      I would def recommend a Samsung Bar flash drive over this one as Samsung is known for creating industry leading standards and their high quality products in the storage department. Also, their 128gb model have reads of 300mb/s with a full metal casing for a premium feel and quicker heat dissipation.

      @@matthewwalker5265 Sounds like solid option. Is this the one you are talking about? amzn.to/2PftFXl I just wish it had the smartphone connection for instant viewing. What do you think?

      @@ThatTeslaChannel Yeh that's the one. But you're right, it doesnt come with the adapter to connect with you're phone on the go although I'm sure you could buy one separately. I just figured that in the long run, this one would probably last longer with it having a higher read/write capability and if you ever need to transfer the files, it would be a breeze. Just figured I'd throw it in there :)

    I have the MicroSD card and yes, it does get warm, but not hot. One key note that if you go MicroSD, get the ones labeled "endurance" as they are designed for dashcams. With all the write and rewrite that happens on the drive, a standard USB can wear out and cause errors on the recordings which you def do not want. MicroSD endurance has a more durability and write and rewrite will work out better.

    Thanks!
    imho, High Endurance, Pro Endurance or Max Endurance MicroSD cards -- with a card reader USB drive -- may be the best way to go for longevity.

    SD and USB drives/flash all have the same problem and that is write cycles, so best bet is to use a USB SSD, it's built for massive rewrites.

    Good review... except you mention the car over write the footage when it is full (loop recording). As far as I know it doesn’t! When the flash drive is full, it will stop recording, and you need to delete files or reformat in order to get it going again.

    I got the PNY Duo 128gb for iphone and tesla model 3 won't recognize. I've formatted on Mac as MS-DOS(Fat), and on pc with several FAT32 formatters including RMprepUSB and guiformat. Each time I plug the drive into the Tesla I get an error that the car can't recognize the format. The drive works on the Mac, PC and my iPhone. Any suggestions? Picked my 2020 Model Y up from the Tesla service center today and they are useless! I will never buy another Tesla! My car was serviced for this Dash CAM / USB issue three times and the problem has come back hours after picking my car up today. No one to call when you have issues like this. All I can do is schedule service 6 weeks from now and they will still not fix it! I am tiered of Tesla! I love the car but its not worth keeping with the poor service that hey offer.

    What specifically makes heat a bad thing? I'm not planning on compromising space and asthetic without a good reason

    • @ThatTeslaChannel
      @ThatTeslaChannel  4 года назад +2

      Great question! The short answer is safety. I had a small fire start in a previous vehicle accessory port due to heat (Volkswagen Jetta). All it takes is the device to get too hot and the wrong material touching it. I may be overly safe about this now because of this experience, but either way I recommend playing it on the safe side. The area where the USB's plug into is plenty big for a full size USB and it is far out of sight (also scary that since it's out of sight, you will smell the fire before you see it). I hope that helps with some insight!

    I‘ve been using a similar one made by SanDisk but it only last for about 2 month. Now my car could not recognize the SD-usb no matter how i reinstall it. People said SSD might be an ultimate solution but i don't know if it's an overkilling.

  • @ilmostro16
    @ilmostro16 4 года назад +1

    What about the write speed of these recommendations? I really like that PNY because I wish I could just immediately watch any Sentry video if I feel suspicious (really wish Tesla would just add a Sentry mode player into the next software update already!) but recently it seems that write speed has become critical. After a recent update, I can no longer use the USB I had as a dash-cam because I get the message that my USB can’t sustain 4mb/s or something like that. I started researching and it seems every common USB can write faster, but apparently not consistently faster. So the issue is consistent write speed performance even as the drive starts to get closer to full where it seems drive write speeds slow down. Any idea if that PNY can be used for dash-cam recording? I think the constant daily overwriting dash-cam recording is a great feature in case of a crash and you need to prove its the other drivers fault etc.

      That's so when you take it out to go look at the footage, you don't have a TON of clips to sort through. I actually prefer to have more clips and more storage because the USB will last longer with more storage and you will have more clips to see to make sure you have the video that you actually need (and it didn't get overwritten already).

      It's a fire hazard. I had a fire in my last car from the 12v plug getting too hot. The reason it's so important in the Tesla is because the USB plug is hidden out of sight so you will not see the fire if one starts.
