The idea of having the music so synched up with what's going on in-game was a fantastic way of representing the concept of order, and now I wish I knew what our plaza could have looked like if Side Order won and they went all in on that idea.
Thing is the main game would likely be different from the DLC if Order won. There's that dreamlike element to Side Order, because of course, that likely would've been lost if Order won.
Think we got lucky, being DLC it means they can do what they want without sacrifice to the core gameplay, made the whole experience possible. While I'd never trade it for anything it's interesting to think about. We probably still would've had a roguelite if chaos won, but with a more unhinged, bestial theme, turf ruined beyond recognition. Both story mode and side order being more gritty and in-your-face, order's whole thing seems to be keeping vague. The artbook has an idol concept of three sanitized looking inklings(?), I wonder if they could've come close to what an order themed trio would be. With chaos' motif being an ode to culture and community, order could've been more about material evolution, tech everywhere no doubt with the podcasts actually making a lot more sense to be by a group aiming to be more efficient, maybe in a more traditional podcast setting, don't know about the hub though
@@NuiYabuko the dreamlike element is all there would have been if we won, because Marina was all about the best aspects of what "order" means to her. I think a lot of Team Chaos players (and players who were not around for finalfest) don't grasp what MArina was getting at because she's intentionally vague about it - which is literally the whole point. "Order," to Marina, means she doesn't want the risk of going back to her old life. That's what "an unchanging world" means to her. It means "I've gotten what I truly wanted and I don't want to lose that" which is venerable at best, a response to genuine trauma at worst, either way fully justifiable. Pearl just wanted there to be no rules for her to obey - which is funny because she's already a billionaire (canonically raised with a LOT of wealth) and never had to follow any rules anyway, because there aren't consequences for the rich in the irst place. And yet. The team that stans an ugly rich girl with no personality who never had to work for her talents is the team that won. IDK I'm just still really irked by how the whole thing went down, and I feel like we've only been seeing the actual least charitable interpretations of what was wanted by possibly the most charitable and "for the people" character we've ever seen Nintendo put out (putting aside literal gods and such). Not trying to attakc any Chaos fans, I just think finalfest wasn't handled very well and newer players don't seem to grasp the gravity of what went down, it was on the scale of recent general election ins the US for the fandom, and I think a lot of people may have forgotten already (which is fair).
i’m so glad someone else noticed the visual audio in the square and the lobby, i’ve probably spent more time just listening to the music and watching the effects than actually playing side order lmao. also this is a great video (the pallet is a soundboard wtf???? i’m gonna waste more hours doing that now)
fun fact about color chips: the sounds they make are pulled from off the hook and acht/dedf1sh's songs! it feels like it symbolizes something if you use agent 8's palette, i think also another fun fact: if you dont walk or anyþing in the lobbt for long enough, pearl sits at 1 of 3 locations! great for picture mode
I think music and rhythm was a focus with this dlc, a few other things I noticed was: - the lucky bomb ability exploding to the beat of the current song - gliding inside of the big shape that appears in the foyer when the music shifts plays a special vocal track (spoilers) - the final bosses attacks and shield breaking going to the beat I really love all the little details in this dlc, makes it something really special I think
@@NuiYabukoI love the boss' attacks doing that! X3 That feels really satisfying, to me, personally, especially the charging and then the ink bubbles being shot out, it sounds so satisfying I'll have to listen to the shields more next time! ^^ I'm sure they sound awesome too!
if you pause at the final boss and play the special palette in a snaking line (first row left to right, second row right to left, etc) it plays ebb & flow
@Bucketnetta I should note that this is in the original final fight after you collect all the chips, not the rematch, so if you want to hear it you'll have to change to the og fight in the foyer.
And this is only the tip of the iceberg, there are audio cues for practically everything in Side Order. The enemies are named after music terms, and they all have a subtle effect on the music when they're on the map. Even the attacks from the bosses have an audio cue, Side Order's music is just so dynamic. Ans that is why no upload of this DLC's soundtrack will ever truly do it justice, it just feels so amazing for the music to actually _respond_ to everything that's happening around you.
@@atoaster1209 Look up what the second half of each of the enemies' names mean in music. If you listen close enough, you'll notice them in the music when they're present on the map.

all of splatoons sound and music design is incredible, the way the shops' music all melts into each other, the way the music strings together so well, and SO much more. and that's just one reason why splatoon is my favourite game.
OOOHHH!! Thank you for showing off the touch screen soundboard thing! I really couldn't figure out what Pearl meant by the music in the lobby was the same as my last Pallet! My switch's touch screen has been broken for SEVERAL years now so I don't notice things like that.
finally someone saying something good about splatoon and the side order dlc. everything ive been seeing they only focus on the bad details and not the cool things like this
Im a huge sucker for sound design so all of that alone made this DLC worth it for me lol Like even while fighting there are things that are synced to the beat.
Glad I’m not the only one who enjoys dynamic video game music, and the SFX that complements them well. I first noticed it in Pkmn Black and White, where new instruments would play while you walk through a route, and if you were still, you wouldn’t hear those same instruments.

@@JamesMoneyPlease do! The music in Side Order is so dynamic, this video didn't even mention so many of the ways the music and the gameplay are intertwined.
One cute thing about the tower lobby is that when the lights go dim and the icosahedron appears in the middle, if you use the dashpad to launch yourself into the icosahedron an extra layer is added to the song while you're inside it!
Side Order feels like the closest in vibes Splatoon has gotten to de Blob, esp de Blob 2; you are fighting against someone who wants the world to be colorless and the population to be mindless under their control, to do so you work to color your surroundings with help from your pink drone friend as you upgrade yourself and the drone, as you progress bringing more color to the world around you, the music picks up more and actions you perform take place with music stings, the enemies you face also wield black ink that removes the color you've added and will kill you if you are exposed to it for long, the final boss also while having a very menacing demeanor turns out to act like a childish brat.
In the lobby, they've even added music-synced elements to the *back* of the elevator. And the devs made a way for us to get back there, because they knew we would. Man, this game is something special (Glide from a high point towards one of the back corner pillars. You'll have to touch the water and bounce, but keep gliding and land on the platform surrounding one of those pillars. Go around the back of the pillar and there'll be a conveyor to shoot you upwards, which you can use to glide behind the elevator and check out the sound visualizer. There's a pillar and conveyor on both corner pillars, so it doesn't matter which direction you choose.)
Yep music that does that is a masterpiece, like look at the shops in all 3 squares of splatoon, the shops have different beats depending on the character that owns the shop
Thanks for covering this and having a sit down on the audio-visual queues of Side Order! Been looking for more content on the musical quirks of the DLC and this was fun to watch!
It reminds me of some games and especially in vr games where an object that comes closer to your ear it sounds louder, or like in "I expect you to die" there are segments where you can wear a headset (in game). Regardless if you're wearing or not as you play the audio continues even if you cannot hear it. Also Proximity chat in Lethal Company. Not only are the effects on execution of it done perfectly but there are neat things that some might not notice at first. One being that the closer you are to a person holding a walkie talkie you can hear what the other end is saying. It's things like that I feel add a lot to the immersion. Rather than just listening to an mp3 the audio feels as if it has depth.
Splatoon 2 did a similar soundboard-esque thing for it's lobby screen. Hitting the shoulder buttons and triggers would cause vocalizations to come out on beat with the chilled out music on the waiting screen. I think this is an evolution of that experiment.
I like to tell myself that these details in the sound design are canonicly made by Marina, the Memverse aims to free the octolings from their brainwashing, herself having been freed by the melody of the calamari inkantation, she attempted to reproduce a similar effect by using those effects everywhere
wile it isn't about the cool vfx tuned with the audio or even the lobbies, I've noticed that the main theme of the original side order trailer, appears nowhere in the game, aside from one very mild leitmotif at the veery beginning and even then it's cut suuper short
