Tesla Dashcam Not Recognized in the Glovebox - Easy Fix - All New Late 2020 2021 2022 Tesla S 3 X Y

- It turns out my MY I picked up in late December 2020 already had a Tesla USB Drive in the glovebox. I installed an external hard drive in the center console but kept receiving an alert that indicates “Dashcam USB drive not plugged into glovebox. Sentry mode will consume additional power”. When plugged into the glovebox, the USB port does not recognize either the new external nor the Tesla USB drive that came with the vehicle. Watch the video for the fix. I hope this helps others who experience similar issues.

Dude, thank you! Just got a 2023 M3LR and couldn't get the factory Tesla USB drive or the Tesla SSD to work, despite multiple unplug/replugs, reformats (both PC and in-vehicle), etc. I even did a car computer reboot, but with the drive still connected, and that didn't work either. But, after unplugging the drive and then rebooting, I was then able to start saving footage.
Helped tremendously I use a 256g samsung endurance sd card with a card reader & your tip worked I tried unplugging the sd card & resetting & it didnt work then i unplugged the reader & the card together & then restarting & that worked. Thanx

Rick, thanks for the video. I tried what you suggest on my new 2021 Tesla S (LR) but it did not work. I am using the USB provided by Tesla in the glove compartment. I can see the two icons under “control “ but not on the navigational maps? Any suggestions please?

@@Capchilly1990 yes I bought a new Samsung T7 touch 512 and it works no issues. I stuck it in the glovebox, clicked format and boom, No triangle issues, no warnings just works. Im guessing there is something in the 2021 cars which just does not like the T5. T5 is now on the Xbox :)
I thought this might solve the red x problem in my 2020 Model Y (purchased Sept 2020), but it turns out there is no usb port in the glove box in my car, and the car did not come with a usb drive. I've just been using a usb drive I bought plugged into the usb-a port next to the usb-c port in the center console. I have tried reformatting it then removing it and replacing it, as well as rebooting w/o the drive inserted, but to no avail. Any thoughts?
Update - I think I figured it out! Needed to remove, reboot, replace, and then reformat rather than reformatting first.
When I wake the vehicle from sleep, I’ve got to replug the drive or I don’t see a dashcam icon. When I do replug the drive, the dashcam icon appears and I can save and view footage however the error message is on staying ‘usb drive not plugged in’

Does this factory reset the whole vehicle or is this just a hard power on power off?
It will not erase all of your settings
