+Philip Campbell I don't believe so. You can sign into different apps with different Apple IDs, but you can't easily just hot switch from one to another.
+SupraWes No, the last generation was IR. It just had good range! I often didn't need to point it at the TV, but you will notice the black spot in the front is for the IR signal to pass through
Excellent review Andrew! This is the most complete one I've seen. I like how you've gone and shown all the little features and settings too. Even without the App store, you showed all the other goods really well!
Looking at selecting the audio mode, there were only three options: Surround Sound 5.1; Dolby Digital; and Stereo. There is no option for Surround Sound 7.1 ,Why? Is there a way to manipulate to recognize a Surround Sound 7.1 system. Not able to capture total utilization of connected sound system. Need your Help!
Can you offer a suggestion on the need for the upgraded ram version? ...also does it buffer/store personal pics for a slideshow w/out having a iTunes server running on the same network?
+Andy Gantt So it isn't more ram, it is actually more storage. That will be directly affected by how many apps you have stored on the device. So if you are one to download a lot of games, that will take up space. Pics will stream easily if you are using iCloud to store your photos. Then it will work flawlessly!
+R MCK Well the app store hasn't fully launched so it is hard to tell what content will be available. That said! There should be plenty you can do. Depends on how you watch TV. If you watch shows using netflix, hulu, showtime, or HBO those are all baked in and you should be set to do that, plus lots of free games and other apps. If you have your own content on a computer that you use to stream from, you can use Plex, or Simplex. I have a roundup here: www.maomagic.com/blog/upcoming-apps-for-the-new-apple-tv of some of the upcoming apps so take a look! There will be much more than the few I have but it is an idea!
Question: As the AppleTV downloads screensavers. Can they be edited? Once they're in your AppleTV can you delete ones you don't like, or ones your bored with.
+Charles Wagoner Not that I know of. it only can send signals to your TV. However, if you are able to program your TV remote at all to control other devices, that may work using IR
Excellent review, I thought you covered all the areas spot on and accurately. I wonder if the 4K is a software adjustment that Apple could add instead of a next gen model, as they had packed a lot of great features it would seem silly to purchase another next gen just for the 4K. Also I think the IOS integration could be more integrated with the IPhone or iPad etc.
+Lee Hayes Thanks so much! I appreciate it! I think there is a ton they can do with OS updates. Why not update the remote app on iPad/iPhone so you can use Siri to control the Apple TV without the included remote? Or just say it on your phone to control it without using an app at all! "Can you turn on my TV and show me the latest episode of Limitless?" I think they are counting on upgrading hardware since they have a lower price point. idk if it will be yearly, but they can probably get away with a every 2 year major upgrade cycle like the phones, with OS updates every year. I will be posting a new video this evening going through the app store and features if you are interested! Hope you subscribe!
+Sun deep Not by default and I don't think there are any third party either. Apple is not allowing its web view to run on the Apple TV's at this moment, though it could open up in the future
In an earlier answer about storage space your said you weren't worried yet. Aren't you concerned about the screensavers eating up all your space? At 200 megs each. That's going to eat up a lot more space and faster than apps will ever do. Hense my question below.
+Robert W. Anderson Im still doing well on storage. I think I will need a little bit more time to fully decide! I did pick up a second one, and once I again I went with the smaller storage option.
+Tommy BBQ Yes, there is a youtube video app on the Apple TV that can pull in your watch list from your phone, or you can Airplay as you did previously!
+Where We Eating Apple will need to open it up first. They said they will, but haven't yet. I think Simplex looks better than Plex so I guess I am more interested if they do it.
+Ryan J I have not seen a 4th gen jailbreak yet. I assume it will come soon. When you say how reliable is it, do you mean the jailbreak or the Apple TV in general? Ive found the TV itself is very stable. Ive yet to have something crash or the device to reboot.
+MNMonster I agree. that is pretty neat but it is pricy. I will see if there is interest and maybe I can do a review, but I feel I need the guitar controller to really do a proper review of the game.
Yes you can play the game without the guitar controller but it is I think 15 dollars to unlock all the songs? If you buy the guitar controller it comes with a code that unlocks all the songs as well!
Is a special stereo receiver needed to access Siri? I purchased the 4th Gen 64gig but I am not sure how to setup my Pioneer Stereo Receiver to work with Siri. Please advise.
+Gregory Eason what do you mean when you say "Work with Siri"? Siri won't interface with your receiver, other than to adjust volume. That is configurable in the settings
+valveman12 As far as developers offering them, WebKit, the framework that enables a browser to be built is not included in TvOS. That said, most believe this to be an inevitability that will be rectified come WWDC this summer. In the interim, you can mirror using an iPhone or iPad? I think it has been left out at the moment just because it is a first gen product.
Yes but why has Apple not include one. Why do people have to find ways to do this that is not already supported by Apple. Just does not make a lot of sense. BTW Thanks for the info.
+Andrew OHara Thanks you sir :) By the way your review was very nice and informative. It would be really nice if you can do a special video on netflix in Apple tv because I use that a lot. I'm actually confused between shield tv and apple tv. But I really liked the trackpad thing!
of course there is a netflix app. There is a whole app store full of thousands of apps. We even did a view review of the netflix app. ruclips.net/video/c-6xAvJEq_c/видео.html
+xXTukkiXx I sure this will come soon enough. It makes too much sense to say "Set my movie watching scene" or to just, automatically set the scene when a movie starts. It still is the HomeKit hub.
Why did you not include the loss of the optical audio connection in your list of bummers? I can no longer play mine through my cinema system. I now have to listen to my 30,000+ iTunes tracks through the crappy TV speakers.
+Malcolm Page While it is a bummer, it isn't a huge deal with me. My TV has an optical audio out so I just run that to my receiver. That said, you can also use something like this: goo.gl/pfPDkj Which will extract the audio from the HDMI!
+Andrew Ohara Thanks for that link, although that product isn't on sale here in the UK. But I found the Neet® HD Audio Converter/Extractor on Amazon UK which I hooked up this morning, and it works great!
i came from a boxee box which felt way more open. what i really miss most is the ability to just stream mkv and other file formats off from my NAS without any issues whatsoever. i really dont want to use apps like plex etc (which doesnt seem to work very well either). i just want it to work. screenmirroring with airplay form my iphone was cool tho
Ah.. yeah I have a Diskstation to stream video off of, and I use Plex and AirVideo HD both which support any format and work great. But it is a little more closed off
yea i think i saw an app for AirVideo on the market while browsing the store on the apple tv. it was like 5 euros to download. this really turns me off. making me pay for a service that should already be implemented within the software in the first place. i did some research about this whole plex thing and it just seems so cumbersome to use. also it just seems to convert videos while streaming which a nas-drive seems to have trouble with. its a shame that apple limits their products in such extreme ways that they do, cause otherwise they do make great devices and software
Ive had good success with Plex. Ive used it long before the Apple TV to stream to my devices and remotely while I am out of my house. All I did was install, and choose the folder I have my videos in and everything was there. I their version of DLNA streaming is just their iTunes streaming. I have a server set up for this included an automated process for adding metadata so this isn't too much a problem for me personally.
You need to work on your delivery. You alternate between slow and clear enunciation and a mush of too-fast half-swallowd words all crunched together. Your info is good but your voice speed and clarity needs a lot of work.
So you don't have the optical port anymore? This thing is useless for playing music. Good job apple. No wonder why the stock in plummeting. Whoever is developing these products should be fired.
Is Kodi gona be in Apple Store like google store?
+iqiy23 I have not heard any announcement yet!
Can I switch between apple accounts with the new Apple TV?
+Philip Campbell I don't believe so. You can sign into different apps with different Apple IDs, but you can't easily just hot switch from one to another.
I am pretty sure the last generation remote was Bluetooth as well, I regularly used it from under the covers not pointed anywhere near the ATV.
+SupraWes No, the last generation was IR. It just had good range! I often didn't need to point it at the TV, but you will notice the black spot in the front is for the IR signal to pass through
Looks like the Apple TV is in my future replacing my minimac controlling an ordinary TV. Thanks for the clear, concise, current review.
you got a sub for not ruining the packaging and wraping
Excellent review Andrew! This is the most complete one I've seen. I like how you've gone and shown all the little features and settings too. Even without the App store, you showed all the other goods really well!
+Erik Weimer Thanks! I also posted a few other videos, specifically one on the app store. Apple TV App Store - Hands On & Review
+Andrew OHara I saw, and I watched!
Looking at selecting the audio mode, there were only three options: Surround Sound 5.1; Dolby Digital; and Stereo. There is no option for Surround Sound 7.1 ,Why? do an update when the app store opens, cuz that's what's most interesting to me.
+portalplayer Will do! Just got the production version installed and will figure out what to film shortly.
Can you use the old power cord and HDMI cord from the previous Apple TV with the new one?
+BeachNative78 yup!
Is it worth buying for the free content with it. Basically I don't want to be spending a lot of money on subscriptions and buying apps etc.?
+R MCK Well the app store hasn't fully launched so it is hard to tell what content will be available. That said! There should be plenty you can do. Depends on how you watch TV. If you watch shows using netflix, hulu, showtime, or HBO those are all baked in and you should be set to do that, plus lots of free games and other apps. Question: As the AppleTV downloads screensavers. Can they be edited? Once they're in your AppleTV can you delete ones you don't like, or ones your bored with.
+Robert W. Anderson Nope! Not at this time unfortunately!
Can you control it via your TV remote since it now supports HDMI-CEC?
+Charles Wagoner Not that I know of. it only can send signals to your TV. However, if you are able to program your TV remote at all to control other devices, that may work using IR

does it have web browser or can we install ?
+Sun deep Not by default and I don't think there are any third party either. Apple is not allowing its web view to run on the Apple TV's at this moment, though it could open up in the future
Hello, does anyone know how to make purchased tv series to play continuously? I must be missing something on my Apple TV.
Great review, very comprehensive and superb enunciation. Thank you for sharing

question apple tv 4th generation will be available to get you-tube app
+Joaquin Becerra Yup!
I use my 3rd gen apple tv mostly for watching youtube video's from my iPhone, will I still be able to do this with the 4th gen apple tv?
+Tommy BBQ Yes, there is a youtube video app on the Apple TV that can pull in your watch list from your phone, or you can Airplay as you did previously!
Good review man!
+Jeff Coker Thank you my friend!
i just bought it and it was really cool!!!!!!!!
You should probably mention the missing hdmi cable we need to connect it.
Im waiting on Plex to say they will support the voice search api.
+Where We Eating Apple will need to open it up first. They said they will, but haven't yet. I think Simplex looks better than Plex so I guess I am more interested if they do it.
+Andrew OHara them too. i just can't get a set top without some form of integration with plex and voice search.
+Where We Eating It would be much appreciated. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
Have they jail broken the 4th apple tv yet ? how reliable is it vs android ?
+Ryan J I have not seen a 4th gen jailbreak yet. I assume it will come soon. When you say how reliable is it, do you mean the jailbreak or the Apple TV in general? Ive found the TV itself is very stable. Ive yet to have something crash or the device to reboot.
Are you interested in guitar hero for that? I think it's cool that a real consul game made it to Apple TV
Console
+MNMonster I agree. that is pretty neat but it is pricy. I will see if there is interest and maybe I can do a review, but I feel I need the guitar controller to really do a proper review of the game.

can i go on pages like coke and popcorn from this apple tv?
+John Espinoza No browser.. so if you access them from the web, not right now
Why does apply TV still not have a browser?
+valveman12 As far as developers offering them, WebKit, the framework that enables a browser to be built is not included in TvOS. Will the trackpad work for Netflix? Can I seek using the trackpad for Netflix? Also will the "what did he say" thing work for Netflix?
+jones george Yessir!
+Andrew OHara Thanks you sir :) By the way your review was very nice and informative. It would be really nice if you can do a special video on netflix in Apple tv because I use that a lot. I'm actually confused between shield tv and apple tv. But I really liked the trackpad thing!
I'll see what I can do! I have a bit of backlog on content right now!
+Andrew OHara Thanks Andrew:)
NO NETFLIX APP?
of course there is a netflix app. There is a whole app store full of thousands of apps. We even did a view review of the netflix app. ruclips.net/video/c-6xAvJEq_c/видео.html
Wtf no siri homekit support ? I ordered one but was not aware of that ... What a bummer
+xXTukkiXx I sure this will come soon enough. It makes too much sense to say "Set my movie watching scene" or to just, automatically set the scene when a movie starts. It still is the HomeKit hub.
600GB each?! Maybe MB :)
Can you use Siri on your phone through the tv while it's on
Nope, unfortunately
inresting very very very very interesting
+George F Thanks!
nice video to watch
I wish that anyone would like to answer my question
+LordAziz I answered. Just took me a bit to answer everyone.

Wait can't I download movies or TV Shows ?
+LordAziz Some may store some media offline, but not much. Not right now.
I don't want to have to charge my remote
bought one today.
was really surprised with how limited this piece of shit is. returning it tomorrow
+Andy B thats too bad! What were you limited by? just wondering!
i came from a boxee box which felt way more open.
what i really miss most is the ability to just stream mkv and other file formats off from my NAS without any issues whatsoever.
i really dont want to use apps like plex etc (which doesnt seem to work very well either).
i just want it to work.
screenmirroring with airplay form my iphone was cool tho

Chris Pratt fanboy. Haha jk great review.

He sounds great.......stfu
So you don't have the optical port anymore? This thing is useless for playing music. Good job apple. No wonder why the stock in plummeting. Whoever is developing these products should be fired.
+EHTZ1975 why? HDMI actually passes higher definition audio than optical can. There isn't as much a need for optical as there was in the past.
