  • This is probably the earliest known footage of a live gospel program - it was filmed at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York City in 1959. The Swanee Quintet of Augusta GA sing their latest release "New Walk", led by Rev Ruben Willingham and Johnny Jones with (from left to right) James "Big Red" Anderson, Rufus Washington, Charlie Barnwell and William Crawford (guitar).
    Another performance from this program by The Imperial Gospel Singers is here - • Imperial Gospel Singer...

    Yes yes yes!!! THIS PERFORMANCE REMINDS ME OF THE NON-GOSPEL GROUPS I SAW AS A KID (early 1960s).
    R&B and gospel go hand in hand musically.

    Would love to see clips if they turn up by Archie Brownlee and the five blind boys or RH Harris and the soul stirrers or the gospel consolaters amongst hundreds of others

      We all live in hope, I guess. There *ought* be film of the Swan Silvertones at Newport in 1959, for example.

    So that means it's a lot more footage from the early 50's mid and late 50's, 60's, 70's etc because the cameras were always rolling 📽️🎥

      The Dixie Hummingbirds and Five Blind Boys of MS were also on this particular program - let's hope more vintage live gospel film turns up in the future.

    Fantastic footage. I'm thinking there's some staging going on with the audience shots...the lighting and everything is just too perfect for it to be random. Anyone...?

    • @DeepGospelSound
      @DeepGospelSound  5 лет назад +2

      My guess is that it was a low budget production (two cameras?) so before or after the musical performances, the director filmed some footage with audience members to edit into the finished version.
