The drummers timing is nothing less than incredible. And with a smile. All-in-all an outstanding performance.
I met back in the mid 2,000s. What a cool cat. Super easy going, very enlightening. True joy. The world will miss his brilliance.
That’s Herbie baby! Everyone’s top level!
The late Great Leon “Ndugu” Chancler 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
That's Ndugu Chancler on the drums.
PLEASE - percussionist question - hope someone can help me!
I can't really see the percussionist here, but I love the technique where, I believe, he licks a finger and slides it across the congas to make a tone - which really is essential to this groove (can be hear at 0:06, 0:10, 0:25 and similar pasts through the song). Does anybody know what this technique is called? Can't find it anywhere. Thank you!
Riding home after a night of partying and then put this in your car stereo. It's like gliding on air.
This song is a drummers bliss. Playing this is so much fun
I love the way Mr. Hancock gives so much space to all the players to do their thing!
Miles taught them all very well
He does, he has great faith in his fellow musicians and allows them the freedom to musically express themselves
@@daviwill5911 He certainly did
RIP Leon Ndugu Chancler and Wah Wah Watson both departing this realm 2018 you are missed !!!!
had no idea about wah wah watson until now. incredible rhythm player.
yes indeed Romulus sadly gone to soon and a great player
I've always been more of a RTF fan but DAM, Herbie put together something special here. RIP Wah-Wah and Ndugu ....
ive been listening to this song and vein melter several times a day for over a week now... its like vitamin c or like jumping into a cool pool on a hot day.... so refreshing.
One of my favorite jams from Mr. Hancock .... The Heavy Hitters on the stage is Mega Off The Chart Hands Down !!!
I've always been infatuated with the bass lines of this song. So groovy!
Those cymbals! Pure 80s.

Ndugu Chancler is in subtle beast mode on this! OMG!
This rendition is awesome and smooth. The Headhunters and Herbie, are unique and classics.
Butterfly is my second favorite song of all time....
Caterpillar the favourite?
@@muldercm Ha. :-)

I love how wah wah watson mixed his wah wah pedal with the reverb
Chancler is putting on a master class!
I have the honour of seeing Herbie later this year in ireland…. 12 years since I saw him here last time…. Best gig I have ever been to….
What a treat! Great version of a beautiful song! I’d like to have the entire concert on CD😎
The caliber of musicianship here is otherworldly
This is an amazing version
Love Bill Evans on sax! Underrated!
Pretty sure he plays the piano better.
@@Madinko12 you know that there are two Bill Evans's: the beast on piano, and the BEAST on sax.
@@ricaard there can't be two persons with the same name. How would you know who is who? 99% sure it's forbidden by law in most western countries.
@@Madinko12 it is indeed possible, and helps to support the multiverse theory and how we understand the Initial Singularity and internal inflation system...
It's Jimmy McGill, the famous lawyer !
All went together so well❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ one of my favorites.
That tempo is intense!
How can Jazz not start the most overwhehlming feelings you ever had ?!
Oh my goodness I'm in heaven hoooo ya❤️❤️❤️
And I'm staying home 👍👍👍
I've always been a Chick guy but this is outstanding. What a funky groove, Herbie has assembled a fresh supporting cast for Hedhunter's 2....
Are liking Chick and Herbie somehow mutually exclusive?
@@floofytown Not at all. They just happen to be my personal faves along with Zawinul when it comes to jazz kb players.
When it comes to rock/prog it's Emerson, Wakeman, Banks and Jon Lord....
@@Thundergod- you just like that mellowtron
In Love from very first note!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pure mastery !
Can’t imagine hearing this live! ❤
To a time of peace
That rendition alone belongs in the National Archives.
Just briliant
icredible performance !
Instruments really can talk, beautiful jazzy musical vibes playing. Bravo Herbie Hancock and Band Jazz performers !
That beautiful butterfly is flying blessed and peaceful! Thanks for an eargasmic performance Herbie Hancock. Salute King!🥰
Ndugu fluffs his fill at 9:55. His reaction is priceless! :D
And it was the slightest of fluffs too, I think. Just pushed it too much. But it is the measure of the level of musicianship these guys were playing at!?!? And you're right. A priceless reaction for real!

@@no_notes1229 It's called the Moose Call or Tumbadora
@@MarcelStranis perfect!! I see now it is also called glissando. I really want to use samples of that, and now I can search for it. THANKS!
@@no_notes1229 you're very welcome 😉
Wonderfull meeeeen, What a sound
Best music ever!
Hellava lineup on this joint!! Wah Wah, Ndugu and 20 something Darryl Jones on Bass, now playing with The Rolling Stones!!
DJ had already toured with Sting 2-3 years before this was recorded, with Omar Hakim, Kenny Kirkland and Branford Marsalis.
That’s right! Probably had toured with Steps Ahead and recorded with Scofield prior to this gig with Herbie?
Great Bassist!!!
I miss you Ndugu Chancler!
Great version of this song. Darryl Jones is a great bass player
🙌🏾🙌🏾
Ndugu is messing me up with this groove right now 🙌🏾🔥
RIP WAH WAH WATSON
RIP Ndugu Chancler, drummer. But they jammed!
@@kdbyers He played on another one of my all-time faves, Tale Spinnin' by Weather Report 1975....
@@Thundergod- check this out. These cats jammed. This is music! ruclips.net/video/MBAJP-3ebDA/видео.html
Even though I have heard & played this song ad infinitum-this has to be the very best performance of this song. Thank you for posting...

Incredible band! ✊🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Perfect band, music and times
Yes what type of gloves were shown on photo of bass player? Thick and thin, what are they made of ? Are they sold in music stores sold with gear ?
Drummer holdin’ it down
DE la Grande Musique ! Great musicians
Outstanding performance
RIP NDUGU
Great!!!!!
Fabulous, Fantastic, Far out, F#$K yeah!
Why Herbie NEVER took a cuban Conga player was Always a mistery to me !!!!

Best guitar solo in history
Meravigliosi
Bill Evans on the saxophone keys
😄🤣
5:15 hermoso
This is where the "dis is da drum" version came from. The sounds on this I prefer to the 70s sounds. Also that bass is beautiful
10:28 anyone else notice miles in the way that herbie plays the melody ahahah?
That was actually the sound sample he took of Mile’s trumpet during his last ‘Miles and friends’ concert. He actually played it back to miles while on stage.
A prelude to the live in Tokyo with Roy some fifteen years after...
Leon "Ndugu" Chancellor-Drums
noice Bill on the sax!

NICE! Very nice, but not the Headhunters I know.

Darryl Jones ?
Yes!

Looks like Darryl is playing a Sadowsky.
He can afford it
There’s a bit in this that sounds like the French Connection
Great performances all around. Just one distracting thought as I was listening to Herbie: his solo would’ve sounded better either on Rhodes or acoustic piano, rather than that sort of DX-7ish sounding patch he was using. But I guess it was the 80s. . . . . .

Hi, it's called "moose call".
If Frankie Lymon and Fats Domino had a kid, it would be Ngudu Chancler.
Long ago
Can anyone tell me what bass Darryl Jones is using here? I'm digging the solid blue body
Sadowsky BCLG.....
Could someone identify all the members of the band?
Herbie Hancock - Keyboards
