- This is a video walkthrough of the basic process to change the oil in a Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave, or GM Acadia. This video will walk through step by step and should be accurate for 2009-2012 models. This will also show you how to reset the oil life gauge on the dash. I have been changing my own oil for years and highly recommend it over using the cheap drive-through oil change places. Use good oil, change the oil every 5000 or less miles, and your engine will run smooth and last a long time.

If you look in the oil cap, it says 5W-30. That it’s the manufacturer recommended.
You should also remove the oil cap, before you open the oil plug. That way it will flow better.
That is the way it should be done.
Great video, very informative and just what I needed. The only suggestion that I would add is that the oil life reset for the LT is actually the mileage reset button held for 10 sec while the oil life display is showing ... Keep up the good work!

Great Video SSLFD! I just bought the 2010 Traverse and am a "Do it yourself" kind of guy. My only comment is that I absolutely always put my vehicles up on ramps. It helps by tilting the engine and allowing more of the dirty oil run out AND it allows me the chance to look around at all my other under car stuff. Brake lines, calipers, exhaust...all that stuff. Again, great video and you taught me a lot of good stuff! Thanks!

Thanks for a great video. After getting my first oil change on my wife's 2011 traverse for 85.00 I was done. Normally I paid about 25.00 for conventional on my car. I had no idea synthetic was so much more expensive. I found the oil and filter at Walmart for less than 40.00

Based on the questions I am seeing here I am going to append the video to include a blip on the manufacturer's recommendations on oil type. The manufacturer recommends 5w-30 oil.
I've been changing my oil for the last 15 years or so on various vehicles and this is the first time on a 2012 traverse but had a hell of a time getting it to align the new one ... I couldn't get it to thread. Have you noticed this too? Also, the manufacturer recommends Dexos oil, what's your take on that?
jeremiahdbartsch I have had trouble getting it to thread also. I think it is just the angle that it is at, takes me a few tries also. I am now using Mobil 1 synthetic oil so I think that is equal to or better than the manufacturer recommendation.
SSLFamilyDad that's what I used (Mobil one; it's expensive though) and I agree, it's the angle...took me about an hour hanging out of the engine compartment.

On your filter prep , always a good idea to prime filter with new oil before installing pour new oil into filter let filter media absorb then tilt sideways over drain pan then install

SSLFamilyDad Good video. Experience with quick change place...wife went ahead of me on oil change for Camry and not too long after, the oil filter they used began leaking around the seal. I snugged with no movement but leak continued. Finally changed out the filter to a name brand and no further problem. Suspected reuse of another used filter. Who knows.
5w-30 not 10w-30 just look on the engine oil cap
I blew out my engine on my car for having thin oil mechanic said should of gone 10-30 even though the cap said otherwise
Most GM engine's now call for Dexos 5w/30 of that model yr generation
So a good indicator of how much oil is a dip stick to go by those 3 little holes? If the 1st little hole is filled up with oil that is a good level?

She have 2 pumps one inside the gas tank and the other is mechanic at the driver side of the motor that is a regulator too. If she start the problem can be the one at the motor. If she don't start is probably the one at the tank

Dear SSL, Thanks for this helpful video. What about the oil spill after removing the oil filter? Have you noticed it to be a mess to clean up? Is there a built in drip tray that leads the oil from the oil filter area to the bottom to flow into the oil pan? Or did you just have to wipe away all the oil off other parts with a lot of shop towels? I'm about to change the oil on my 2012 Traverse for the first time. Thank you for your response.
No problem Alex. I just place the oil pan under the area where the oil filter is when I change it. There is not a lot of oil that comes out there if you drain the oil first before taking the filter out. Use cat litter to cleanup anything that might get on the floor but you should not have to really clean up anything else. good luck and let me know if you have any questions!
the oil drips along the cross member for the core support, engine mount and ac compressor... ideally if you have some brake clean after you remove the oil filter spray that down on to it.. it will run the oil from there to the bottom side and if you can be underneath the car spray from the bottom.
if you dont it can drip and make it seem as if you have an oil leak when you dont

Manufacturer says oil must have DEXOS listed for use in the Traverse. Also, the oil life monitor reset is a bit different on different trim levels. An LS model doesn't have the DIC setup you have in the video. Resetting the oil life monitor on an LS is similar, but it is done with the reset button on the tach. (Excellent video)

+SSLFamilyDad That's what I put in, too. It has the DEXOS label on it. I know a "typical" vehicle is going to use a little oil, but I got around 4 qts. out. That is pathetic. Also, the dealer installed the shorter of the two filters that are available for the Traverse (PF48E installed instead of the longer PF63E). I got the longer filter, but it is the Mobil1 version. Couldn't find the AC Delco brand in stock anywhere.

+Scott Holder thanks man, yeah I always use the Mobil one extended life filters now too. They seem to be working well and you say so much money getting the premium oil and filters and doing it yourself
Mobil1 is a good oil, but performs poorly in this engine. Oil analysis at oil change show a higher than normal amount of wear metals in the used oil with Mobil1. This has been replicated over many tests by many people. The oils that perform best are Valvoline Synpower and Pennzoil Platinum Plus. Heads up.
Very important. Use FULL SYNTHETIC oil for gasoline direct injection engines including the GM 3.6 high value engine. Also, you need 5W-30 not 10W-30.
It's ok to use 10W-30 in 5W-30 applications, when the engine is warm it's the same viscosity (30 weight) the only difference is when the engine is cold. Maybe allow a little more time to warm up in the winter
Fantastic video. My dealer has been using a Mobil conventional oil for my gmc acadia (same engine and has 70k miles). I did read several comments on gmc forum that this engine should run on synthetic oil. Would changing from conventional to synthetic oil damage the engine or cause any leaks?
That is a great question and one that many people ask. From what I understand Synthetic oil is better and is recommended in these engines. However, there are people who report more leaks or burning of oil (normally minor) in engines that have higher mileage and have been running on regular oil. I am not a mechanic but I have gone to using full synthetic on all my vehicles regardless of what they have been running in the past. both less than 110,000 miles. It would not think switching would damage anything. Thanks for watching!
on the 08 conventional oil is fine... what is spec for anything 11 and up is dexos 5w30 or dexos 0w20 depending on the car/truck for gm ... dexos is a semi synthetic oil as long as you use dexos or an equivalent you will be fine

This works on a 2012 Chevy Equinox too correct? I didn't like the $90 price of an oil change from jiffy lube so after this video I felt I was competent enough to try it myself =)!
I do believe that this is almost identical to the 2012 Equinox so you should be good. There are some different engine configurations etc so it might not look exactly the same but the process is the same. Good luck, you wont be sorry getting this done yourself!

$90 for an oil change ? LMAO i work for a gmc /buick dealership as tech and typically we charge 39.95 for oil change and tire rotation with multipoint inspection ...
sometimes the dealer is the better option... and cheaper

they use the oil that is recommended by the manufacture for your car...
lets say you have a 2015 chevy silverado with a 5.3L engine... that takes 8 qts of 0w-20 dexos oil
dexos is a synthetic oil that GM ENGINEERS designed the engine and everything around running on that oil.
why would the use a cheap oil ( an engine cost and labor to be replaced about $7500 on average at a dealership ) if they have to warranty that engine ?
plus most GM have a maintenance plan when you buy a new car for 2 yrs/24,000 of oil changes at no cost to owner.. of course this can very by brand gmc, buick, chevy, etc and model ...
Why are you using 10w30 when it takes 5w30 I have a 10’ Lt and I’m ab to change the oil!!!
i got 2011 acadia i asume location is same for both types since when shopping for parts certain parts fit both parties

Do u know how to reset oil life on chevy colorado 2004
Turn the ignition to run (one position before starting engine).
Display OIL LIFE on the DIC by pressing the reset stem button.
Press and hold the reset stem.
The oil life will change to 100 and a beep will sound.
Turn the ignition off and then start the engine to verify the indicator has been reset.

turn key on engine off ... press the gas pedal 3 times in 5 seconds and it will reset.. works for all gm makes with a oil life monitor
Why are you using 10w30 oil in the SUV when it say right on oil cap 5w30 oil?
Good question and I should have explained that in the video. Depending on the time of year I may use 5w30 or 10w30. Since we will be coming up on spring and summer I am using the slightly thicker 10w30 which is a little better for warmer weather. Normally in winter or fall I will use the slightly thinner 5w-30. the two viscosities are very similar and will not harm the engine if you use one or the other. However, it never hurts to just stick to the manufacturers recommendation as well.

SSLFamilyDad Your engine has VVT or Variable Valve Timing, what this means is the ECU uses the oil as hydraulic fluid adjusting the timing of your engine, if the oil is too thick or thin the computer will see something isn't right and respond. The computer knows the ambient temp from your mass airflow sensor, and the engine temp from the thermostat **using ANY viscositity oil other than OEM recommended both voids warrenty AND risks serious inner engine damage, or at least turning on the check engine light if your lucky.** but don't take my word for it, go ask your dealer or another reputable mechanic, also, regular mechanics will also do an oil change, usually only 5 or 6 bucks more expensive, I know in my shop in central arkansas, we do them and after taxes they usually come out to $32.35, which is only about 3 bucks more than the quick lube places. On a side note always use a 6pt socket on any drain plug to prevent rounding of plug. other than that, not to bad!! also, IMO, synthetic blend oil is a waste, the non synthetic part of the blend wears out just as fast as conventional and then should be replaced.
Tony Garbarino First off, thank you for your feedback and I have no argument with what you said here at all. For all viewers it is always best to follow the manufacturer's guidelines when doing any engine maintenance. I will however make this point in my defense:) The difference between 5 and 10w oil is fairly small and should not (in my opinion) damage the engine and is within the engines sensors recommended range. I have not had any warning lights or trouble with anything so far. As to the dealerships, also a good option for oil changes, much better than the quick lube places and they normally do a fine job, thanks again for the comments!

My power steering went out on my '09, believe there is a recall or extend warranty on the early versions of the Traverse, mine went out at 35k

To much “um, ah, uh, here, might, so ah! geez dude! Get to the point! Tools needed, how much oil, and how to reset. Also easily noticed issues. Get.to.the.point! No reasons this should be a 16 minute video. All oil change videos should be more then 5 minutes! Before you bash me, I’ve done a tone of these. It makes me sick to watch some one “hee yaw” around with words and not get to the point!
