Hydrocarbon life might find space more hospitable than we do - at least in terms of temperature and the energy requirement of sustaining an artificial biosphere.
👍 nice
hey didn’t you write that song called chocolate spank
i've always wondered if there could be an alien civilization out there that has intent to do not good things, but they aren't able to come here because it is inhospitable. So the irony would be that our life bringing biosphere is their toxic poison and keeps us safe.
With your voice and piqued interest in science, you should certainly make at least one video with a space theme! You know, Just one... Then two, and three ...Until we have a Tay and John collaboration.
@@rarebirdfacts he did, and he's a RUclips OG
You inspired me to pursue a degree in Space Sciences and Engineering John. I applied to the University of Michigan and am waiting for a response. Thank you!
Go Blue.
Awesome young man. Good luck
Excellent, and best of luck!
@@JohnMichaelGodier John, do you plan on creating a discord?
Best wishes to you
Thank you John... Thank you Thank you thank you....
Did I say thank you?
I'm healing up from neck injury that changed my life profoundly. I have 2 clinical degrees and a Doctorate a D.N.P.
Can't work and it's driving me crazy.
Your calming voice and attention to detail really helps keep me in good spirits.
Sincerely, Thank you
I'm sorry to hear this I broke my neck and had an operation that fused 2 discs. I have constant pain and my neck leans forward. I will need another operation. I pray you heal quickly
You never know how strong you can be until you have to be.
You are doing great, because you are strong. Keep it going.
Dr strange.. the real door to your life is yet to be opened best wishes for you and a speedy recovery..if you never watched Dr strange now is a good time
Best of luck in your recovery Rick. I've been through something as well (severe pneumonia), and it got life threatening for a bit. I remember the whole time wishing I could just get back to normal and work, and get rid of the pleurisy that resulted. That was 20 years ago and obviously I did recover, so best wishes and take it day by day.
Mary I am sorry for your pain. My situation is very similar. 2 impingements from slipped/herniated discs. Its possible I broke my neck years ago but I was a solid built tough man in those days. I suffered for a year plus. They couldn't really say for sure but I'm confident that is what happened.
I lost use of my left arm due to constant spasms (total lockdown) and the pain was enough to out this tough guy down in my knees in tears. Thankfully being a male nurse I was able to get things rolling. Healing is happening. But like you I need surgery long term. Which us why i have been refused to be released for work.
I pray you get the help you need ma'am.
You've become a noticeably better story-teller over the years. Amazing work. Thanks for everything.
First, I am a chemist. Second I am a professor of chemistry at a university.
In one of my courses I do discuss the possibility of silicon based life. In a nutshell, it is extremely improbable because:
1. Silicon does not generate long chains like carbon does (the limit is about four silicon atoms in a row).
2. Silicon is too large to form double/triple bonds with other atoms. So there are no silicon analogs to functional groups like carbonyl, amido or carboxyl groups. This would hinder any silicon-based biochemistry.
While I would love for a “Horta” to be possible, the unfortunate scientific reality is that it is highly unlikely.
Even if the chance of it occurring is almost zero, almost zero is not zero. The universe is so extraordinarily huge that chances are extremely high that silicon life either does exist (or once existed) somewhere.
Yes, silicon self-organizing through natural evolutionary processes into life is probably improbable for the reasons you mentioned, but civilizations of machine intelligence "life" constructed of doped silicon "circuits" and quantum computer brains along with bodies made of exotic materials which can self-heal and repair is more probable. Our definition of "life" is problematic as I can envision scenarios where silicon-based machine life could reproduce, having children, and show the other characteristics of life as defined by Terran biologists. The major assumption I am making is that it wasn't Nature, but intelligent organic life which constructed silicon life which further evolved far beyond its organic creators.
You display your limited imagination with your statements. Don’t be so arrogant as to assume silicon life must utilize similar structures to carbon based life. To imagine different life, based on an entirely different element, why would you apply earth and carbon based restrictions?
Thank you for your comment(s). You put forth some facts I had not considered when analyzing specifics of the Drake Equation.
Joey, Thank you for your taking time for writing this comment! I am a theoretical physicist. My first work, some 30+ years ago, was on computational quantum chemistry; this is as much as I know chemistry-not much at all. I was digging deep, but only into a single bond, having no computing power back then for a whole 3-atomic molecule. I see another problem with C vs Si, viz their oxides: while CO₂ is a soluble gas broken up at Earth's conditions by photosynthesizers, no such process can break up SiO₂, hopelessly solid with high melting point and a very strong Si-O bond even in a melt; besides, most biochemistry can only happen in aqueous solution.
But there in fact exists an alternative to ATP+O energy transport: deep ocean anaerobes extract energy from black smokers' thermal gradient by hijacking S redox instead of P (thought to be similar the earliest life chemistry, though all evidence is long gone), other anaerobes live deep below surface, using geothermal gradients, also sulfur-based. My next thought, triple C=C bonds are not very common in biochemistry; it's not unlikely that biochemistry possible without triple bonds. The #1 is the main show-stopper; re #2, as long as Si can form even weak double-bonds, biochemistry such that would scaffold them may potentially evolve.
Also, I'm reminded that a Si₆ aromatic benzene-like compound has been synthesized and proved stable (a solid decomposing at ~200⁰C). It shows strong bond delocalization, just like the C₆ aromatic ring. I also can't forget the interesting fact: it had been called “chair-shaped” in the paper, like /\/ if “looked at” from the side, with nearly right angles.
I'm now wondering whether or not Si-organic-like biochemistry possible in a polar solvent at different temperatures. The Si reluctance to form chains is unlikely to be helped by higher temperatures, but, thinking of the opposite, NH₃ is another small-molecule, polar solvent when in a liquid or supercritical phase, stable and abundant in the Universe. Like water, it has very interesting anomalous properties, stemming from non-negligible quantum effects in its small molecule, like delocalization of the H atoms, the three of which want to occupy 4 tetrahedron vertices-even more “quantum weirdness” than the angle between bonds in H₂O. Just in case you're aware of such research, has behavior of Si-chain compounds in solutions been well-studied at low temperatures?

Got to say I agree with everyone here, after a rain soaked winters day trying to build my extension getting in the bath and finding a new video from John, just terrific
The Life, Is Coming!
I love seeing a notification for this channel’s uploads
I've been subbed to this great channel for years now but Jon's "in which we liiiiive" still cracks me up every time!
Great content on this channel, but sometimes I think like this waiting to hear his famous catchphrase:
ruclips.net/video/37nwLhIA1zs/видео.html
Would you like some science-youtuber-recommendation or is this offer (meant to spread fun and science) too random?
yes
“…in which we LIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE” it gets me every time! Brilliant video dude, I love the weirdness of the physics around black holes, pulsars, quasars, and generally super dense objects in the universe. 🤘
Absolutely love when a new video is released. Like an excited kid knowing later his favorite bedtime story and dad’s soothing voice will loll him to sleep🥰😴And I’m a grown dad myself😂Thank you🙏
I wanna spread education and fun, so i recommend-around some youtubers like viced rhino, hbomberguy, tier-zoo, and such and such.
These are my bedtime stories too lol 😆
I agree with you. I also watch Astrum for the same reason although his videos never seem to be long enough. But they are about the cosmos so all is good.
Great episode as always John.
The bit at the end about time dilation on potentially habitable "blanets" got me thinking.. IF there's a natural phenomenon that skews time in the opposite direction, (1 earth standard year = 1000 years in this hypothetical place) and IF habitable planets can exist in such a place, then life on such a planet would have eons of evolutionary advantage over us. I can't even imagine how technologically advanced a civilization like this might be.
ruclips.net/video/JqKa6qyVYgg/видео.html
8:35 in this video might answer your question.
That's where we are right now, in a simulation location where this occurence takes place ;)
As far as we know, this is far from being possible. In order to have "slower rime" relative to earth is to be as far away as possible from gravitational influences. Even then, the time dilation is very miniscule.
If they’re moving fast enough, perhaps they could evolve from bacteria to advanced civilisation with technology levels indistinguishable from magic, and show up on our doorstep seemingly out of nowhere.
reminds me of an episode of Star Trek Voyager.
I love how you end your videos John. You have such a unique way of telling stories. And I've always been a story hound, so thank you for many mornings of enjoyment. Take care.
I spent a weekend in Dundee once, so I know all about forsaken places humanity should not visit.
Certainly a City of Discovery
Dundee's really nice. Some great taverns and restaurants, the McManus, the waterfront, marvellous views.
Saginaw is a bit like that.
Were there crocodiles?
I always get the best sleep after watching 20 minute long uploads, and then listening to them again when the melatonin starts kicking in.
Just in time for bed, i love your voice and how u share your knowledge! Thank you JMG 💯
Another gem by the reputable JMG. Thanks for the frequency at which you release these to us lately. It really gives me something to look forward to. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
I'm enjoying making videos, so much more to come.
That was the most mind-blowing presentation yet! Keep 'em coming...
Thank You.
I'm retiring to a blanet. Little drinks with umbrellas and a nice tan. ;) Thanks for the video John.
Paper drink umbrellas are a must.
Sweet ! Just in time for a new upload . I really enjoy listening and watching these videos 😎👍

The only Space channel I really value and love ❤️ thank you so much John Godier.
Hello from Odessa, TX! I got a little surprise to hear you mention my neck of the woods and our meteorite! 😁
I've been there, great town. Have you been out to check out the craters?
Glad I found the channel. Thanks for another video John, I hope you continue to grow!
Watching this on my phone, John's name is too long to fit on my screen so it just says "John Michael God...". Seems fitting.
Dude, you should have millions of subs. That is a sad appraisal of our world today. Carry on with the content, your two channels make my brain in a jar happy!!
What’s the other one?
Absolutely love your videos John. Can't wait for the next 👌

Best Days of My month when I see a new video from JMG. I Love ❤ 😍 💖
Every time you upload I get a little giddy, knowing I have an amazing video to fall asleep with.... except I keep listening until it's over lol. Sleep always comes AFTER your video's!
My podunk mountain town has one factory: a pencil factory! Old one, from the 1920s! Yay, we finally made it into a space related video!
It's even deeper. My pencil tangent wasn't just musing. I work in pencil and have since I was a kid, so all the notes for Event Horizon and these videos, the books etc. tend to start with me, a good sharpened pencil and a yellow legal-lined pad of paper. Entire outlines for books were written this way. Some years ago I found that the classic US made standard school pencil I grew up with .... was no longer US made, other than a small amount of units used to play into US trade laws in a rather shady way. All while still emblazoned with a very American trademark. I wasn't a fan of that, so have since searched out independent pencil factories in the US and Europe. So, you never know, your pencil factory may have written a book or notes for an interview.
@@JohnMichaelGodier That's pretty cool. I also favour pencils, but not the mechanical type! I tend to do a first draft in pencil, then rewrite with a fountain pen. In my part of the word kids are still taught calligraphy. My daughter is seven, and we've mostly kept her away from computers* to develop that skill. She's just about starting to develop penmanship.
* I'm not a luddite, but I figure computers evolve so quickly that whatever she learns age 7 will be completely obsolete by the time she's 27 and needs to earn a living. Other skills... not so much.
Oh definitely not the mechanical type. It must be wood with a decent rotary crank sharpener mounted to the wall nearby. I still think hand writing is important. Typing on a computer just doesn't quite lead to the type of creativity that comes from writing by hand. I'm 46 and know my way around a computer, but I swear I'm more creative writing by hand than typing, so it's good to teach the young the craft of it. Honestly, I bet it makes a comeback some day.
And yes, when I learned to type in high school it was on a manual typewriter lol. Technology mostly left that behind. And with phones advancing, who knows what everything will look like in ten years. Most internet users don't even own desk top computers these days.
@@JohnMichaelGodier You know, I was rewatching your videos and I stumbled across this comment! Funny how things change! Who knew that a few weeks after writing that the world's press would descend on my little city! You can never really predict the future, I guess.
I think we should separate the chance of biogenesis from the chance of presence of life. Life might only form under certain conditions(.i.e. Earth), but have panspermia transport them to more extreme places.
There might be life in the oceans of Europa, but brought by Panspermia instead of biogenesis.
Then you have to find where it came from and how it evolved there
Thats a.... really really heavy mystery to try to accomplish
You sound like you’re assuming Earth is the source of abiogenesis, at least for the solar system. Please open your mind to the possibility that life began somewhere else and panspermia brought it to Earth. I do not know either way, but I think the assumption is a potential pitfall. The likes of which only get proven wrong centuries later.
Are you saying that extremophiles are more likely to evolve slowly on one planet and be transported to another very extreme environment through panspermia? In an incomprehensibly large universe this could even be considered likely with enough time. However the endless space between systems could also make this almost impossible. For example in a couple million years when we collide with Andromeda the odds of 2 stars colliding is around 1 in a Quadrillion. These are the kinds of questions I would love to see answered sooner rather than later.
I like you guy. Your voice is calming and your information is interesting. Gratzie mio
I suspect that when we do encounter an intelligent alien species, they'll have pencils too. Even if there's no need to write with them in their culture, they're a really convenient way to put a little bit of lubricant in a very specific place. Any species with technology that has moving metal parts will find this useful.

It's impossible not to completely enjoy this dudes content
A good chill science stream keep it up brother
I can't wait to see your video on the table top warp bubble that was reported on on december 6th.
In the future space travelers will read from almost infinite audio video libraries. Voices like this should guide us among the stars. Yours will fit nicely. Thanks for the amazing video.

I look forward to your videos. Excellent information.
So John, what you're saying is that there are blackhole suns but can they wash away the rain? And would they come if called?
Had to watch since I suspect I have a cold with a running nose (have to test tomorrow). I say Blanets all day.

Of all the footage on this channel, I really wasn't expecting a clip of someone sharpening a pencil. Gotta keep us on our toes.
Always look forward to these.

So, If a doctor were converted into a strange matter, would be become the Dr Strange?
Mind blowing stuff!
Came for the neat science. Stayed for the liiiiiive.
I have a question- what do you think a person converted into strange matter looks like? You're a scifi writer so I'm sure it will be great
Perhaps they have strange orange skin and an unconvincing blondish quiff ..... 🤔🤔🤔
Pretty sure it looks like the CEO of a leading social-media corporation.
Given how condensed strange matter is, they would be very tiny. A single individual might be too small to see without a microscope.
Although you might have trouble looking at them close up as well, since even the hot liquid metallic hydrogen deep inside gas giants might as well be a frozen vacuum to a strange matter creature.
The extremely high temperatures and pressures mean that the average energy of particle interactions is going to be much higher than in any remotely Earth-like environment. Combined with the much more condensed nature of strange matter, and it seems plausible to me that an ecology composed of strange matter would operate at a much faster base rate of speed. So communication could be an issue as well; from their perspective, it might take us centuries just to say "hello"!
I'm afraid that it's more likely to be a small puddle of dense goo than anything remotely human.
@@NoXion100 your answer is the best most logical one that doesnt have do with an orangutan, but I pictured something like "NoWhere" in Infinity War, where people get turned into slinkies

Sci-fi/horror writing prompt: undead strange matter person. Has anyone ever done anything like that? Seriously, between strangelets and vacuum decay we'd hardly be the poorer for cosmic horror if Lovecraft had found a good therapist before he ever put a word to paper.

That was an adequate ending "live". 👍
This episode conjures pretty strange visuals. I'm sure I'll be dreaming about hyper carbonated planets with bizarre, hostile geology and landscapes tonight
I saw the notification and thought this was going to be a Destiny 2 meme post, lord help me.
WTF I was thinking about what would be the hardest to visit yet visitable planet for any civilization, and then this video came out.
I was thinking something similar just yesterday. Basically for an advanced civilization, how they could classify worlds that can be colonized or even terraformed.
Awesomeness always
Aside from the excellent information you provide, you are pretty damn funny!
Best wishes with thanks for your videos, JTI
great video, though you forgot to mention an antimatter planet 😀
