Just found your channel and I can't stop binge watching you two!!! Your work is beautiful, easy to understand, and exactly what I'm wanting to do in our home! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and tips...looking forward to seeing what else you have to share in the future! Also...loved the nap break! Sleep time is precious when it comes to toddlers!!! 😂😀
Very beautiful guys!!!!!! I painted all my trim in every room of my small ranch home last winter. I wish I had known about that stuff to add for brush strokes!
My home flooded close to Houston from Harvey and I'm using silver drop on my whole house. And Irish mist right above it on the swatch for cabinets. And the island darker also in the same swatch. Thanks for your ideas and videos
Thank you so much for your videos I have been looking for a way to do my door trim and I found your channel and I just love the door trim I am going to do it as soon as we have a free weekend I just love how simple you broke it down thanks again Blessings
Nice video!! One tip I saw about the spacing, instead of using nickels use a carpenter square. About the same thickness but easier to handle. Just my two cents.
I love your guys' style, this looks so great! Would you mind sharing what style of crown molding and baseboards you have with your shiplap (if any)? In a lot of tutorials I've seen, they use the base board as the starting point for their shiplap. The previous owners of our house installed baseboards when they re-did all of the drywall, but some of it is different heights and the seams/mitered edges are off an 1" or more in many spots. It will definitely need replaced! I'm looking forward to doing this to some areas of our 1890's home to give it a more farmhouse-feel!
I have a ceiling that used to have ceiling tiles so there are furring strips present. I would like to install shiplap to the ceiling but wasn't sure if the strips would be supporting enough to not have the planks bow. Would you recommend also using construction adhesive?
A couple of things I never see videographers talk about on these shiplap videos: 1) How were corners done? Were they stacked every other plank, or did you cut one wall the length of the corner and but the adjoining wall up to it? 2) Did you do any molding work? 3) Did you seal each corner with caulking to make each look smooth?
Love it! What did you guys use on the outside corner by the thermostat to cover where the shiplap would meet? I would assume just leaving the raw edges wouldn't look all that great and it looks like you guys put something on the corner?
Hey, we used 18 G finishing nails. I am not sure exactly which model the nail gun was. Just look for a finish nailer that will shoot 16 or 18g nails and you will be good. I recently saw a new nail that is tiny. Almost like a needle which eliminate the need to go back and fill in nail holes. Haven't had a chance to check it out but I will before my next finishing nail project. Best of luck
We simply used small wooden corner trim pieces. Nailed them in place, filled holes with wood filler them painted them along with the ship lap. Finished our really nice. Thanksn
Great job and I get why you use the mdf... I personally hate that stuff. It's not the kind of stuff that will last for ages. Why do we make stuff so temporary these days? Lame. I have a 100 year old house, and the care they took and the materials they used to build it... built to last a long long time. I wish we would all care as much as they did.
Blair I would use hardwood ply. Still cost effective and a smooth finish. It does require light sanding, but will be a longer lasting option. Of course, a genuine board would be nice, but this is costly in general. Although in some places, you can get paint grade lumber at a decent price. What I don't like about the plywood is the gassing out that it will continue to do. Any manufactured material tends to do this. MDF may as well be a super cardboard... but in the end, it just won't last for ages. I like to think about the lifespan of the project. Things are better if they last for generations.
Maybe this is too basic a question, but WHERE do you get the shiplap you were using. When I check the big stores it is expensive and sold piece by piece. Would be 1000s to do one wall much less a whole room. Also a lot of it seems prefinished and I don't care about that. Anyway, any suggestions or what to google would be awesome. Looks great.
When you have an inside corner is the shiplap butted or did you cut them at a 45 degree angle? Also i noticed on outside corners you have a trim peice on the corners and to seperate the ceiling from the wall transition. Is the a furring strip?
What do you do when your room is longer than your boards? I've been trying to find a tutorial that addresses this but haven't had any luck so far. Do you just have to use a product that comes in extended lengths? Or do you put it up the same way a wood floor is done and stagger it?
I would just run it straight into the wall to end it if there is no casing or trim. I hope that helps. I am not exactly which if I understood your question correctly. Best of luck.
Great video. My wife and I, just recently bought our first home and the prior owners got it in their heads to "texture" the living room walls and then paint them a hideous orange/brown paint. We had considered sheet rocking the entire room until we discovered the "shiplap" way. Thanks so much for this great video which gives us the confidence to do this ourselves.
Hey Gregory. We haven't started on the project yet (we've had a contractor working at our place for about 2 mos., and he's nearing completion on everything). Soon, (maybe in another few weeks), I hope to be working on this technique. I'm pretty confident that it will be just what we were wanting. Going to paint the shiplap a Scanda blue (Sherwin Williams) with off white trim. I'll let you know. Let us know how yours went.
Thanks for the great response. Whats your guidance on when to paint? Before or after nailing to wall? I have seen both ways on youtube. I am afraid if I wait until after mounting, my "nickel lines" will trap paint and look less clean.
I wish you would have done a video showing how the hallway looks completed. I was waiting for that at the end and it didn't happen. What I can see looks great.
Does anyone have any guidance on whether or not to paint the MDF/Plywood prior to brad nailing to the wall? Seems most youtube videos paint once on the wall.

Awesome video, I thinking about doing a shiplap ceiling in my laundry room!

Your shiplap mdf paint looks flawless. How did you paint it? Paint roller or brush?

Great video, what type of MDF did you use? Also what width did you cut ot at?
Beautiful job!
that looks awwwwwesome!!!!!!
Awesome video. Quick question. Do you recommend starting from the bottom?
What gauge brad nails do you use for the shiplap boards? Which Ridgid nail gun do you use? Great videos. Looking forward to doing this in my home.

Very nice, Is it practical to do complete rooms like a living room?
Looks awesome, did you install the door trim over the shiplap? If so, how did you hide the ship lap gaps in the door jamb?
Hey Sam, I actually butted the shiplap up against the side of the door trim. I am 99% sure what is what I did. Thanks and good luck.
Hey there, loved this video very informative. Do you have any ideas for putting up shiplap mdf boards without having to take off standard baseboards?
Beautiful!
so glad I found this channel. always learning. what sheen did you use for the walls and trim and what primer? thank you
Beautiful couple! What did you use to cover corners, and how did you install them? Thank you!
We simply used small wooden corner trim pieces. Nailed them in place, filled holes with wood filler them painted them along with the ship lap. Finished our really nice. Thanksn
@@PerspectiveDesignCo thank you! ? On the liquid product you use to thin out the trim paint can it be used with other paints?
Yes. Other water based paints. Not sure about oil based painted. 👍🏻
@@PerspectiveDesignCo thank you very much

What would you use instead?

Great job! What brand is your Ultra Pure White paint?
What did you do on the exposed corners where the shiplap meets up? Did you add a piece of trim?
what did you do with the shiplaps edges where the ceiling meets the wall? did you just leave a gap or put some quarter round?
Can I put the MDF over paneling? If so, does it still have to go into studs?
Do you have to remove existing baseboard before putting up shiplap on the walls?
No, you wouldn't necessarily. You could just start on top of your existing baseboards.
great jobbb mate :)
Hey Guys, thanks for the video, did you paint the top and bottoms of the mdf in the 1/8 in gap? If so how do you get a brush in there?
Matthew Hallum cool, thanks for the reply and again for the videos
We have an 11 1/2 ft wall we are going to do this on. What is the right way to stagger. I don't want it so uniform looking.
What do you do when your room is longer than your boards? I've been trying to find a tutorial that addresses this but haven't had any luck so far. Do you just have to use a product that comes in extended lengths? Or do you put it up the same way a wood floor is done and stagger it?
Matthew Hallum do you put a nickel gap between those boards as well? Or put them touching? Thanks!
Would floetrol be ok to mix with paint to paint a dresser? Does it only work with latex paint?
Penetrol is used for oil based paint.
How would you end the ship lap when entering another room? There is no header when entering my living room from my hallway. I'm in an apartment in NY
I would just run it straight into the wall to end it if there is no casing or trim. I hope that helps. I am not exactly which if I understood your question correctly. Best of luck.
Not sure I'd do it on an apartment... Are they going to compensate you for that?
@@hatcherbyron I own it.
@@davidhartenstein3243 that makes more sense lol
What was the thickness of your MDF?
Great job!! How did you handle your “outside” corners?
What thickness mdf did you use?
what should be the nail size ? thanks in advance
I used 18g finishing nails for this project. Best of luck

Bobby, it looks like I am about to acquire a place that has pretty gross semi circle style old yellow paint. Did you ship lap cover up technique work?

I'm going to paint, in between planks. check out Bruce Ulrich's video for another great look at this technique.

How'd you guys cap the corners where the shiplap meets?
Thanks for the reply, great video!
What did you use for baseboard trim?
Ashley Eisele I used 1x6 primed pine from Lowe’s. 👍🏻

Where is the first part with the DIY door trim?

Sorry I saw the post from another viewer after I asked the question...Thanks..
You can find something like this on the Stodoys website. Full step-by-step instructions right on your desk.
You talk too much! No need for all that explanation.
Well you have a mute button if you don’t want to listen. It’s a video explaining how to do stuff so you kinda need to talk.
