Nice job, It's interesting to watch someone else repair a lens you are very familiar with. I do things a little different than you but you did a great job.
Thank you very much. It means a lot coming from someone who has a lot more experience than me.
Thank you for your amazing support , my second 35-70mm f/2.8 lens arrived from Ebay , I successfully cleaned the lens and I can now refit the front element focus without any problem as I have had plenty of practice .
Unfortunately the rear of the lens is are two lenses that are sealed together , these lenses had coating distortion blotches at the side of the elements , these elements are cemented together so I couldn't clean in between ,the small blotches wasn't that bad & the lens worked perfectly with no picture quality loss , nevertheless I decided to sell that lens very cheap .
I think these elements can very carefully be separated by cutting through the cement & refitted with industrial tape ?.
Hi, I have never tried to separate that specific element as it is on a metal casing and have always managed to find a replacement. I don't think it is real doublet either. I need to take a look one day at that to figure a lasting solution. Best.
Liked and subscribed. I just used your method to clean mine, it worked very well, many thanks.
Hi, very glad the repair went smoothly. Don't forget to tell all your friends about the channel. Cheers.
Thanks, I've got also a copy with haze. With your video, I'm thinking of cleaning it myself!
Great, hope you manage without trouble, I think the video is explicit enough, but if you have questions, do not hesitate. Best.
This looks really helpful. I have managed to remove fungus from lenses before but always struggled and failed to remove haze. So I will give this a try using your technique and see how I get on. Thank you very much for posting this.
Hello, it's just like fungus, you need a bit more patience. Best way to say thanks is liking, subscribing and telling all your friends about the channel. Cheers.
@@diyextravaganza thanks I've already done that
Excellent video.
Few additions:
When unscrewing this element watch out for the element behind this one: not secured.
The front element of this unit can also be removed if the issue sits there.
This video was excellent as I did not know the rear element could be removed.
One other issue of this lens is with the unit 3 ( just behind the aperture)
This is a sealed construction unfortunately.
Have you ever taken apart unit 3?
Hello, thanks, no, I've never manage to open unit 3 cleanly.
Thanks for the video! Good work!
Thanks to you, don't forget to subscribe and tell all your friends about the channel.
Thank you for sharing , it is much appreciated .
I followed your procedure & cleaned my lens and it was a 100% success .
The only question I ask myself is during the disassembly of the internal 3 optical lens assembly the centre optical element unexpectedly fell out of the assembly , I didn't get a chance to see what way the element is supposed to be positioned ?, but the centre optical element is perfectly elliptical at both sides so I assume it's a bipolar optical element , after reassembling the lens it works perfectly so I assume that the centre optical element is fine ?.
Hi, you actually got lucky. I've had myself flipped the element and the results are interesting. Don't forget to tell your friends about the channel. Regards.
@@diyextravaganza Oh absolutely , I have shared your channel on Facebook & Whattapp . I bought another lens of the same type to restore , I correctly marked the front element assembly but it was still really tricky , for some reason the focus would snag at the 0.6 scale so I just kept slight adjustments on reassembly until I got it perfect , it's the most difficult part of the job .
@julianrobertson3303 yes, that's usually the part requiring the most patience and where many give up. I've bought several lenses where the last alignments are not done properly, don't give infinity and a sold cheap, great for honing your skills. 😊
@@diyextravaganza Thank you , it is very tricky aligning the focus thread connection , it's high precision & takes time to keep slightly readjusting carefully each step at a time, it took me 40 minutes to get it right, but it does fall into place eventually with lots of patience . I also opened the aperture blades to clean the optics behind , I used a flat apsc cleaning sensor swab & carefully wiped off a thin layer of discolouration from the optics surface , it was very delicate work careful not to touch any of the aperture blades , the lens is fine now thanks to your amazing video. The lens has crystal clear optics now , but it still ghosts on close up for some reason , but it's perfect on macro and all the other distant focal lengths , it's not the sharpest of lenses ,but it is a great lens nevertheless as it produces amazing focal images .
@julianrobertson3303 nice, you have won a very nice lens, and you have a second one coming, isn't that right? You'll be more effective on the second one, I can maybe do this lens blindfolded as I've done about 20 of them already. 😋
when you screwed the element back together, did you need to re-glue them together? if so, what did you use for glue? Love the videos, just subscribed.
Hi, I did not put glue after assembly as it was what created the haze originally. It is a well know flaw in this otherwise wonderful lens.
Very nice job...congrats! What you uses to disolve the old glue? Just Isoptopyl Alcohol is enougth? I have the same lens with the same problem and I will clean it like you done. Please let me know how you removed the old glue
Hi, isopropyl alcohol, 99.9% pure. That's all. Best.
What kind of rubber cone do you use instead of the spanner? What dimensions does it have and where can be get it from?
Hello, try these two links amzn.to/3mEcdco
amzn.to/3FtXfAK, regards.
On a very similar subject I was wondering if the Nikon 35-135 f/3.5-4.5 is the same cleaning process ?, the lens looks exactly the same as the 35-75 . f2.8 ?.
It should disassemble similarly, but the optical construction is for sure different. Best.
Hi Thanx for the great video that gives some confidence when buying this lens. Question: I have my sight on a lens that is clear at the moment. After all these years; Will it stay like that or will the haze stillcome at some point. Regards from the Netherlands
Hello, I bought a clear one a few years ago, but the haze came probably after two years. So, I'd say it is inevitable. What you really need to pay attention is if the small group (the third assembly from the front, or second from the back), has haze or separation, less common but happens nevertheless. That one is a sealed element that you cannot open without destructive means. Cheers.
That's amazing, I'm ready to try it. Any issues w/ working loose later? Are you redisolving old glue to reuse & it sets OK? Wil this haze come back in back eventually even if stored better in temp control ?
Hi thanks, no, I don't use glue again, this is what caused the haze to start with. Haven't had any feedback of later issues and I've repairing this for 5 years now. Cheers.
thanks!
You're welcome !
Great video but could you please help me. can't get the two screws on the front element to unscrew. They are very tight. Is that normal? How can I loosen them? Thank you!!!!
Hello, you mean the two on the side that do the guiding of the front element? Maybe they are glued, try put some isopropyl alcohol to soften the glue. Best.
@@diyextravaganza Yes, those two screws. I will try that. Thank you!!
@@Fred-q1x use also a screwdriver that perfectly fits the slot, else you'll degrade the screw head's condition.
@@diyextravaganza Thank you for that advice!!! That is exactly what I was looking at tonight. Need to upgrade my screwdrivers. Just had a cheap set and none of them were a good fit!
@@diyextravaganza Thank you! That worked.
Hi I have these 35-70 af2.8 D, and I used them in the past on a Nikon D70, D300, F70, and FM3a and worked great . Did not use them for quite few years now I tried them and noted that the focus ring is not working the full range from 0.6 to infinity, it’s working only from. 1m to 3m , at both end of the range is not touching the end of the range. Would you please advise what could be the issue and if this is repairable? I live in Texas USA
Hi, first thing I'd try would be to remove the bayonet (remove black part first) and remove the focusing gear and try to move by hand the focusing ring, just to understand where is blocking. It is repairable but hard to tell without having a look at the lens. Cheers.
Hi Man! I disassembly the lens as per your video, very nice and good help...but I tried to remove the haze from the same element like you but it continue on the lens surface after clean twice. It's normal or maybe need adittional works or products? By way Ibidentify small fungus on the lens near on bayonet...can you help me on this?
For the haze, you need to do many many times, it will go away eventually. For the fungus, can't you add a little video on your RUclips? Best
I'll do the vídeo and post here after

@@fabiosales2985 Hi, I saw, for the haze, you'll need to insist on the cleaning, the next group is tricky because it is sealed and near impossible to open, I usually replace it altogether.
I have one with some balsam seperation in the rear complex lens. Is there any way to clean it to fix it ?
Thank you.
Hi, you mean the small one, that one it's near impossible to fix as it has a metal casing. I've tried but it takes an incredible amount of effort to open. Finally, I've settled to buying 35-70mm 2.8 in unrepairable condition and keep those elements for replacement. Cheers.
is there a way to fix the front glass becaues mine has scraches on it is it possible to fix it and where
Removing scratches usually involves repolishing, which will remove the coatings, so, you need to recoat. Since the lens is a common one, that will probably cost more than buying a "parts" lens. This is what I usually do, I buy copies beyond repair and recover the parts. I think I have one front element, I can sell it to you but it will depend more on where you live to see if adding the shipping price makes sense. Best
Con que producto exactamente lo limpias
Hablas de la bruma? Utilizo el Hama Htmc, creí mencionarlo en el vídeo. Saludos.
Hello.
I tried but I forgot to mark the position of the focus 3:11 and can´t turn the focus to infinitus... Must I do it by trial and error?
Hello, sadly yes. To gain time in such situations, I put some paper tape on the lens and mark each entry position, so I'm able to discard all the wrong solutions. It takes time and patience though. Cheers.
thanks a lot! @@diyextravaganza
I’m planning to do it. But there was glue on the internal element. How did you replace it.? What Kindle of glue?
I did not add new glue. I keep it as is, so if I need to come back I don't struggle and avoid risk of having the problem back. Cheers
@@diyextravaganza Thank you, I will do it👍
but that is in the front element, what about the back element?
There are two "back" elements. The one next to the bayonet is easily serviceable, the next one is a sealed element. Impossible to open without doing some damage. Cheers.
@@diyextravaganza Thanks.
My upper only element came loose not the whole lens group like yours. I think this method is very hit and miss. I did not have that much luck.
Yeah, that happens sometimes (I think I mention that on the video), just keep going. Cheers.
🤬🤬🤬🤬To the person who sold me a hazy lens on marketplace
No need to get angry, you can fix it now. Cheers.
@@diyextravaganza after watching your video I will now, because other videos shows 1 hour plus so I said forget about it.
