- The 2024 Dakar Rally is gearing up to be a thrilling spectacle of speed, endurance, and determination as the Red Bull Desert Wings squad prepares to tackle the challenging terrain of Saudi Arabia. The rally is scheduled to commence on January 5, 2024, and will encompass a grueling 5,000-kilometre racecourse divided into 12 challenging stages, with the grand finale taking place in Yanbu on January 19.
Team Audi Sport brings a formidable trio with a total of 17 Dakar titles between them. Carlos Sainz and Lucas Cruz, Stéphane Peterhansel and Edouard Boulanger, and Mattias Ekström and Emil Bergvist will pilot three Audi RS Q E-Trons, with fans eagerly anticipating their improvements and the FIA's adjustments to the 'Balance of Technologies' since their last desert showdown.

It's crazy during the 90' I was watching him winning all the Dakars on his bike when I was a kid, now we are in 2024 and he's still fighting for the lead...

Hybrid power introduces inefficiency and complexity. They should aim to go directly to fully electric. That´s the real engineering challenge.
So the car uses a serial hybrid system. Hope the Toyotas are going to bring their hybrid tech into the Dakar.

@@purwantiallan5089 afaik, it's a propulsion system that utilities an internal combustion engine as a generator to produce electricity which stored on relatively small battery package, that stored energy then used by an electric motor to drive the wheels.

I wouldn’t call it an hybrid. Its an electric car with a range extender. There is no power from the combustion engine going to the wheels, It only uses electric power.
Exactly. The engine is only there as a generator, like a diesel-electric train.
yet it still is a hybrid. Instead of being a parallel hybrid its a series one. The definition of hybrid means two types of energies are used.

Will they win? That's the question.
The Hilux proved to be just as fast and having better reliability than the Audi, and there's also Prodrive closely follows the Hilux in that area.
Unless they solve it then i presume we will see more suspension woes coming from them again this year.

How much less fuel consumption compared to the non hybrids?
20/30% the motor always run at 5k RPM if I am not mistaken, which is max efficiency for that engine in particular. So the motor acts like a range extender instead of a normal hybrid.
Isn't it just the same as the Odyssey 21 used in Extreme E? Sainz already familiar how it works since he also competed in Extreme E and they even raced in the deserts of Saudi Arabia. So he really does have an advantage right?

It is great engineering!! But is it reall e-car? I think you replaced clutch, gearbox and differentials by generator, wires and e-motor.

Car is very capable to win, problem is they have to much reliability issues mixed with some bad luck and a very strong GR Hilux
The problem the Audi's have is when they have technical issues it takes a long time to fix.

How do these internal relationships work? Such as audio and red bull being separate in f1 but not here
Outside F1, Red Bull is only a sponsor, probably the largest sponsor of some teams, but still only a sponsor. There's no technical contribution from Red Bull. Red Bull Advance Technologies can be hired as consultants, but that is a whole different story

Calling electrification to that system is like saying that a gasoline engine is electric because it uses spark plugs
It is still a type of electrification though and a concept that's been use like diesel-electric trains for example. Some small Nissan hatchbacks also uses the same concept.
Now calling it a hybrid on the other hand is what bugs me instead.
