  • My ultimate destination for the second railfanning trip to northwestern US was returning to Marias Pass in Montana to do more railfanning (after leaving there so impressed after the week leading up to Memorial Day).
After two days on the Columbia River Gorge (link in the description), it was time for me to push on closer, day by day, to my final destination aforementioned.

En route, I followed the BNSF Lakeside Subdivision (from Pasco, WA to Spokane, WA) the first day (first time railfanning on this line). There was little to no trains during the morning hours, but from noon onwards, trains, especially westbounds, were running steadily until darkness falls. There were also a few trains that I did not get on video, which made the day overall a very busy day. I ended the day on a Union Pacific trackage rights train (Potash train) with a few Canadian visitors as well as one from home rails back in the east. The next day, I followed the Montana Rail Link 4th Subdivision from Sandpoint in Idaho to Plains in Montana, with a stop for a few hours in Sandpoint for some busy action and catching a meet on a video at Plains (there were a few other trains that i passed on on the MRL as well as another meet at Thompson Falls, MT). From there, it was on to Whitefish, MT, where I will start the railfanning on Marias Pass.
As of 2022, a new bridge is being constructed over Lake Pend Oreille (the existing single-tracked bridge is a bottleneck to train traffic as Sandpoint funnels in traffic from both BNSF & MRL). I did return to MRL in August of 2022 and the searchlight signals on MRL 4th Sub between Paradise and Sandpoint are still undisturbed.
Sometime after this trip, a new section of double track is completed between Cocolala & West Algoma, and both points are replaced by a double crossover called "Reasor". The single track section between Otis Orchards & Irvin just east of downtown Spokane is still as is.
