    Hello! I want to thank you for your videos. Almost a year ago I had a stroke and so the shaving pretty well had to go out the window. I stumbled onto your videos just a few days ago and had a thought. why not see if I am to a place in my recovery where I can shave again. Before my wife was having to groom my face with a trimmer, and I hadn't had a close shave in many months. I went out on Monday, bought a safety razor and some shaving soap and I now have maybe the closest shave I have ever had. I am tired, but I can do it!! I will use shaving every couple days as part of my recovery process. Thank you for your videos. I don't know if it is what you set out to do, but they have inspired me.

    *Great video Nick.*
    My list goes as follows:
    1. Feather
    2. Astra SP
    3. Voskhod
    4. Personna Lab Blue
    _IMHO_

    I regularly use and love the Personna Platinum razor blades. They feel very sturdy, well made, last a long time, and don't give you a bad razor burn if you're not careful. Still, my favorite blades are the Astra SP, they're a bit sharper than the rest of the "average" ones and can give you a bad shave if you're not careful, but I like how they feel on my skin. Although, they tend not to last for too long and can get some rust on the surface after a few shaves.

  • @itoldjaso
    @itoldjaso 2 года назад +1

    Personna seems to make two varieties of blades; In the red packaging are blades that are less sharp than in the blue packaging, but better suited to sensitive skin------Personnas in the blue packaging that you featured are as you stated: sharp, smooth, efficient and a pleasure to shave with------As always, your mileage may vary.

  • @flewggle

    I use Personna blues. I get a very close shave and they really are smooth. I never get razor burn or a cut. I just use regular old barbasol shaving cream. I can get 3 shaves out of a blade.

    Got stuck in the mindless rut of using disposable razors and kidding myself that I was getting a decent, economical shave until recently when I decided to start doing things properly. After some RUclips research, I settled on the Edwin Jagger DE89 and following a tip from this video, I paired that razor with the Gillette 7 O'Clock blade. I can only say that this particular combination gave me a fantastic two pass shave. It was a comfortable, easy, light pressure, extremely close shave. And that was with 6 days growth. Thank you for the really helpful video..

    Nice choices Nick, I'll definitely be trying some of the perma sharp blades. I don't get access to all those blades in the Caribbean (over the counter, you have to import) but my favorites over the counter is the Wilkinson sword. Nice balance for me and they seem to last a long time, sometimes I get like 5-6 shaves with them.

      RICHARD Clark go for them, they're very good, and if you like SPs (like me), you should love them. They're maybe fractionally sharper, but like Nick said, they're still smooth

      @thelsamar23 7 лет назад

      Yeah, was surprised as well. Probably my favourite blade. Perma-sharp are great blades as well, but I feel like Feathers are better since they are sharper and with good technique you will get the best out of those with no problem at all.

      How strange, I feel exactly the opposite. I did not get along with the Astra blades and love love love the Personna. For me the Personna is better even than the Feather

  • @stevem1563
    @stevem1563 7 лет назад +3

    I also like Debby Extras. I know many say they are junk, but they are mild and smooth for me in my R41 and I get great shaves. To each his own, but I really like them, irregardless to what many others claim. I think they are slightly smoother then the Personna Blues but very similar.

      I'm new and running through a sampler. I thought Derby or Shark might be the razor for me, but the problem is they don't get the job done with coarser hair around my mouth and chin. Silky smooth on the sides but struggle with the goatee area. So far Wilkinson Sword and Astra Platinum have been the best. I have high hopes for Voskhod, Pol Silver, and Persona. I suspect Feather may be too sharp. I'm saving that until I'm more experienced so I don't mangle my face.

    I'm super late to this, but i have recently (late summer to autum 2019) started wet shaving. The razor I used is still my Vanderhagen, and the blades I have been using for the longest time have come from dollar general, which research tells me are offbrand Dorco blades.
    I was receny forced to look elsewhere for blades and grabbed me a sample pack. The astra blades were sharp, but most def not smooth. Then I tried Personna Blues. OMG. I'm gonna work my way through the different brands, but unless i get a better shave, I am going full Personna. Maybe I'll even try a red.

    Took me a month to find the right combos of blade a razors, I shave Daily have course hair with sensitive skin. I Don’t shave on my weekends but, every day after that. It’s a 34C HD with a Feather blade on day 1 to eliminate the growth and Personna blade every day after that. Winning combo! Finding the right razor and blade for your skin/hair type is cumbersome yet rewarding when u find it.

    7 o'clock Super Stainless are my current favourite, but I am still working through a big sampler pack. Before that I was only using Astra SP and they are "OK" but I find they are tuggy sometimes and I have to be very careful on my neck with them. The 7 o'clock Super Stainless seem to cut through the hair better and are also very smooth. Very little irritation on my neck. The 7 o'clocks also seem to last considerably longer. Still have about 20 more blades to try. Thanks for your great reviews!

      hmmmm I really like Astras and this make me asks, if you were to compare the below what would you say? I have corase and dense hair and have a bit of sensitive skin sometimes
      Astra green
      Gillette NACET
      Dorco
      Feather
      the R41 is a bit of challenge and apparently it is due to my pressure having grown a beard for mostly the past couple of years so my technique got affectted
      I noticed I tend to have good resutls with Merkur slant bar and the Dorcos are good for 1 use and if i 2-3 with them i get a bit of necks
      I haven't done the conculsion about this theory yet but I am noticing

    Astra's are king for me as my go to blade, they really are the perfect balance of sharpness and smoothness, plus, I have a very thick, coarse beard. They works very well in my Muhle R41 and my less aggressive razors as well, all around, they are amazing. I do love Feathers and Kai equally. Voskhod are tuggy for me, however I have about 300 of these babies, so being the cheap guy that I am, I will eventually use them up. When I use up all of my other blades, I will only use Astra and Feather.

    Great review. and for the most part I agree.
    I'm not a fan of the Feather Blades, tried them and just did think they were for me... they're very sharp, seem to perform nest on the the second use and then kinda crap out on they third use. I actually like the ASTRA Superior Platinum blades better. I try and use various blades from Wilkinson, Viking and others. But the Personna Lab Blue Comfort Coated are the best of both worlds... comfortable and sharp, just not too aggressive. Furthermore, I have very tough bristly whiskers and the Personna Lab Blue blades give me four great shaves rather then two.
    That just me, everyone should use what works best for them.
    Blessings to you and yours, and take care. Aho!

  • @MegaAluchi

    I have been experimenting with different blades and shave soap. My beard didnt like neither Astra nor Derby.
    The Treet black is called carbon, and it is one of my favourite. But it is good for only two shaves one on each side before they become dull. My beard is medium coarse and I shave every second day on setting 6 of my Viking Emperor adjustable razor.
    There are many Treet models. One of their worst is Treet Platinum ( not for coarse beard.)
    I have tried both the Persona and Feather and I couldn't tell the difference. Both are equally great and provide smooth shave.
    The worst is 7'O'Clock the yellow ( not in this video,) it gave me Nicks and irritation.
    Bic is also awsome by the way.
    I will try Voskood based on your video next time
    Thanks

    Absolutely fantastic video post Nick. Thanks heaps.
    Personally, I would have to add ASTRA Green to the list as (in my opinion) this has to be, hands down, the most versatile blade. I can use them in the Edwin Jager DE89 and the Merku Futur (on setting #6) and get a great shave.
    Thanks again Nick!

    I started shaving with my shavette about 2 years ago. Started out with feathers, then began to use safety razors ocassionally, haven't really tried much other than feathers, was given some Gillette platinums from a friend and they weren't nearly as sharp and seemed to not give as close of a shave as with the feathers, I might give the perma sharps a try, and possibly the personna. I'm just not sure how I feel about a duller razor blade, but I shall see.

    Lab Blue > Feather > Astra SP > Polsilver > Permasharp are my favourites.

I am new to this and have a future coming. I have fair and sensitive skin. I am also on blood thinners. If you or a reader sees this. What would be a mild shave for softer kinda hair with an intolerance to being nicked? Cause that would just be a big hassle as I cannot stop the bleeding being on a blood thinner. p.s when I leave this video, I won't know how to find it for answers. so hopefully someone can sen me a personal you tube message....Old guy that doesn't get technology. Hey Nick,
    You should do a video on inexpensive blades that get the job done. It is a tough market because you can get a lot of crappy blades. I remember buying a 100 pack of Derbies and finding out how much they suck. The russian blades seem to be the best bang for the buck. I use Rapira Platinum Lux and actually prefer them to Feathers. Less cuts and as long as I switch them regularly, there is no tug.

    I agree that this has been the best for me as well, with the added bonus of being made in the USA. they don't last longer than others for me, but I don't have to pay any mind to how I'm shaving in my case. that said I don't have terribly sensitive skin

    Agree with your picks, but PolSilver SI's deserve a mention. Sharp but forgiving (similar to Perma-Sharps, but for me more smooth). Adding Treets to my list for aggressive razors. Thank you

      Polsilver is the smoothest of the sharper tier blades I've tried, but I personally don't benefit from the extra sharpness. Moderate sharpness of Voskhod gets down to the skin for me and at 7 cents per blade is less than 1/5th the price of Polsilver. If I had coarser hair, I'd get Polsilver but am glad I don't need to pay over 500% more per blade.

    Thanks for a very well done review. You're very thorough with your descriptions and you've taken a good amount of mystery out of the various brands available. I'm finally back to wet shaving after a 20 year period of having a beard. I don't like the multi-blade razors that are commercially available as I think of them as being nothing more than playthings. I have gone back to what I know best and that's the double edge safety razor. Your reviews have been very helpful for me as I, once again, have returned to a clean shaven face. Keep up the good work and thanks, again.

      sharpness is about the same, the Polsilver is smoother. I use a Razorock SLAB which is pretty mild but also very efficient almost like an Edwin Jagger DE89 but with a wider gap

      Voskhod has given me the best results and very fortunately happens to be among the least expensive. Polsilver is also of superb quality but cost over 5x more and are sharper than necessary to get down to the skin for me. Glad I don't have steel wool facial hair and only need a moderately sharp blade for a super smooth shave.

      I don't agree with the choice of the Feather at all. Considering it's the most expensive, I don't think it's a great perfomer. It's almost unusable in a Futur. I think the Wilkinson Sword (Germany version), and Gillette Silver Blue or Gillette 7 O'Clock Yellow sharp edge are better blades for the money. Overall, my favorite now is the Polsilver SI.

      I'm not even that crazy about a Feather in an EJ89. It degrades after 4 or 5 shaves and the first shave is really somewhat rough. I have a tough beard and sensitive skin on the neck (my stubble grows down to my collarbone!). I get about 2 or 3 decent shaves with a Feather but not the smoothest by far. Remember that Nick doesn't shave XTG or ATG on the neck, so he won't experience any irritation and can't distinguish which blades cause the biggest problems during those passes.

    Tried the persona platinum in my EJ DE89 and I wasn't impressed maybe a bad blade? but it felt harsh on my skin which resulted in some irritation, its only my third blade tryout after the Derby extra and Astra SP I guess my search for the best possible blade continues

    I think it's a bit unfair not to include SP blades...btw, I use Astra SP and Gillette SP (Black) blades alternatively and I find them exactly the same. I have sensitive skin and I'm very good at noting the differences between the blades..But these two are absolutely same, just manufactured in different countries.
    If you have time may be you can do a detailed comparison between the two, putting them under the lens and checking there thickness as you did for Rapira blades sometime back...

      Agreed. Kai is a great blade! Almost as sharp as Feather but quite a bit smoother. The only problem is that Kai blades are a hair larger than many other blades so they don't fit the same as most other blades.

    I like the Personna Lab Blue but I think the Gillette Sliver Blue give a better close/smooth shave.
    The Voskhod for me are just not sharp enough. I don't really like to have to make 3 passes to get a smooth shave. The Voskhod blades take 3 plus a touch up for me.
    I'm new to safety razor shaving so I haven't tried the feather yet, would you suggest getting more experience or just go for it?

  • @SaltySeaDaddy
    @SaltySeaDaddy 5 лет назад

    Nick, question. The Treet Black Beauties, would you say they perform better in the R41 and or an open comb? Looking for the perfect 'used' blade feel. What would you recommend?
    I started doing two pass shaves. First pass with the R41 and a Voskhod and second pass the R106 with a 'used' Feather blade. I'm 6 mos into the DE world. 10 razors, 12 brushes, and countless soaps later...blah, blah...
    I'm in search of a blade that gives a good 'used' feel to it. Primarily I use Feather, Voskhod and Astra. Feather is still feared and respected. Looking forward to the Black carbon steel Treet. Glad I subscribed to your channnel.
    BTW, you're reviews are high end in my book. You, Paulhfilms, Geofatboy, ilather, and Kensurfs in that order are my faves! Always learning from your experiences my good man. Again, thank you for your time and effort. Hoo-YAH MOTIVATOR!
