  • Very welcome to this brand new cab ride, where indeed, almost everything is new! The company, the operations, the routes - I promise this one is packed with a lot of interesting operations and great views onto the Swiss landscape! railCare is a 100% subsidiary of Coop, one of Switzerlands biggest retailers. They operate their own fleet of rolling stock, trucks and containers and achieve an impressive goal: Efficient and cost-effective transport of goods, including frozen and fresh food, from door to door. It does not even require a crane or any other specialized infrastructure. If a truck can park next to the train on any siding, it can then load and unload containers from and onto the wagons with its own built in "ContainerMover". Many sidings are not electrified, which is no hurdle: The Siemens Vectron features a built-in diesel engine and can operate fully autonomous, even with a heavy train on the hook. Of course, this is only used for operating in sidings. Everything else is done with electric power, therefore quiet, powerful and environmentally friendly. railCare are not the only ones combining all these technologies, but the only ones doing it for a single retailer. Other customers also use their services, however most work is done for the retailer Coop.
    We've started our day by travelling to Gwatt on a normal passenger train and bus. The locomotive arrived there in the morning, pulling the wagons you see at the start of the video. First, we take the locomotive empty to Bern Niederbottigen, where our train waits for us. It consists of 12 wagons that have been unloaded at the branch before and need to go back into the cycle. It is our task to pull them to the hub Wangen bei Olten, one of railCares biggest hubs. The wagons are then either unloaded, crossloaded or pulled further by another train. Last but not least, you'll get to see A LOT of brand new routes that we've never seen before. Sit back and enjoy the beautiful trip!
    Locomotive: Rem 476 (Siemens Vectron)
    More information about the train and the trip is displayed in the video!

    While I do like the SBB Railway map, OpenRailwayMap is especially helpful because it shows all the lines with great detail. When you show station names, it helps me find my place on the map.

    I love watching your train rides. Switzerland is such a beautiful country and I really enjoy seeing it from inside the train cabs. It is just too bad, however, that so much of the beauty is spoiled by all the graffitti spread all over the walls and buildings along the way. It mars everything.

    @Railway Emotions, what a wonderful video. Swiss efficiency in full view around 7:50 when it goes next to another cargo train by changing tracks so gracefully. One question - who controls/directs on which track different trains should pass? Is it local to each station on centrally co-ordinated? I find track changes from 5:30-8:00 to be very fascinating. Thanks a lot for yet another great video.

      @Parallax Thank you so much for such a detailed explanation, including the Zurich airport trivia. I can see that how complex the systems are and how much of thought has gone in for smooth operation. For visitors (and admirers of everything Swiss) like me, everything looks so smooth and simple. Hats off. (Nice to see reference to Dubendorf, where I lived for a couple of months long time ago).

    • @RailwayEmotions
      @RailwayEmotions  2 года назад +5

      @Parallax very well explained, BUT everything you said is SBB specific. Don't forget there are more operation centers, for example BLS Spiez, where "our" controllers for the first part of the video are working from. There are some others like SOB, SZU and don't forget about all the narrow gauge operators.

      This is the terminus for this train, the wagons are then used further in the distribution system. Either just unloaded and loaded, maybe a new train is being coupled together... We drivers are not informed about what happens next and to be honest it does not matter for our task ;-)

      I publish the number for our specific train in each cargo video at the start. Theoretically there is no speed limit for cargo, practically it's mostly between 100 and 120.

    Judging by the graffiti around Bern there must be many people devoted to a non working lifestyle. Great shame such a beautiful country is not immune from invasion.

    To gospodarność i oszczędność wymusza dyscyplinę i stąd te trakcje jedno torowe i mijanki na stacjach. nie bez znaczenia jest też linia energetyczna rozpięta nad torami.
