I found a low profile Oil Filter Socket made for the GM Ecotec at O'Reilly auto parts for $11.00 made by Performance Tools (#W80678), with that socket you do not need anything other than a 3/8 ratchet. Thank You for the video and I hope my added information helps.

Enjoy your informative videos. I purchased a 2014 equinox w/ 2.4L engine and I want to mention that mine has what looks like a galvanized aluminum oil pan. I just want owners to know to not over tighten the oil plug because you can crack the oil pan where the plug inserts. I've seen it done before on other vehicles. And the only way to fix it properly is to replace the oil pan.

Two things guys. 1) Every time I entered the vehicle make and model at EVERY PART STORE, it gave me the wrong filter. It gave me the canister type. So, I had to pull the filter and get the part number in order to get the right one. 2) Rather than buying that big ass socket that you probably won't have any other use for and the swivel adapter, you can use a basin wrench; $13 bucks at your high end hardware store, probably less at your economy tool stores, and it is a very versatile tool. I've seen where guys are cutting the socket because it is too tall. No need to do that with a basin wrench. Hope this helps.

What happens is the "pilot" pin on the filter didn't go into the hole in the block correctly. You'll see it as that part with a point on it that has a small o-ring on it. Either that or a previous oil change resulted with that pin being broken off in the block and was left behind. Word of advice, get a dedicated oil filter socket just like was used in this video. All other ways don't work well. Another thing, there is a check valve in that plastic oil filter cap. Always change the oil filter first. That way you get all the oil out, other wise that oil stays in that chamber.

@@MrProline727 Yes.. the piston and timing chain issues are linked. . I just bite the bullet and change every 3000.. there were some guys in the equinox forums, having their oil lab tested, and the results showed that by 3000 miles, it was essentially a 5w-20, due to fuel contamination.
The only other major issue is clogged pcv. If you're in a climate with freezing winter conditions, look into an after market vented oil cap, to allow your crankcase to vent, in case the pcv is clogged. Major risk of a rear main seal blowing out, should that happen.

For the oil You need an oil pan and a size 15 wrench(not a ratchet) Put the pan further than usual as its verticle and shoots out as soon as you take off the lid For the filter it's right next to the engine on the mid right of the engine bay Switch sides of the crescent wrench each time you go at it and repeat the same for putting it on. Atleast on a 2015. P.S this is for a v4.

If you do not get that center spike with the "O" ring on it (bottom of oil filter) into the hole in the bottom of the filter housing as you tighten the cap you will most likely crush your oil filter.
Always install the oil filter into the oil filter housing. Then screw in cap. This will insure that the filter will not be crushed or mis shaken so it can do its job.

Please edit your comment so people don't put their 2.4l Ecotec LEA oil filter in upside down to the point they break the spike because they can't figure out why it's not snapping into the oil filter cartridge like what you're saying. Because that spike goes into the engine, not into the cartridge housing like what you're saying.

This oil has worked well for me. We've gone another 50k miles no problem (with regular oil changes). There's definitely alot of options and brands of oil, it's totally up to the owner what they want to run.

@@Altoelder Good for you. But in reality you missed my suggestion which is based on facts not feelings or emotions. You like to do oil changes & I get that. But I like unregular oil changes & go fishing or golfing instead. There are not a generalized 'lot of options' out there to have your engine run at it's best, saving you on oil changes, on mpg, repairs, emissions (catalytic converters & EGR's being expensive for most people), spark plugs, coolant system & the like. And the whole issue is this vehicle and all the problems people are having with this issue AND IT IS OIL RELATED. So for a higher quality oil that is actually cheaper than like what you are using, why in the world would someone ( NOT YOU of course) use an oil that may help solve their problems & maybe prevent future problems with said veh/eng, if the issue is oil related? At least try a better oil? Say it costs $20 more (which it doesn't) vs headaches & expenses involved with replacing parts? I wouldn't think twice. But then again I know all oil IS NOT THE SAME. Most can not absorb that fact. Not sure why but,..

Altoelder the previous response was to your '1 month ago' comment. A lot has happened in this past month. My daughters Equinox turned into dads issue after her bf spent time & $$ fixing it. I took it to have oil changed after the three attempted repairs, it ran better/ok for 5 or 6 days. I took it to repair shop. $165 vs dlrshp at $300ish estimate. It lasted two days. It was suggested to tear engine down at$3,500.00 to $4,000.00 to replace all cam timing & related parts. I changed the oil myself with the best oil out there. I also drained ALL the old oil completely out which most people do not. Even put a little clean oil in to help clean out old. I will keep you updated but so far we have set an all time record on this veh running properly for more than 6 or 7 days, in the last 8 months at about ( I not at home, vaca) 28 days. I was expecting it to act up again but I was also planning on changing the oil & filter again by now because the new oil I am using will help clean out the engine from sludge & varnish caused by the cheaper oils that have been used, which (dirt & varnish) is said to be a factor in this particular engine with it's valve timing system. I also had used a high quality filter. So, so far, higher quality oil is in fact making a difference for this vehicle & to us, not only the headaches she has had ( and me as well after being asked for help, mostly $$ lol) but it may save her (me actually, on SS & very tight budget ! ) $4,000.00.

Wow! That was a detailed response, followed by an equally detailed follow-up response! I think I sensed some exasperation and frustration in your voice as you have spent so much time under your daughter's hood. Rest assured my intent was not to anger folks on the internet.
I want to sa y thank you for taking the time to add your knowledge to the discussion. I am by no means a professional mechanic; I'm just a home-garage grease-monkey who made a video to try and help diy-ers.
Hearing from professional mechanics like yourself definitely helps the community and I welcome your input.
As a professional, what brand oil do you recommend? When I stand in the aisle at Walmart staring at a dozen brands of oil who each claim to have the "secret sauce" that makes them the world's best oil, I find it overwhelming. I'm not sure what is true and what is "creative marketing" by an overzealous advertising agent.
Id love to know what oil is the best.

Dean I haven't changed mine yet but I don't think they can be over tighten to the point of crushing the filter anyhow. Looks like the cap has a lip that can only go so far. Any cannister type filter I have changed has been that way.

@@brayan8346 great , then use it. We had all kinds of problems with same veh. Oil was changed three times. Vehicle fixed three times at shop. Next advice we were given by two mechanics was to spend $4,500 to replace engine. Since it was a oil related problem, I coughed up the extra money for a better quality oil & hoped it would work. And it did. 17 months ago & no problems yet. Might not work but for a few dollars more, what the heck. That is why I suggested it. I would suggest it again. That doesn't mean most people think all oil is the same and won't even think about trying it, which is fine. Just trying to help.

@@tubetime39 I don’t generally use it in fact I never have. But I probably will in the future. Your anecdotal evidence is not of much help in fact it just furthers the myths of oil types that many car guys spread. I’ve been using my work car as my tester for many different oil filters, air filters, brake pads, oils. And I’ve noticed that many parts that we look down on due to cost or lack of recognition are in fact great. Super tech is on one those brands. I was in the same field you are before. I refused to try anything from this “sub par” brand. The reality is that it makes great products to my surprise. Super tech oil is the same as Amazon basics and Costco’s Kirkland all of which are certified by GM and API meaning they meet the requirements to be used in engines designed for the type of oil. My family taught me Mobil 1 oil and Mobil 1 filter since I can remember. Now that I’m grown up and think for myself I’ve experience other products and they are just as good if not better.
