to try a recumbent trike for touring someday. But right now for me a regular 2 wheeled bike works better for me. Just more mobile easier to transport via plane. Plus I like being able to bring my bike into hotel rooms when touring. I would imagine a trike set up like that requires some extra care. I’d be nervous to leave it outside while sleeping in my room. Anyway, i really enjoy your channel. And I know i will try a trike someday down the road. Cheers.
this is great but it seems you have the resources that must of us don't have, looks like everything here can run about 20,000 bucks. Really impressive, wish i could afford it.
the JaYoe Nation yea i love biking and commuting on my bike with my trailer I really hope I can try out a trike soon but as I commute through a city I'm very concerned about being so low, I fear not being seen then BAM. Looking forward to watching your round the world trip.
Not sure if this site gets monitored anymore and perhaps it's been asked/answered before but just curious, not counting any freebies or discounts provided by manufacturers what is the total cost do you think of your trike and trailer (not the drone) for your 2.0 trip? Also with all the high end components did you have any issues with replacement parts or repair availability along the way?
I ditched the trailer after a few thousand km due to my knee tearing up on me. Most of the other components were great. I did upgrade the gearing somewhat. You can search my videos for schlumpf and see the most current ones. As for cost.... I keep that to myself. You can find most of that info with a few calls. It was not cheap.
An impressive setup. I know you're not worried about the weight, but I'm worried about it for you. I've done some touring before and my first few times I realised I was just not travelling light enough. I know with all your camera gear you'll never be able to travel very light, but still... Mountain roads are going to be interesting.
hello, 😉👍 you hear the company in Germany, not the replacement of my trailer. equal to yours. I need the automatic brake fitting. that colega the Trailer to the bike. you show it in the video as well. can you help me find him new!? puk too much mine at the airport year overpaid, at the moment of unloading. 😭
Love it ! Why no roof with solar panels (or semi enclosure for all weather) ?...the missing element ...solar recharge system....up the game brother...thanks !
wow i really love this whole set , the only thing is i would want the trailer to be something my large dog can sit in instead of a trunk. im planning a cross country bike trip from california to new york. this would be perfect! im kinda afraid to ask what this all cost
jayoe- did adding the disc brakes make the width a bit wider???? Thinking of adding brakes to my Burley, as it seems to me ,going now steep mountain passes could push rear trike wheel sideways....etc
I stopped counting once i hit 13,000 and thats over a year ago and i bought a lot of upgrades since to go lighter can more compact.. was just wondering before i switch over to the trike .. gear i have will work ... just get the trike and do lot of upgrades looking at this one as i like to go anywhere... www.icetrikes.co/explore-our-trikes/full-fat
Matt missed episode on why you ditched your custom trailer. Would you provide brief explanation. Been trying to purchase y shaped hitch (trailer to Trike) no luck. Plan to ride across America in winter 2020 to Spring 2021 & need sturdy hitch trailer combo for gear 250 lbs. (includes 2 dogs * 1 cat) any info tips greatly appreciated. Difficult finding quality trike trailer able to handle 250 lbs.
Here in the Netherlands we have a LOT of (sometimes "high-tech) bicycles. But the real issue I have is the safety with those high-speed low profile bikes. When you are in a car it's often very difficult to see these bikes, especially when they drive that fast. Especially when the weather is a bit drowsy/cloudy.
1:40 i live on a small island, with small roads.... i ride a few recumbent bikes, but this is why i would be reluctant to ride a trike. i know they not much more than shoulder width, and drivers should be giving me a wide berth anyway.... but in reality, they often don't.
I do hope that you can pull the different equipment companies to partner with HP to build a 'world tourer' version of the Scorpions for the rest of us to buy without going through the hard and toil of customizing everything ourselves. Especially the gear changer bits with custom grinding and such sound a bit daunting to do without specialist help. Good luck on restart of your tour. Looking forward to follow the videos.
+TheReiskaC HAHA... if i told you how much i spent no that rig you may thing twice about that... ;) all said and done it was Mid size new car price....
+the JaYoe Nation Yes, I figured that was the case... I ride a trike myself as well and have been looking at the HP's and they cost an arm and leg anyway much less with all the pimping up you've done. I was kinda hoping if they made a standard production version of the trike itself with your bar- and gear mods (not the trailer) and 'mass produced' that (as far as any trikes are mass produced) we would see some kind of price benefit from it as well.
+the JaYoe Nation, Yepp, (A "JaYoe" vesion would have been VERY cool though!!!)The one I just picked up from HPV was nearly $7,000 and its not even suspended or have half of your options!!! Crazy price but a great product!!! And your video series is the ONLY thing that led me to their product! Can't wait for you to get back in the saddle!!!! Be safe my friend!
Hey Matt, I had to replay it twice, and stop it the 2nd time, cuz I almost missed it the 1st time watching, LOVE THE character in your spokes in your right tire. Have you given any thought to re covering the character in retro reflective JaYoe Yellow? The headlights from cross traffic would probably light it up, while in motion, like a light bulb. I was just thinking, from a Safety point how it would improve your visibility.
Amazing rig! I want to go thru the U.S. when I purchase mine. As a partially paralyzed former Firefighter/EMT I want to feel less of a hindrance to everyone and bring awareness to the PTSD we also get.
Admirable. Drowningly mouthwatering. Not a thing to disagree with. Maybe I'm just overimpressed. Very much impressed.
For every bad situation there are many good things to come of it.... 2.0, you got it down brother. Thanks for all you do to let us travel with you, Ja Yoe!!!
+Gary E. Sims your welcome gary... thanks for watching.
I am impressed you are able to respond to messages a video of 2015.
I like the detail you put your trike together with beside it being fun. How you set up the drone was great.
Awesome machine n video sir. I'd say this video of yours should be mandatory for all strikers large n small. Best trike video all time. Thank you Ty

Awesome video. Miss the trike tour
I know its 7 years ago but that trailer would sure make a handy table for camping and living on the road.
Good to see you again!
What a wondrous adventure on a way-cool piece of machinery! Happy trails my friend.
thanks!
A very sweet pimped out Tricycle, so many practical applications.

Wow! Just watching for the first time, and it’s Sept 2nd, 2018! Safe travels
I especially like the side bags within reach while riding. Are they insulated enough for ice and drinks for a full day trip or do they have a version that caters for that?
Impressive setup and the drone shots definitely kick up your game!
+rcfanaticdublin thanks boss.... look forward to keeping in touch.
Really into the elec/ acoustic music intro..very JaYoe and Kickin' It!!! Didnt find info on it i the descriptions...Happy,Safe Travels!!! 😀🚵
So nice to see your video! Aidoo trailer is somthing I'm going to look at closer. I have already 4 trailers from different manufacturers.
/Sweden
they are awesome.. just a bit heavy... thats all
@@JaYoeNation I always use e-bikes so the weight is less important :-)
Fantastic ride! But even better would be a solar panel on the trailer with a e-motor and battery im it
AWESOME! Man I am so looking forward to your adventures!
Eric Doberstein the joy I’d travel is making mistakes and going out the way you want too. So many different ways to ride and stories to tell
Man.... great setup, every detail is thought about :)
Now that is one brilliant trike!! :D
Awaiting your further adventures Matt. Good luck and Jayoe!
Did you have brakes on all three wheels on the trike? Could have been done with a second cable splitter.
+Kevin Lynch I have brakes on the trailer, and the two front tires. the rear wheel has a parking brake.
Awesome! Would love to such.
Cheers.
PURE AWESOMENESS!!!! SHABAM!!!!! BOOOM! 😁😁😀😀😀😀😀😃😃😃😄
Awesome! Looking forward to following your adventure.
Love your video!
Small question - why not using fat tiers??
Thank you!
hey thanks... first the tires will not work on my trike frame setup... second fat tires have a lot more weight and friction on the road.
Very informative video. Thanks so much for taking the time to create and upload this video. #datadiggerdon
this is great but it seems you have the resources that must of us don't have, looks like everything here can run about 20,000 bucks. Really impressive, wish i could afford it.
yea.... i have poured a lot into the setup.. that is for sure.. i want it to last.
the JaYoe Nation
yea i love biking and commuting on my bike with my trailer I really hope I can try out a trike soon but as I commute through a city I'm very concerned about being so low, I fear not being seen then BAM.
Looking forward to watching your round the world trip.
Impressive and clean setup. "Burn Rubber... ...Not Your Soul" #BurnRubber___NotYourSoul thanks a lot for sharing :-).
I'm loving the drone! Make sure you bring enough batteries haha!
+Nikon Jon I have 5 i can carry with me.
This is amazing awesome! One question though is how are you take that to fly? Do you put them in boxes? How big and how many boxes?
An impressive setup. I know you're not worried about the weight, but I'm worried about it for you. I've done some touring before and my first few times I realised I was just not travelling light enough. I know with all your camera gear you'll never be able to travel very light, but still... Mountain roads are going to be interesting.
+TheAegisClaw I already rode the mountains of inland china for 3 months... so i had some practice fully loaded.
hello, 😉👍 you hear the company in Germany, not the replacement of my trailer. equal to yours.
There was a Veltop (fairing/enclosure/roof thing) mentioned. And 2 dynamos for charging whatever needs that.
Matt is a great sales/spokesperson.
wow i really love this whole set , the only thing is i would want the trailer to be something my large dog can sit in instead of a trunk. im planning a cross country bike trip from california to new york. this would be perfect! im kinda afraid to ask what this all cost
did you take your trip??
jayoe- did adding the disc brakes make the width a bit wider???? Thinking of adding brakes to my Burley, as it seems to me ,going now steep mountain passes could push rear trike wheel sideways....etc
AWSOME video just the info benign looking for ... thinking of getting into bike trek .... just one question total setup cost
hmmmm... i cannot really say. its a lot! but i piecemeal a lot of it together. over 10K for sure.
AWESOME---I want one. Please Santa!
I want that exact trike!
Awesome. Just awesome
mean trick out...wuna watch some more of ur adventures...bon voyages
Matt missed episode on why you ditched your custom trailer. Would you provide brief explanation. Been trying to purchase y shaped hitch (trailer to Trike) no luck. Plan to ride across America in winter 2020 to Spring 2021 &
need sturdy hitch trailer combo for gear 250 lbs. (includes 2 dogs * 1 cat)
any info tips greatly appreciated. Difficult finding quality trike trailer able to handle 250 lbs.
Can I get similar equipment(including trike and other parts) from Chinese local companies?
Was always not wanting a gyro as it places a drag on the wheel because of the permanent magnets.
Yea. There was some resistance. But it was overall just too heavy.
Here in the Netherlands we have a LOT of (sometimes "high-tech) bicycles. But the real issue I have is the safety with those high-speed low profile bikes. When you are in a car it's often very difficult to see these bikes, especially when they drive that fast. Especially when the weather is a bit drowsy/cloudy.
i dont go that fast... and i have lots of colors, lights and flags... im surprisingly visible.. like a parade float.. hah
1:40 i live on a small island, with small roads.... i ride a few recumbent bikes, but this is why i would be reluctant to ride a trike.
i know they not much more than shoulder width, and drivers should be giving me a wide berth anyway.... but in reality, they often don't.
I thought I was A Total Trike Crazy but I must dawn my hat to you. You will love the Veltop.
don.
That was an amazing video!
You have a spectacular set up and I'll look forward to all the videos of you're Journeys around the world......🚲......🌎
I do hope that you can pull the different equipment companies to partner with HP to build a 'world tourer' version of the Scorpions for the rest of us to buy without going through the hard and toil of customizing everything ourselves.
+TheReiskaC Its easy buy a rohloff and schlupf speed drive. Terracycle have lots of nice gadgets for mounting stuff, buy what you need.
WOW THIS IS A HEAVY DUTY ROAD TRIP
amazing upgrades on the trike brother !
+Pedro loaiza thanks Pedro!
Nice set up. I am planning to hit the road soon. I have a problem. I’m diabetic and need to keep my insulin refrigerated. Do you have any suggestions?
