Seems to me to be able to find a good amount of small gold amongst all those small pebbles, wouldn't you need a small dredge with a little bit of a sluice run?

Don't sell your GMT that short, Jason. They're no Gold Bug but'll still hit on all but the finest bits at (shallow) depth in the wild. Scrub those cracks! Use a coil cover or epoxy; bedrock / over-burden will chew a coil open before ya break for lunch!

Packed gravels hide gold. Somebody got there before you did. They cleaned out what the high water left behind.
