- Patreon just raised $155 million in our series F round of funding. I wanted to share with you what I think is happening in the creative economy and why Patreon raising $155 million is another sign that the future is going to be awesome for creative people!

I get a lot of comments about my optimism. Some folks love it, some folks think it’s naive. For what it’s worth - I’m not TRYING to be positive about the future - this is just actually what I believe will happen. I think a large portion of my thoughts are devoted to ideas I have for how I want things to be - stuff in the future. Most of my brain-thought/time is spent there. And as I’m dreaming about it, I’m thinking about where I want it to go, one year from now, five years from now. Like Scary Pockets - my funk band - when the pandemic finally finishes I see us throwing a three day festival in the mountains where fans can come and jam with each other, take master classes with Scary Pockets musicians, eat great food, sleep at the campsite and watch a Scary Pockets set each night. I spend time thinking about the world I WANT to live in. And that helps my present self plan and act to eventually get to that world. I guess what I’m saying is that optimism can be a self-fulfilling prophecy, so even if you think I’m naive, I’m just gonna run like hell in that direction, because it’s where I want to go.
I have one question: how about journalists, or writers? I am one, and am trying to see how, as a creator (writers and journos are content creators) can benefit from the technology changes? Please!! Some wisdom!!!
I imagine the people that think you're naively positive all the time, have no idea how much you have lived/suffered through incredible lows and gained massive amounts of wisdom to get here.
P.S. please consider having your festival at a place like Kern Valley Airport, so I can fly in with the small plane I am building thanks in large part to Patreon helping make my little youtube aviation channel into a full time project.
Does this mean that the completely broken and abandoned Patreon API will be improved?
I haven't felt so motivated in years. Keep these videos coming, your "optimism" is contagious and I for one welcome it.

seems ridiculous that on one hand jack conte is a musician and part of one of the greatest bands on youtube while on the other he's the ceo of a massive company that has a household name. most people would only strive for half of that!

You didn't create Patreon simply because you wanted to imitate other websites, you created it to fulfill a need you thought creators had, when (almost) no one else was taking care of that need itself.

My issue is visibility. The pressure of staying in people’s feeds pumps out mediocrity for the sake of consistency
Hey Kelsey, sure this is true but it's true at all levels of success. Hell, look at the late stages of Frank Sinatra! At the end he was doing duets with ANY new popular band in an effort to remain relevant. As an example, one of his later duets was with Twisted Sister (WTF?) just so he could stay in the feed. The phrase "You are only as good as your last hit song" has been around since the 60's and it will always be true. IMO, the trick is to pump out good content consistently and that is a difficult thing to do.
Expand your audience.
Extremely true. That’s why personally I set small goals for myself. I don’t reach for popularity, just to reach to a selected few then my art has done its job

Imagine one day when kids will say "nah, I don't want to be an artist like everyone else. I want to be a doctor, a teacher etc." ^^
It’s always been a significant point about you to share your information. That is a key to your success.
I wish I felt this optimistic. As an author, I wonder sometimes if I’m even part of this creator class-or if my artform is just plain dead because there’s not enough attention to read books anymore.
There will definitely be winners and losers in this new world. The winners will be the ones who are able to exploit the medium of the day.
@@jeffmpvd7689 Yes and it may rise the question of what's laying behind the "creator" term. If painters had to portrait kings to exist in the XVIe century, "creators" might have to release a huge load of hype/trendy content which mass will be dull or out of subject 6months after and forgotten 2yrs after. There probably will be people standing out. But aside of that, and considering the real life impact of these streaming technologies, is it worth heading towards a culture of mass low/mid consumable quality content ? This has to be taken into account i think. The question is not purely cultural or economical. The energetic/environemental side is as (or more) important.
You're a story teller. People are reading more than ever, just in different places than they used to. people are consuming books more than ever, too, just in different ways than they used to.

Because he would be. That sort of excitement is organic and can’t be faked, he’s naturally passionate and happy to be a part of this. Being married to an angel probably helps with his smile as well.
This almost brought me to tears, this is such a joyful and hopeful perspective on the future of creativity and I'm so happy I'm in my twenties when it's happening! It will be what I tell my grandkids :)

Jack, I just want to take a minute here and appreciate your creativity and your content. I first discovered you just about a decade ago when Bust Your Kneecaps was released. Then a few years back, i discover Scary Pockets and my mind was blown all over again. So I'm here like: man this guy and the people around him has some serious creative energy going on! Then I see your video to Casey Neistat and I'm blown away all over again with the creatively shot video that you came up with. There’s a very real part of me that wishes the entire video included the setting up of endless cameras without ever acknowledging them.
More importantly, this is so interesting/encouraging for creators everywhere!
Just don't let customer service fall through the cracks like every other company that's too big for their britches (e.g. no phone number to call... at all, thousands of unanswered questions, hundreds of people locked out of their accounts with zero explanation, etc, etc.) Be the pioneer in that space.

The question is what percentage of creators make a living? It's nice to highlight the superstars, but that usually means we're being sold a story.
This question has a lot of nuance underneath because it begs so many additional questions like "What amount of money is a living? What amount of work is a creator doing? What is the quality of one starving creator's work when compared to the output of a successful creator, and is that even quantifiable?"
@@whiteknives My experience has been that artists from the last 20 years defined themselves such that "I'm a sculptor but I work in set decoration"... it seemed that only a few artists would truly make a living doing their passion, and found jobs passion-adjacent working for movies or advertising agencies or web design.
I do worry that a lot of this is a popularity contest, the modern patron supported sculptor still has to hustle to get and keep that support or it will fade away. What you're actually getting good at is hustling and figuring out what people will pay to see... and at that point you might as well be working for the movies and doing your passion projects on the side.
Popularity seems to be viral, and somehow the "algorithm" picks and amplifies certain artists... it starts to feel like a lottery...
