I just used you as you used Gary Vee :) Thanks for being humble, confident, an exhibitionist, a hard worker, an amazing musician but most of all for trying so hard to be honest. You have been consistently kicking ass for so many years! Keep it up (if it suits you...)
All I knew about Jack Conte is that he is part of Scary Pockets, one of two band leaders of Pomplamoose and an awesome musician. I am absolutely floored he also started Patreon!
To all the Creators & Artists out there --- THANK YOU!!!!! from an Old White Lady - consumer/audience member. My hope & fear as an OWL is that I will die while there is still stuff to consume. Thank you so much for filling my days. I am never bored.
I really really love your storytelling style, humbleness, realness and how your heart showed through your videos! Thank you for being an amazing creator, artist, and entrepreneur.. every video I get new insights and feel expansion in my soul🙏
This talk is applicable to so many fields! I’m a college professor and I get ideas from Jack about how to tackle issues at the department, how to organize and get inspired for my research, and how to be a better teacher. Gracias ❤️
The bell curve for human attributes is brilliant. I've had this on my mind a lot recently -- the changes that will make one person's life vastly better is the exact opposite of what the next person needs. When unhelpful, universal life advice ranges from irrelevant to actively harmful. It helps both the speaker and listener to be aware of this dynamic so they can compensate or qualify advice.
Man you are awesome! Just wanted to say that you are a real inspiration for me. I have a band, i’m finishing film school and i cofounded a tech startup. So the topics that you speak helps me so much on all of those fronts. Thanks for all the knowledge!!
Jack, you are my favorite inspirational speaker, hands down. I also hate advice, especially in the form of "everyone should do this one thing," with a side of "if you're not doing it, you'll never succeed!"
just saw that you are the creator of patreon from a sailing la vagabonde video, and i remembered your name (and i think a few assembly performances) from way back in the day at st. mark's. small world! thanks for creating something that has changed a lot of people's lives for the better!
I haven't finished seeing that video yet and it is already the most inspirational one I have seen in years, I really thank you for that, I was really down, feeling stuck in my musicianship path but it gives me perspective, thanks again, I mean F*** you Jack !
The customized design-problem solving I think is totally brilliant. I gotta screen capture that list of questions, and tailor them a bit. That's exactly how my brain works too. I especially loved you talking about how writing helps you escape circular thought patterns. I'm going to explore that even more than I already was. Thank you so much for this. Helpful for me as a musician, a parent, and as a human in general.
A rare video keeping me focused for 35 minutes. Amazing speech! And I loved the creator lounge @ Cheer up charlies sponsored by Patreon this Sxsw. Wish i saw this speech live.
Personally, as a patron of several artists on Patreon, I still prefer the per-"thing" model. But I will concede that since many of the artists prefer the per-month schedule, it's a good option to have for them. I just hope you never get rid of the original option! That does still work best for many artists, for exactly the reasons you thought… and more. Great video! Advice, non-advice, everything. I actually think the part about figuring out what gets me into an inspired mood, and then intentionally replicating that, will help a lot. As for the rest, I don't think any of your "advice" was bad, and much of the other stuff is still good and relevant to me. But taking it all as those individual data points, and knowing it won't all be the right advice for myself , is, itself, great advice. ("Fuck you, Jack!") I think I'm fairly good at filtering out what's good for me and what isn't so relevant or applicable; but either way, I just like hearing about others' experiences, because it does give me data points to construct a better image of what I guess could be called "The Whole". So thank you for that; it's _all_ interesting and helpful, whether it's directly useful in my own situation or not.
it's totally a great idea, per thing. I'd even love a "tip jar", pick a thing, and drop money, no strings attached. per month is such a cold old model, I have no idea why anyone would want to add more suscription after energie, internet, taxes, yada yada. but hey it's me, glad it works. Glad if "per thing" or "tip jar" can exist too.
@@Journeymanlive Yeah, a tip jar would be cool… though, admittedly, for the ones I'm already supporting in a recurring commitment, I doubt I'd use it much. Maybe for others, though, that I don't support in the recurring model. And maybe even my regular ones now and then, like for the ones that I wish I could afford to give more regularly, but at least I could give them an extra bonus every once in awhile.
@@Dan-Black yes flexibility, dig it? drop something. I'm surprised about the monthy model being so prevalent, I guess we may now live in a world of routine, Netflix, and all things in boxes, pre-paid, link to you account. But there is no way I get some indie, traveller, crazy people to monthly subs. I love busking, and originally Patreon was kinda of that, digitally, like 2$ per song. GREAT original idea from Jack. Anyway the more ways to feed artists we like, the better.
One of the best videos I have seen on RUclips !!! and btw Jack... I use you as my inspiration machine... (along with Casey and GaryVee). Thank you for this video.... kind of validated all of the things that I've been figuring out and feeling lately.
🙏What an absolutely lovely talk. There’s a point in 40 weeks about how you value anything higher when it’s been hard to get to. A Big Mac has pretty low value, where a home cooked meal has much a higher value. To yourself of course. 40 weeks call it friction. The higher friction the higher value and enjoyment…
I shared this video to a lot of my folks saying „You really need to watch this - F*CK YOU, BEN (you’ll understand after watching the video)“ - I so much enjoyed watching this video! Thank you so much. I appreciate you for what you do! Before my next workshop or during my next inspiration crisis - I‘m gonna watch this as inspiration trigger ;)
Jack, I still remember learning that you're the creator of Patreon. I was a fan of your music at the time (still am). Love your work, hope to hear something from you in the future. Best of luck!
Jack I am only writing this because I think you will see it. I have drank your cool aid I believe in the second renaissance and I am leaving college next year with the goal of being a creator. You are allowing me to believe that there is a world out there that will pay for my art. Thank your and keep working hard. You will be hearing the band belmaus very soon.
This is really… interesting. I can’t think of a better way to describe it. I’ve had a lot of these notions and theories about many of your points but never as a whole (like you’ve presented). Awkwardly emotional moment for me as I write this, but thank you for putting this together… I think this video will really help me help so many more people by adding clarity to what it knew was out there. Thank you ….FU Jack 🥂
holy balls Jack, there is so much to say but ill leave you with a massive gratitute that won't be enough to encapsulate the importance of this talk. Thank you!
Do you guys (perhaps you specifically, Jack) have a second-in-command type or a COO type around you? Almost every part of what you're saying has been primary drivers of team burnout, or these sort of personally revelatory systems that you seem to have to come up with on your own to sustain the things you really want to do, and these questions you're asking yourself and the team around you... these are things that 2iC types do naturally and are energized BY. Actually, my co-author and I are writing a book we're calling "How to be Second" about people we call "Seconds" talking about those types of humans. (Tend to be more in the shadows, curious, generalist/operational, makes plans and processes, runs the stuff but wants someone with a big idea to inspire them, etc - think Batman and Robin as the dynamic duo and Alfred as the Second-in-command.) Curious if you've ever looked into that or have people like that around you.
I totally did not realize that Jack created Patreon! I've been a Pomplemoose follower for like 10 years! Love you guys! If you're still the CEO, can you explain why Patreon is essentially a platform that supports MAPs? There are some creators who have been kicked off for non hateful "hate speech" that wasn't actual hate speech, nor did it even take place on the Patreon platform, and yet there are creators still on there who are downright pedos and creeps. Make it make sense, Jack. Is this one of those custom design problems you can solve?
You are awsome... you defenitely made me more confident to be my self.... I hope one day I meet you and refer back to this comment, to prove and say: see I took your advice :)

Advice needs to be targeted with a knowledge of the individual you are giving it to, or sorted and processed by the individual along with all their other knowledge and advice received to see how it can be applied.
I have to disagree that per creation is inherently a bad idea. I like the idea for the very reason you outlined - creating on a schedule is intensely stressful, but I understand that the subscription model is a smart business decision.
i have never used Patreon because of the monthly fee. And I never will until they figure out their plan. Free and pay. Mixed feed free/pay. if you want watch the free content that’s available if you don’t wanna pay
