I've been doing tree work for over 20 years now. I climbed for 11, then ended up with a bucket truck.... I gained like 120 Lbs since then. I've recently started climbing again, but man its tough learning new tricks. I feel like this may help me get back into it and lose some much needed weight. Thanks for the video. You might try using a foot ascender if you have a kernmantle rope. It can help on your ascents. Take care!
My Office buys everybody the tachyon ash. What hits would you recommend so that the knot doesn't slip like you spoke of? I used to use the taughtline. I tried the VT, but I don't think I like it..

@@rickyvonbergenjr7975 Sometimes adding an extra wrap may help or find the hitch that works well for you. We have a play list of climbing hitches you may find one you like best.
There’s a book called plant paradox that helped me lose a lot of weight without trying very hard. Premise is simple: just like tigers and bears will evolve bigger claws and Become faster so that they reproduce. Plants will also evolve mild toxins and so they are less likely to be eaten. I switched from brown rice and whole grains to white rice and largely avoided alcohol and wheat. Lost about 30lbs over a year. Ate as much as I wanted. I know everybody is different, but I thought it was worth sharing.

I've been trying to start my own tree business for past year or so and I've been studying to become an Arborist, so I've been trying to learn all the knots and different techniques to use to make things safe and secure. I must say I enjoy watching your videos more then any other. Can't really say why, really. I just enjoy the way you explain how to do things and what equipment you need to do it.

@@BinoH Ken Palmer showed me the Blake in 1995. I attended some Arbormaster training and did a lot of jamboree stuff, then didn't climb much for years. I'm getting back into it, and adding some new techniques. I'd love to order a Notch Jet Step, but don't want to get into mechanical devices in place of a knot. I still hip thrust a lot, but this system here looks like I can combine some new things. My legs can help me advance, and this will tend my slack. Together, this will help me rope climb, especially when I use a throw bag to set a line, instead of climbing up the backside of the tree's lean. Great vids. We even have the same saddle!

Used today with an Alpine Butterfly. Worked pretty well. Definitely good advice concerning running hitches.

I am extremely glad to find this ingenious never would have came up with it on my own but I learned on a Blake’s hitch and trying to tend my slack was a funny sight to see. This will be a great I may just finally be able to take the Samson true blue out of the truck

I use this system only instead of a clove hitch I use a half inch swivel eye trigger snap and a small carabiner like a key chain size connect it to my 3 hole hitch climber pulls and I run the working end around my bridge and back to the bottom hole on my hith climber pulls you can adjust it to the height you want it for a good long pull with a hand ascender .....works for me.....Thx for the vid never thought of a clove hitch

At about 4:30, perhaps worth mentioning you are safe to dismantle main line because lanyard provides fall protection.
I’m sold. I’ve been using the Blake’s hitch and wanted to transition to a rope wrench but just don’t feel comfortable yet. I think that this is the ticket! I can layer rope wrench it out if I still want to!

Not mentioned but I feel this technique could also be good for returning from a limb walk. I feel once you get to a safe part in your limb walk, you set this up, that way as your returning you don't have to underhand tend the hitch. Like you mentioned it would require to do hand over hand witch causes the hitch to loosen up and might be a technique for a more advanced climber and not a beginner.
Also not mentioned, but maybe is in another video, is using a termination knot could interfere with the hitch capturing the rope if they get close together. I watched and not once in your video does this happen, but it could. Worth e mention I feel.

I never used this technique comming back in from a limb. I always just used it for ascending and when I reach the canopy I switched it back. True I haven't had the termination knot hang up on the fiction hitch. Thank you!

My instructor showed me something similar, but instead of a sow hitch he used a tiny Prusik with a key ring to tend the slack.

Bino, first off, thank you very much for the awesome vid. Secondly, could you eloborate a bit more on the part where you said the hand over hand system may cause some friction hitches to run? I’m new to climbing and am interested which hitches/why they would run when doing that versus the hip thrusts.

You're welcome. When you body thrust your hitch goes up a short distance and then your body weight rests on it so it locks. Sometimes hitches may run if you go upward as you do hand over hand and rest. There are a lot of different things that can cause that to happen. the length, diameter of your cord , diameter of your rope and the way you tie your hitch. The best thing to do is to practice your hitch in the method low to the ground.
Does this work for mechanical prusiks or do you have any other tips for self tending mechanical devices?
Is it possible to use an ascender (jumar) fixed with a personal lanyard to the harness, instead of using a friction rope machard/prusik) ?

Bino, do you have a video on when to decommission ropes or more specifically the prusik loops or eye to eye prusiks? It always makes me nervous to rely on the prusik cord as my only attachment to my climbing line. Often I'll throw a loop of webbing and attach that above my prusik with an auto block or klemheist as a backup to my prusik cord.
That said, we should hope to never be in a situation where the prusik cord fails or your main line breaks. Perhaps I should be anchoring my backup webbing, lanyard, or tether to the tree separately rather than back to the rope?
I don't have one yet but I will keep it in mind.
Hey Bino. I've bene using the clove hitch as you say in this video. It's working really good and makes ascending easier. However, when I get to height I have a real hard time with the clove hitch. I try to just open up the carabiner and slide the hitch off so it will fall apart. however the clove gets so tight that it won't move. I have to take off my gloves and spend a long time messing with the knot to get it loose enough to move off the carabiner. Any advice? I'm using arbor-plex rope.
When I fist started to use this technique I was using the alpine butterfly but there is a chance that the carabiner can side load. That's why I feel like the clove would be better to use.
Thanks for the video Bino. Is the clove hitch in this setup considered your backup fall protection? Meaning, will it catch you if for some reason the prusik hitch fails to catch?
No it does not take the place of a prusik. You are creating a longer bridge with your rope so the closed hitch system will tend as you pull.

Hey Bino, so the rope rubbing against the tree bark when you are hip thrusting doesn't damage the rope?. I always use a friction saver, but it seems like the ability to toss it up and advance it farther like you do in this video could come in handy . Especially if you can't get a good angle to get your friction saver up to the branch you really want to tie in to from the ground. I mainly climb oaks, which the bark isn't anywhere near as smooth as the tree you're climbing here. That's why I'm not sure if going without a friction saver would be a good idea or not.
No it has not damaged the rope or the tree. This is a Holly Oak (Quercus ilex). You could always work your way up the tree to final tie and then set up your friction saver. It is always nice if you can throw to a high point with a shot bag and set up a friction saver.

You said the hitch was a French prusik in the beginning of the video. I’ve looked for tutorials and what I’m finding on RUclips appears to have more wraps. Is it possible you mis-spoke or can the French be tied with a varying number of wraps? Thanks great video

Wow this is great Bino. Its just what I've been looking for. I've been using double Blakes recently to make my ascents . I've been just starting to experiment with XT and VT hitches but the pulling overhead can get annoying . I was wondering with the system you demonstrate in this video does it matter if the hitch is VT XT or Distel or will any three of those work ?
I think as long as the knot is tied correct it should work but if you try to do the hand over hand some knots may run on you when you rest. I would be best to use them low before you take it high.
@@BinoH Kool. Thanks Bino. The reason why I asked is because my prusik is little different than the one in your video. I have a 30 inch where the eyes have to be tied and adjusted manually. I may have shorten it down if I decide to use the French prusik. Even if I do VT or XT I'll just do a lot of experiment with the low and slow like you said. Could I do a closed system self tender with a DMM ECCENTRIC HitchClimber? When wearing a double bridge saddle I use a tending prusik on my tail end when I MRS climb with just a Blake's hitch. That system i use more for bowhunting, not for arborist work.
I have not used a DMM ECCENTRIC Hitch Climmber Pulley but it I believe you are able to use in that system.

Depends on how rough the bark is how often you use it. It normally does not harm the tree but it also depends on how strong the bark is some trees may peel. On thin bark tree using a friction saver would stop the bark from peeling.

Hi Bino, will the friction knot still works when wet?
The last time I was using a wet rope about 4 years ago my knot jammed on me and I had to retie it worked but it was very tight. I was using an MRS system and firefly rope with and 8mm HRC cord. I don't climb very often in wet condition. Different cord and rope might have differnt reaction.
Hey bino,, problem... my distel hitch always gets to tight coming down.. it cinches up and keeps on cinching til i can hardly pull it down.. is it the material of my hitch, or diameter, or loops, I'm using 1down 4 up loops on my distel.
Yes the type of rope and diameter can make a difference on the way the hitch performs. When I used the Distel it would be too tight sometimes for me. One of the reasons I explored other hitches. I like the Michoacan and the Knut. What length is your cord?
@@BinoH about 24 to 28 inches.. i made my own chord with 8mm, 16 strand static.. with fisherman's knots on the ends to connect to the caribiner. The total length looks like yours in the video.. hey, on a different direction, i love using my rescue figure 8 below the hitch climber pulley.. i gives me confidence as a secondary belay device plus gives you the action of a rope wrench.. i know,, it's in a drt system,, but confidence and security are key to manuverability.. your clove hitch set up allows the room fir the figure 8.. and the figure 8 does more than the rope wrench, it also allows you the lock off.. peace of mind,, low tech
Also, I'm a retired fireman, 28 years.. that's where i cut my teeth on all things rope.. so i found a place to use all that stored up knowledge in arborist work
@@tyhnbgtyhnbgt It sounds like your using 5 wraps on a 28 inch cord. If I'm using a 24" cord I use four wraps but is it's longer than 24" I will use five.

Bino: what kind of saddle are you using? I notice that you have a large ring on the bridge of your saddle: what kind of ring is that? Is it ok to clip into the ring with your MRS carabiners? What do you think about placing a swivel on your bridge instead of a large ring?
The saddle in this video is a Buckingham Master 5.0. The large ring comes with the saddle I believe it's a Buckingham ring. Yes you can use carabiners on the ring. Some people use a swivel on their bridge. Hope this was helpful.
Is it allowed to hang on positioning lugs only without main rope? they are only for positioning, not for fall rescue. as manuals
I always believed that for MRS we need at least 2 main ropes
When you say lugs do you mean a lanyard? It depends where you are here in America one life line and a lanyard is proper. In some places they may require two life lines.
@@BinoH sorry. English is not my native language. I mean the rings on the sides of the harness. These rings are for positioning, not fall prevention as from harness manual which I read. only for positions lanyard and requires main safety rope usage during work at height
Guys! Here’s an even easier technique with the same equipment. Pulley and friction hitch on “down” side of rope, “up” side of rope attached to the same carabiner to tend instead of adding clove. Add an ankle ascender or foot prusic below your pulley and all you have to do is stand up and pull your “down” leg.
Are you saying to use a ascender or Pussik loop with an MRS/ Ddrt system?
@@BinoH Yes. I usually opt out because I'm young and lightweight but for any run above like 45 ft I put on a foot prusik below my pulley to give me extra lift and tend slack for me as i go. If not, I'm hauling myself up the rope with both arms, locking off with one arm, and tending slack. But I always keep my other length of rope connected to my device in order to pull it up the rope as I go. However I have experienced side-loading in this system, and if you're working a small branch it can be quite hard on your hands.

This MRS multi rope system actually only uses 1 rope & one lanyard right? Also those rope gloves look like the mechanics gloves @ harbor freight tools, where can I find them?

Not bad and it's not harming the tree but it is a smooth barked tree. It be a hole different story if it was a rough barked tree.

Yes if you are using a pulley tending system.
