  • Hyundai's least expensive IONIQ 5 has plenty of nice features, but it has tough competition. Sadly, the value proposition for this base model isn't as good as I'd hoped against competitors like Tesla and BYD.

I'm a bit disappointed that this isn't a review of the refreshed Ioniq 5. It's been announced months ago and addresses gripes like the usb-a chargers and no rear windshield wiper. I hope you can review that one soon.
Because of the refresh, existing Ioniq 5's are now offered with a big discount in Europe. I hope that happens in Australia too.

This was the most up to date car Hyundai gave us. Will be more than happy to review the updated model. Discounts are on their way through dealerships, but nothing official from Hyundai themselves. But there still needs to be more attention on range and software to make these cars more appealing.

I like the look of the Ioniq5 but I'd avoid that version. For a small battery EV I'd want LFP as it could be regularly charged to 100% without damaging the battery.
Although $73k when a Model Y is available for about $60K on road? I prefer the Hyundai but for that price difference it's hard to justify the extra. It's time for the Ioniq5 to get a price cut 🙂

There have been so many price adjustments to the Tesla range since I filmed this. With the current prices, I'd grab a base Model Y for similar money to this everyday.

Great review, unlike the traditional "auto journalists."

Watch sales tank as the few EV buyers left rush for discounted Teslas. Buyers with common sense are staying well away from EVs until the prices settle. Anyone that bought in the last 2 years is now looking at massive depreciation. I just traded a 2019 petrol v8 for a new car and it lost a total of A$16k over 5 years of ownership. EVs are losing that in the first year.

Great review, but not a car I could love. Range is miserable and USB-A?? Hyundai needs to make this car catch up to modern times. Build quality, inside and out looks good. Ride quality seems good and it drives reasonably well. Hyundai make good cars, this one seems more suited to urban use than distance driving, and I do think you can do better for the money you’d spend on this. Rear wheel drive is good, more battery, better range, and USB-C might make the car more attractive, plus a price point that makes is more competitive through the full range of the Ioniq 5. Thanks for an informative review.

Thank you for watching! It had a good start, but as you mentioned, there are some big improvements that need to be made to compete with BYD and Tesla.
