    Helene's voicing is unbelievable, especially in the postlude! Amazing performance by two incredible musicians.

    • @seanmarshall7529
      @seanmarshall7529 4 года назад

      I don't buy Helene... the accompaniment is not so musically taxing that she should feel necessary to feel the music so extravertedly.. He's a genius..

      @@seanmarshall7529 that makes no sense. so you want her to just dont feel it and just play it coldly? i really loved her playing and the voicing in the postlude just added to the whole thing

      @@Jaguar_man2004 I'm sorry, i don't remember the piece. It's a romantic piece, Dichter Lieder is so very much indeed. I'm just waiting form the top of my head... Romantic but not Vivaldian baroque where ad libitum west expected! The German romantics expected their music to be played as written... Does that explain anything? Thanks for your comment.

    The great thing about both the Schumann and Schubert Lieder is that they are truly pieces for voice and piano, and both are equally important. The piano is not just accompaniment as is obvious in this masterful performance.

    Just recently been discovering Grimaud's work as an accompanist. Amazing. Most pianist solists are not capable of working so well with singers. And for the rest, I'm stumped. I cannot find a single thing to criticize in Quasthoff's interpretation or performance. I mean, nothing. Cannot even thing of how this piece might be done differently in any way that would be desirable. Wow.

    Hör' ich das Liedchen klingen,
    Das einst die Liebste sang,
    So will mir die Brust zerspringen
    Von wildem Schmerzendrang.
    Es treibt mich ein dunkles Sehnen
    Hinauf zur Waldeshöh',
    Dort löst sich auf in Tränen
    Mein übergrosses Weh.
    Quando eu oiço a canção
    Que outrora a minha amada cantou,
    Eu sinto que o meu coração se rompe
    De selvagem e dolorosa pressão.
    Impele-me uma confusa saudade
    Lá para cima para as alturas do bosque,
    E aí se dissolve em lágrimas
    A minha enorme dor.

    Quand j’entends cet air qu’autrefois
    Chantait sa bouche purpurine,
    Je tremble, et mon cœur aux abois
    S’agite à briser ma poitrine.
    Vers l’âpre cime des forêts
    Je cours, poussé par ma détresse;
    Là, j’exhale en des pleurs secrets
    L’immense chagrin qui m’oppresse.
    10.« Hör’ ich das Liedchen klingen » (Quand j’entends cet air qu’autrefois)
    Le poète se souvient avec nostalgie d’un air lié à sa bien-aimée. Son chant se mêle aux réminiscences musicales amoureuses.
    Hör’ ich das Liedchen klingen,
    Das einst die Liebste sang,
    [So will mir die Brust] zerspringen
    [Vor] wildem [Schmerzendrang.]
    [Es treibt mich] ein dunkles Sehnen
    Hinauf zur Waldeshöh’,
    Dort löst sich auf in Tränen
    Mein übergroßes Weh’.

    When I hear the little song
    That my love once sang,
    My heart almost bursts
    With the wild rush of pain.
    A dark longing drives me
    Out to the wooded heights,
    Where my overwhelming grief
    Dissolves in tears.

    Helene's downbeats are just not in sync with Thomas. Very disturbing... The tempo is too slow, making each note in Helene's part sound like a separate funeral. As a soloist, she does a fine job, but not here I'm afraid. She needs to do a better job of subordinating her role to the singer's.

    • @jsphotos
      @jsphotos 7 лет назад +1

      Oh, PLEASE! I have heard this song cycle dozens of times. You may not think Grimaud did justice, but please let us see your performance. Until then, shut your pie hole!

    • @JPizzle1490
      @JPizzle1490 7 лет назад +2

      Oh please is right, this is live music, not some heavily edited studio recording. Grimaud is a true rubato artist and, no, not every single one of her downbeats line up, but it's hardly "very disturbing" because the gesture is appropriate. I'm sure the tempo was not dictated by Grimaud, but agreed upon by the two of them in rehearsal and if you think the pianist should subordinate to the singer in romantic lieder I don't think you understand the genre.
