I feel like this video perfectly encapsulates how I feel trying out a product at every tradeshow with a sales rep really close to my left shoulder and a hint of nervousness and urgency to touch anything lmao
One thing BM don't state in their quick start guide about the panel is that if you press down on a black knob at the top of the panel after changing that knob value, you reset that control to it's default value. Fantastic!
Panel looks really cool, but I'm definetly concerned that it doesn't support DCTLs. I was so sure that one of the graphics of the panel on the NAB stream showed it had an FX button, that could have presumably worked for DCTLs, but seems like it didn't end up on the final product. Once the manual drops I'm definetly gonna see if a shift key combination could work with DCTLs in some shape or form, that would definetly make it competetive against the mini panel
Very cool! Thx, Darren. I wasn't able to go to NAB this year, so you're my eyes and ears. LOL. Also, I need to travel and work on the road so this will be potentially be something I carry with me. Like you, I'd put my scopes on the iPad in front of me in the slot. Let me know if you find that it holds it well. Thanks again.
Ok so I finally have my hands on one. Totally new to this entire panel thing. So what is the workflow to bring all your footage into the timeline and color grade it all first or ? Normally I just color grade as I add clips but doesn't make sense with this in front of you now. Second the fact those knobs have no illumination and back lighting makes zero sense. Everything else does for low light working yet I have no idea what knobs are for until I memorize them all I guess? Do people trim them first and then grade them all or just stage the clips they know they are using into the timeline and start using this panel to grade them all?
Nice! Yes place for pen and paper haha I like the idea of the scopes too. Looking fwd to Blackmagic coming to Cinegear but I can’t wait that long for the panel haha
panel looks amazing...you could use that slot to put a couple of rounds of toast in if not using an iPad. Now we need to watch Mr Alex Techs review to see you in background !! Look forward to you full review, thanks for sharing as always
Thanks for this - looks like a useful bit of kit. I ordered mine over the weekend and already fed back to BM that I wanted to use an iPad to add functionality to the Mac's software rather than operate as a standalone. I was thinking more in line of mimicking the Mini's screens/controls (ie a bit like the Tangent Element-VS app), but bringing up scopes makes total sense and can already be done fairly easily - though it would be good for Resolve to offer more Omniscope-like options for larger iPad screens. I look forward to a video seeing you properly putting such a setup through its paces if you have time. Meantime, I look forward to any other NAB finds you share. Thanks again for such a great YT channel.
Cue Omniscope waking up and realising they should be on iPad ;) The extended controls seem to be the main upgrade from the gen1 micro panel, though it seemed like the rep wasn't totally aware of the new capabilities on offer.. but no RGB/ALL/LEVEL reset keys per wheel?! What's the thinking there?? I'm also wondering will they be thinking about redesigned mini and advanced panels too with that new wheel design and key functionality?
well, they came close to your April 1st concept video I guess 😀😀.. They are on the right track, I assume there will be an update on Mini and full console models with new style balls and wheels and key function updates that is needed to match new resolve updates and feature. Hopefully soon, a slightly compact size Mini panel would be amazing
Also, the knobs don’t seem to be backlit.. that has already been a problem with the other panels when working in complete darkness, sad they didn’t pull that out for this newer model
This mini Panel is quite suitable for home studio and a person whose desk at home or office isn't big enough 😌 but it seems doesn't have included with Studio version according to BMD official web.
Please suggest the Black Magic Team to make this fantastic Micro Panel compatible with the edit and cut page so we can use it just like the speed editor. It would be the most fantastic thing on their lineup.
Nice insight, Darren. I'll definitely get it, too bad the bottom edge isn't rounded upwards. I also think the balls and rings have no inertia. I don't know if other colorists like inertia, but I do. What's your opinion?
Hi Darren, great vid. Quick one. I struggle to grade clip by clip as it’s very time consuming for the daily content I post. I don’t like using Luts and was just wondering if there’s a smart way to grade clips at once. I’ve tried adding to groups, individually correcting exposure, temp, wb etc and creating a look with a group but maybe my poor filming hinders a consistent look. Is there a way you would grade when time is of the essence?
interesting... I looked on their website yesterday and pretty sure had a banner saying included with panel as I thought that was a good deal, but today not showing...maybe they are still working it out but wish had taken a screen shot !!
This was REALLY needed for on set work. Lots of smaller sets ran with the Tangent Ripple but those always felt a bit meh. Good for the price. But if you are working professionally as a DIT, you can afford that 500 price point no problem versus the 350 of the tanget.
I 've been saying today that it would be cool if there was an ipad app that would give you the feedback from the panel. Seems like that wouldn't be that difficult for a software designer. Funny that on the end of my panel I have scopes on an ipad.
Anyone want to buy an original Micro Panel?! haha. This thing looks like an amazing upgrade Darren. The shift up/down buttons are going to be a game changer.
I wouldn't use that holder anyway it sucks. Just place in front of it in a Smart Folio case or something it's plastic and cheap feeling on an expensive iPad Pro. I won't even risk scratching mine.
I'd need to try a demo version at a store BEFORE i even consider. Ipad screen would need to be at least 15inch to 17.3 max. Worst case scenario, id cash in on the mini panel instead hooked up to my PC. This looks more like run n gun color grading.
Darren ask if they will be showing Linux a little more love? I have DR Studio running good. Speed Editor even works but Bluetooth no longer connects. Panel no longer shows up but does work on USB. Wish I was there!!!.
Thanks for sharing. I have the Asus studiiobook 16 oled, 64gb ram, 5tb storage and I film on OMSYSTEM's OM-log 400 what input node and out put node settings would I use. I use your node tree you sent out Thanks in advance
Scopes on the iPad in my studio was my first thought as well - does ScopeBox or Omniscope have an iPad version? Or would it work best to use the iPad as another screen for the Mac and run scopes that way?
bought one and it doesnt work with the iPad app yet. I was a little upset about that. I know the update is coming soon but they never mentioned it.. like, at all..
What is the differerence between the (DE) and the (EN) Version of this Panel ? .... is the button description in German on the (DE) Panel or what exactly is the difference ?
It really frustrated me on the first iteration that it didn't have add node.... Have they included "Offset" on the rotary knobs? (all they needed to do is when Offset is enabled make the luminance wheel or knobs to act as offset). Back light is nice. I'll stop complaining I have a mega list on Resolve that needs addressing but can't be stuff formalising it.
Blackmagic should've made a more in depth videoo about this. We know almost nothing about the new features and functions, and the official presentation showed an image that had different key function layouts. There seems to be improvements over the first Micro Panel, but those are not so well informed. Nice almost all their products have dedicated web pages, but none of the panels get one. It's even more important now that the three options available for purchase are fundamentally different in terms of funcionalities and usage.
I want one so bad! I just wish it cost a little less. Like $400 would be alright maybe, then it's a 100 dollar keyboard when buying the 300 dollar software. At 500 I kindof want to be able to use it in the edit/cut page aswell so like have the speed editor or part of it built in. Maybe actually it would be nice if you could move the play head with the balls or the rings around them.
Was it just me or did that British BMD rep seem a bit condescending to our Darren? Hands on a budget plastic USB controller.. What a treat for our Professional Colourist!
Not at all. Simon is a very good friend of many years now - we have good banter together! He is one of the nicest people you could ever meet and was certainly not condescending.

I'm really excited for this panel.
