If you learn more of his lore you understand this dude is not an asshole. I will not say he is a good guy but not a bad guy either. In fact he was a good guy before. Patches his for me the npc the most interesting when you try to understand him.
Exactly, when he is Lapp you can understand more of what he naturally is like before whatever happened to him when he lost his memory, and when you restore it instead of kicking you into a trap you get kicked into where you need to go

Because greedy people will always exist, and his purpose is to punish them. But in The Ringed City, the world is ending. Patches forgot who he is. You help him figure it out, and what does he do? Push you off a ledge. But then you realise that's where you needed to go. Patches...helped you. And for one last goodbye, he helps you beat Halflight. Patches isn't bad, but he isnt good either. Hes neutral. He respects greirat because he steals for others. I really hate people who hate patches just because he pushes you off ledges ONCE every game hes in. Some people againts patches say how he says that hes gonna clean your corpse when were dead, but dont we do that all the time too. I love Patches, and I hope he somehow returns in Elden Ring

I have come to repent, in my first ds3 playthrough I didn't know how NPC's worked, so when greiat dissapeared after I agreed to help him I didn't think anything of it, thought he'd died or something... Then i explored the area in firelink only to see one of those little thrall buggers that had killed me so many times hiding by a stone box... Muscle memory kicked in and then I realised it wasn't I thrall... With no idea how to de-agro him I killed him --- long story short I now pay for my sins by only using the broken sword with no armour until I free him every NG+ cycle or replay

Patches turns the bridge on you to fall into skeleton pits. Deliberately sets loot that he got off of corpses rummaging though dead boddies so he can kick you and do the same to you so he can get your loot, he scams you all the time by selling items at 5 times the price( he got those items off the people he scammed into their deaths). He steals the armor of one of the nicest npcs and pushes him down the well effectively killing him by starving him to death, he throws you to the giants, he tries to attack you and kill you multiple times... Like his wretchedness doesn't end. Where is the part that he steels out of necessity and punishes greed?? He is actually trash. And the list continues in Elden ring. You either kill him immediately the first time you see him in any souls games or you didn't play all the souls game and just base him off of Ds3
