    Brilliant script, written and directed by Bryan Forbes, who also wrote the novel. Bryan Forbes was an English film director, screenwriter, film producer, actor and novelist described as a "Renaissance man" and "one of the most important figures in the British film industry". Forbes also wrote and directed Kim Stanley and Richard Attenborough in "Seance on a Wet Afternoon", George Segal in "King Rat", Alan Bates and Hayley Mills in "Whistle Down the Wind." He was a prolific writer and producer, who was the first head of EMI Films, the British Government's attempt to revive the failing film industry. All his films feature great classic dramatic writing, without the use of special effects or explicit sexual or violent content. Good actors flocked to work for him.

This and others like it: Quiller Memorandum, Tinker Tailor, Smileys People, Spy Who Came in From The Cold, Ipcress Files, Funeral In Berlin, Billion Dollar Brain are tops in their Genre. Have to say favorite is Burton in Spy Who Came In From The Cold. The grainy black and white nastiness of in your face close ups of Burton and his cynical/nasty delivery of his lines is worth the watch. Thanks for posting this great movie.

Obviously this upload is a very abridged version of the original. Not having watched the original version, I was able to absorb and enjoy what was presented. However, I did feel that some continuity and, therefore, explanation as to how certain situations arose, was lacking. Oh well, it is free to view and beggars can't be choosers. Little makes sense for the whole first hour, making this a waste of time. I'm 1/2 way through watching it for the 2nd time in a out 2 years, and so far it's no better than the 1st time I saw it. Some films do improve on 2nd watching, but not this one. Instead of 2 hours, it should have been just 1 hour. I'm quitting half way through. Big names do not necessarily mean that the movie will be good. Finney does his best, but the terrible, slow moving plot full of holes is a disaster. It might be a good book, but I do not recommend this movie.

    As a therapist whose worked in many nursing homes here in NJ/PA...I can say, even I. 1989, the idea that a facility would allow the door to be closed to patients rooms is nonsense. The general idea besides observations by the staff, is safety.
    Fall are prevented by judging posture and alertness while the pt is seated.

    Surprisingly well-executed for what seems a derivative of the several Le Carre novels and movies. It hardly veers from the template Le Carre created, and yet still very compelling with a first-rate cast. As noted, there are some gaps as if it had been abridged, and yet that was actually a hallmark of the genre to begin with: nothing spoon-fed to the viewer in terms of understanding the relationships and plot.

I learned privilege meant you didn't expect consequences for bad behavior. Believe me, my parents and grandparents, as they had learned from theirs, expected you to behave properly to both family, friends and strangers or there were consequences. The kids in my family learn that lesson now. I still obey the rules of courtesy as a sign of respect for others. However, if you disrespect someone who believes in those rules the consequences are entirely on you. The kids live in a crappy neighborhood without a cricket pitch because that's all ther parents can afford on their wages. Perhaps they put their money towards food and education before housing. The kids have to play where they can. Learn some respect.

    That inevitable phrase ‘ Coming in out of the cold’ sets the scene for the entire genre of Cold War spy movies, when even if the hero survives the final scene, it leaves you wondering, ‘ For how long?’ Because of the role Richard Burton immortalised in ‘ The spy who came in from the cold’.

    Wow... I drifted off and awoke to Lemas and "the Spy Who Came In from the Cold"

  • @freemarketjoe9869
    @freemarketjoe9869 Год назад +4

    Like the spies it portrays, films like this always fly under the radar and are soon forgotten. The problem with the spy game, post WW2, is there are so many pots boiling over on the stove, trying to save one knocks another one over. The final solution both sides came up with...do nothing....let them all boil over and see what happens. To save one pot might knock several more pots (operations) over. Safer to just watch and see what happens. Then, next thing you know, it's standard procedure...then it's policy. This certainly sums up Afghanistan before, during and after we exited it! No mention in the liberal Democratic press about the fate of all those in that country who supported us until President Biden suddenly packed up, leaving a billion dollars in military equipment there, and abandoned our allies to Isis. Total blackout in the supposedly honest, upstanding liberal media about the fate of our ex allies we abandoned.

    • @marbleman52
      @marbleman52 Год назад

      @freemarketjoe9869....You are right on target about how Biden betrayed the American civilians and the Afghanistan civilians who had been helping The U.S. I cannot imagine the horror and brutality that the left behind Afghan civilians had to face from Isis. I think this action is only a step away from Biden being a traitor to America and to Afghanistan.
      And talk about being a traitor to America is how most of the MSM has been the propaganda arm of the Socialist Democrats, and as we are learning more & more about on an almost daily basis now...the DOJ and the FBI have been protecting and covering up for the Democrats and particularly the Biden Cartel making millions from China.

    Great from Bryan Forbes.
    Missed it either on television or released on the big screen.
    Like Richard Attenborough, Forbes started out in supprting rôles and as a director aftetwards with 'King Rat' also starring G. Segal and 'Whistle Down the Wind' with Hayley Mills and Alan Bates among his best.
    Was 'The Pumpkin Eater' also his? Saw it much too long ago.

      Looked it up: Jack Clayton helmed 'The Pumpkin Eater'.
      'The Whisperers' and 'The L-Shaped Room' were also notable movies from director Forbes.

    I am seeking to learn the name of a British spy movie, where the spy used Syntax explosives; he threatened to blow up a school and used syntax in a car bombing that was set off by another vehicle trying to park on a crowded street by intentionally bumping into this vehicle. He killed or other spies were killed on a train. the movie was made in the 1970"s or 80:s. i saw this movie as a veteran in 1988

    I usually like to pop in and make my comment on the first half of the movie I see this organization very strong no it's extremely strong enough to find a witness that said he looks like the Prince's murder
    This corporation can hide anyone on this earth and with that said they are so sincere to one another no one will ever leak out any information
    if it were a book I was reading I wouldn't put it down or turn the edge of the pages for a pause mark.
    Totally awesome story i
    Am enjoying it quite a bit and even more with no interruption with that said I'll be back for the final comment at the end on with the movie Tata for now 🙋🏽

    I used to fondly remember one particular line from this film [- in this version just after1:03:44] :
    “Listen. You're a sexy lady but don't think you can just smile, flash your tits, and I'm going to roll over and beg.”
    And this time another [I suppose ironically-written] line jumped out, at 1:22:32, from a Soviet controller: "They're so stupid, these birds. Born in captivity but never get used to it."
    Quite a clever film. In the tradition of the genre, the reader/viewer has to work things out for themselves a bit and not miss any of the clues. All high-quality actors, famous and tremendously well-respected in their time, even in the smaller parts. Wonderful final quarter-hour - scenes for actors to relish.
    Recent events prompt me to wonder if there is any parallel here with the career of a certain Boris J...? [I hope that's not a spoiler for anyone.]
    Glad I decided to watch it for a second time, some years after the first.
    Thanks.

    Between the arrival of Gorbachev in 1985 and the second election of V.V. Putin in 2011, there was a window of time, of which this film was a very early occupant, where the equivalence of the American Exceptionalism and the Russian self-image as the last best hope of Christendom, allowed the West to depict Russians as honorable, intelligent, and humane.
