I never thought I would be watching a channel like this, but here I am and understanding this stuff actually has the potential to meaningfully impact my quality of life. This is accessible, scientifically rigorous and wonderfully presented. Could someone please help answer where Magnesium fits into all of this and what might be a good way to maximise its penetration transdermally?

Love your videos! So the penetrates helps with plant oils as well or just esthers? I’m formulating a body butter to help fade stretch marks, I want the benefits of the plant oils as deep into the layers of the epidermis as possible, so I would use a penetrating ingredient to make sure the effects get deeper into the epidermis??

    • @theinstituteofpersonalcare6401

    Great video as usual!
I wonder if there are lipid penetration enhancers that work better than others (eg for anhydrous systems)?
I have often read that fatty acid esters such as Dermofeel Sensolv or the Cetiol range (Cetiol CC, Cetiol Sensoft, etc.) contribute to better penetration of the active ingredients while they remain on the surface of the skin like many fatty acids. But their molecular size tend to be smaller than fatty acids and triglycerides.
I have never considered the polarity of lipid raw materials in my formulas but rather their other physical properties (molecular weights, viscosity, etc.) and the efficacy data provided by the suppliers.
I have also often heard that non-polar lipids (especially those of mineral origin) do not penetrate the skin at all, unlike certain lipid raw materials of vegetable origin, and more particularly the more biomimetic ones such as phospholipids, phytosterols, etc. But maybe they aren't better penetration enhancers than non-polar ones?
Anyway, is it even useful to consider the polarity of lipid raw materials?
Do you have more information or scientific studies?

      Hi Shalom,
Thanks for watching and for your interest! Please be sure to subscribe to never miss the latest releases.
These enhancers weren’t studied on hair - in general if the cuticle is lifted you’ll get enhanced penetration. Damaged hair the cuticle is lifted! Also molecular weight matters - small molecular weight hydrolysed proteins, for example, can get into damaged hair cuticles for the best results.
      Happy Formulating!

Thanks for watching! Certain fatty acids from some plant oils have been found to have good penetration, but the impact this has for multi-ingredient personal care is unknown and limited research to prove or disprove this has been conducted. You will find this study interesting reading, but a lot more needs to be done before a definitive list can be provided, and please note it would also rely a lot on what else is in the formula, application, and it should also be remembered that it is not the whole oil that penetrates, and only certain fatty acid portions: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6151382/ In other words, more work needs to be done to determine this properly.
