  • The Toyota Rav4, one of the pioneers of that crazy compact crossover SUV segment gets a full treatment for this year! It's also more capable off-road with the addition of a new Multi-Terrain Select system!
    In addition to standard front-wheel drive, RAV4 gas models offer two types of available all-wheel drive. The new, segment- and Toyota-first, Dynamic Torque Vectoring All-Wheel Drive with Rear Driveline Disconnect comes standard on AWD-equipped Limited gas and Trail grade models. It can direct up to 50%of engine torque to the rear wheels, as well as distribute it to the left or right rear wheel to enhance handling on or off the pavement.
    When AWD isn’t required -on long stretches of highway, for example - RAV4 can achieve better fuel economy thanks to the Rear Driveline Disconnect system. The system uses the world’s first ratchet-type dog clutches to stop the rear-axle driveshaft’s rotation, thus significantly reducing energy loss and improving fuel efficiency.
    Standard on all AWD-equipped gas RAV4 models, Multi-Terrain Select gives drivers the ability to maximize traction when driving through mud, sand, rocks, dirt and snow. The system is easy to use thanks to control buttons or a control dial (depending on the grade) positioned to the left of the transmission shift lever.
    The driver can select Mud & Sand mode for beach driving or Rock & Dirt mode for trails. Using the Multi-Information Display (MID), the driver can view torque allocation and slip control, which changes depending on driving and road conditions.
    In addition, RAV4 models include the following features for optimal on-road and off-road performance and safety:
    - Hill Start Assist Control (HAC)
    - Trailer Sway Control (TSC)
    - Downhill Assist Control (DAC) (standard on Trail and Limited AWD only)
    So check out our diagonal test of the Toyota Rav4 AWD Limited 2.5L!

    Best advice: Put it into ROCK MODE before you get stuck in the middle of the hill. Do not turn TCS OFF and let the system do the traction work for you! Mud and sand mode is better when you want to keep the momentum!

      Snow: Equals for fun, both bring back the traction system or stability pass a certain speed. Subaru will have an edge when you are on the highway because it's always there!
      offroad: Similar but the suspension of the Forester makes it smoother.

      @@Crap783851 few days ago I took an Adventure model (new). I tried to climb a similar hill as this, but with grass and dirt. I used the rock and dirt mode, and the first thing I found, was the exhaust are too exposed on this car. Second, as soon I was with the 4 wheels back on the ground going up, the Rav4 struggled to continue. It was like there was no power going to the wheels, and no wheel spin at all. I had to move the front wheels left to right and the Rav4 gained traction. So basically it did the job, I don't know why the struggled, but I felt the car was capable, is just that the system took longer to understand the problem. But I got more disappointed of the approach and departure angles and the fact that still feels like a 2wd capable to send power to the rear wheels.

Its a momentum system. If you get alltrac tires and lift another 2 inches it will do just as good as most trucks in 98% of offroading scenarios.

It is a crossover, which means it is for city folks who live in snowy climates and this is adequate enough to get by 7 inches snow days during morning commute to work as opposed to a 2wd sedan stuck on the drive way. I test drove the 2019 RAV4 in a bad Canadian winter storm and enjoyed the ability to select the amount of wheel slippage. I have no need for off road capability but if I am loaded to the brim with skiers and passengers trying to climb a snow covered driveway, I would rather have this RAV4 than a CRV. Add the dynamic rear wheel torque vectoring on the RAV4 AWD and stability improves in dry and wet conditions. I think the point is to perform better than the main competition and in this AWD case I think Toyota have.

    • @subazealand9158
      @subazealand9158 5 лет назад

      Perform better under which circumstances? Subaru reacts quicker and better than here...check on this video, how the wheels on the air still spinning crazy even the car is climbing. X-Mode really stop those wheels (and does that quicker) to send all the possible power to the wheels with better traction. A new CR-V on this same situation reacts quicker than the Rav4, although doesn't have off road mode selection or active vectoring blah blah blah.

    • @DHEvans
      @DHEvans 5 лет назад +1

      Sorry, I don't see a link to your Subaru video. I agree there are many different circumstances you can test an AWD system and these days everything has become electronically controlled. My 1991 Subaru Legacy AWD required more driver skill and understanding than a modern X-mode Subaru. Even Subaru admits this. See description of all the electronic gadgets in X-mode. www.stanleysubaru.com/blog/2014/may/30/how-does-subaru-xmode-work---advantages-of-using-subarus-xmode.htm Toyota on the other had is giving back more control to the driver with multi-terrain select AND it does not shut off after 18 mph like the Subaru X-mode. Everyone knows about the famous Subaru AWD system but unless you are driving an STI , their new systems require less driver input. I believe this is in part due to adopting CV transmissions. ( Subaru fuel economy has never been great so to be competitive they have adopted CV ). Toyota is a famous manufacturer of rugged 4WD systems and developed a reputation with vehicles like the Land Cruiser FJ40, Hilux, Tacoma, Tundra and now I see they are making the RAV4 a little more rugged. The RAV4 engine produces more torque than Honda CRV and Toyota's traditional automatic now has eight speeds for applying torque, towing and using the more driver oriented AWD system. Honda CRV appear to be more interested in creating a pleasant urban driving experience with a turbocharged engine and CV transmission with an invisible AWD system used mainly in shopping mall parking lots. Toyota RAV4 is more versatile and could attract customers away from JEEP, another famous 4WD manufacturer.

    Good test to show the different modes and abilities of the rav4 awd. I did have the opportunity to drive a rav4 awd loner for the morning about a year ago while my tundra was getting an oil change and found it to be a nice little compact suv. The reality is unless you are hardcore you most likely won't utilize the benefits of these types of vehicles. These are basically pavement princes and princesses designed for winter road conditions comfortable and with a good utility value for storage and hauling people.

      Depends where do you live mate. I'm in NZ, we have lots of unsealed roads here. For most of them you only need a basic AWD, but we do also have lots of national parks, lakes and rivers. Our culture is the people enjoying the outdoors, camping on the weekends, going fishing with the kids...and for that you need to get out of the "unsealed" road, and most of the time this SUV will be lifting wheels, and you face in the nature lots of inclines like this... And it may be with grass...so I'm not talking of off roading on big ruts, and rocks...just your average spot next to the river. You need a responsive AWD.
