When fishing with the fly rod my friend . When you have a FISH ON.. use you right hand index finger to hold your line when you set the hook. Then when it’s hooked let’s go to get the line tight to the reel then start reeling while hover that index finger over the line as well holding the pole brother!! Just my tip I use when I go fly fishing. Maybe it should help
It's a shiner
The fish was a Willd shiner wild golden shiner
when you have a fish on, from what i can tell you use your right hand to hold you line while pulling the line in with your left hand
Smalls you , ayo, Davy, and norm should form group and become the Amp of fishing yall are funny af
3 daddies in one video 😩💚
🤣🤣
Love googan squad

Dude davey gravy has come such a long way with being comfortable in front of the camera. It’s so fun seeing in get so excited in the videos and communicate with the audience!
That mystery fish from Walmart was a giant shiner, I think.
WHEN THE WHOLE GANG UPLOADS THE SAME DAY WOOOOOOOOO 🔥🔥🔥
You know its going to be a good-day
No doubt!
@@fishingwithsmallsexcept Norm. Can you confirm or deny my theory that he forgot he's RUclips login. Or my other theory that he has a non compete with Googan and can't post for a certain amount of time?
I really don't care either way because you three are hilarious. Also don't buy the time share.
I don't see a new video from Ayo? I like his vids lol. I like the whole gangs vids
Does Davey have a channel ?
so just a tip: when you are retrieving your fly. keep some of the line pinned in your casting hand. (I usually just pin it down with my pointer finger)and pull it in with your non casting hand. idk if that makes sense. but instead of reeling it in. you pull in your lure . then reel in if you catch a fish. it is tons of fun when you get the gang of it. dont give up on it yet. ive been fly fiahing since i was like 8. and it does get easier
This comment! I keep the float line pinned with my casting pointer finger, I also don’t use the reel unless I have a fish pull all of my loose line out and I control the drag with pressure from my reeling hand. I haven’t fly fished in a long time but I want to get back into it.
My fav group of non-caloric challenged people...I feel at home. Your mystery fish was a large Shiner, a big one.
when casting stop the rod at 10 and 2 and pinch the line with your index finger on your rod hand to help with line control. bass fishing on the fly is a blast in fact anything caught on a fly rod is so much more enjoyable than regular tackle.
This. 👆the only thing I might add to this is don’t be so concererned about your reel. If you keep it pinched with your right index finger. The fish will run out to your reel. Or you’ll retrieve the fish by pulling the line behind your right index finger that’s so your progress is captured. Fly is so satisfying when you get a good hook set.
Shinner. Bass candy 😁 Remember this spot for future live bait challenges. They ... Get ... Munched!!!😄😄😄👍👍👍
Shiner*
Love you boys trying out the fly rods. If you ever want to outfish anyone for anything (panfish, trout, bass in winter, etc) the most effective thing to do is fly fish with an indicator and a ‘balanced leech’ fly.
Outfished my buddy for crappie by catching 23 fish while he only caught one trying different traditional crappie lures.
I’ve also caught 5 pound largies on them in the winter, size 12 tiny little leeches.
Awesome info!
It's crazy seeing bass crush tiny flies.
The little fish was a shiner
Golden shiner
No it was a whitefish
That was my thought but honestly never seen one grow to that size. So many cool fish down south. Mn boy myself so I just get tortured by shitty regs and weather
Make sure your line is running out of the front of the reel up by the rod. It looks like you and Gravy had your line coming from the bottom behind that metal cage.
Looked like a golden shiner
Never caught one personally, but that'd be my guess too.
There's just something so satisfying about catching a fish of any size on the fly. Even 2 oz bluegill feels like an accomplishment!
Will give some tips. Casting is something to watch some videos on. Mad River outfitters is the best option. For the fighting real quick tip is when your done casting put the line under your finger on your rod hand and pull the line in with your off hand.
Also google if there is a fly shop in your area and please make a video of going in there and getting the low down from some experts. Awesome collab to show off a local business
27:04 it’s a wild (golden) shiner aka bass candy they have no spines like pan fish and are a easy meal
I'd love to go salmon fishing in Alaska on a charter boat with these three guys right here
Good job, those were sweet blowups on the frog! The biggest thing that will help now that you've got the casting down is using your index finger of your right hand to guide the line during the retrieve and if you get a bite use that finger to squeeze the line against the rod, modulating the pressure if you need to, like drag would. Then when you are bringing the fish in you pull line with the left hand then hold with the right finger to allow you to pull more line. Hope you get out again with the boys, I bet a striper on a fly rod would be crazy haha
Smalls you are awesome for learning to fly fish! I have a old fly rod and I am going to dust it off and giver a try. Keep up the good work Smalls.
I wish I could fish with you guys in real life, I'm laughing along with your guys's jokes from home as if I'm really there 😂
Really hope you guys keep going with the fly fishing nothing more electric than a river bass on the fly rod.
Good job Smalls. I love the content you put out, you keep it real. Keep up the fun....
Davy Gravy single handedly makes a good video
You know it's going to be a good time when you have these three going fishing, congrats on getting Davey casting something besides a Zepco, he is the Legend. Congratulations Smalls on catching with a Fly Rod. 🎣
Springfield,Mo checking in , the Og home of Bass Pro
Right there with ya
That's awesome! I appreciate you both!
Now Gravy sounds like a real Bama fan. lol Gravy and dip has to be funny
Man I have lines that are more than 100$. Great work.
To be fair, those cricket rods are amazing. That bighorn was my first fly rod, but cabellas brand.
“Now AYO you can catch him driving real fast”😂😂😂😂😂
What's up guys I have to say the three guys in this video are by far my favorite RUclips fishing group. Yalls videos really make my days so so much brighter any time y'all feel like coming to good old Tennessee middle Tennessee to be exact I'd love to show y'all a few places to catch the fat Sally's it would be cool as crap to fish with either one of y'all mainly Davey lol thanks for doing everything yall do keep it up
We appreciate you!
Smalls is going to end up a GOAT! You couldn't possibly do any better than Ayo and Davy Gravy!!!
Couldn’t be happier opening up my RUclips to watch a new smalls video!! LETS GOOOOO
OMG LMAO great video BUD, now I can say I saw Smalls catch his first Fly fish you killed it man.
I’m glad the gang is finally doing a fly fishing challenge!
CAST THE LINE... makes sense...
GO GRADY!!!!
Davey SO confident these days!
Good to see ya, Smalls! Keep it up!
This was super fun to watch. Smalls knowledge of fishing is amazing. Kinda guy I would want to learn from.
Idea for vid. Biggest catfish 1v1v1, with homemade bait from the grocery store?
Awesome video SMALLS. As you strip you line in hold line with your pointer finger and use it like a brake but the line you strip in just lays on ground The fish you didn’t know was a Golden shiner aka( Bass candy). Always a great time and a lot of fun when Smalls, Davey and Ayo get together. Yall stay safe and Smalls keep doing what you do. Keep’em coming
I have such a long road ahead with a fly rod 🤣 I appreciate the support!
@@fishingwithsmalls You did really good for being your first fly fishing. It does take some time to get use to it but it is a lot of fun I like catching crappie on fly rod I use just a small hook and a jig skirt. I made some flies out of yarn made some out of deer hair too . Tying your own flies and then catching a fish on it is a great feeling.. But really enjoy your videos and you keep it all real. Just keep doing what you do..
Yea yea my kinda of fishing…madness uncertainty and danger😂😂 love the vid and keep on fishing my mans, it’s happening for ya and we are all here for the ride👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I'm sure you thought cut some footage but were here for you not just your fishing success. You could have totally added more of Davies pond and maybe even consider behind the scenes videos
Ordered a pair of those ear buds and can't wait to try them out. Love the videos with Ayo and Davey Gravey! Keep em comin!
I'm sure there have been a bunch of comments before this but, some tips that help me with fly fishing:
Keep the excess line under your index finger of your right hand on the rod. Pull more line than you think you need for the cast. While casting load the line backwards by stopping the line with your left hand on the back swing and let go as you come forward. Keep the fly above the water each forward and back. When you are casting above where you want to finally cast then let go with your left hand to lay the line out on the water. Put the line through your right index finger as an eyelet and pull with your left hand to bring it in. Leave the line pooled at your feet and repeat. When you hook a fish don't worry about reeling just use your right index finger as a drag. If you catch something huge let it run until your line is out and then play it with the reel. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.
Its always a great day when you get these 3 amazing boys in a video
Ayo better watch out. Smalls be putting out bangers
The Fishy Trinity: AYO, Davy Gravy, and Smalls!
Well done lads good to see you all together
BEST TRIO ON RUclips
Quad we need norm and yakpak
@@Chronicoverburnquad is 4, have to be quint I believe.
haven't been fly fishing in a while, but what i remember, first kinda incorrect thing, is you dont want to vertical cast with a fly rod, you more want to keep the rod in line with the shoulder of your casting arm at like 30to60 degrees. 2nd, when you cast you want your drag fairly lose that way when you build up your momentum it can actually spool some of the line off the reel to help you cast further, and lastly as you are standing waiting for the fish to bite/reeling them in use one of your fingers on your hand as a semi eyelet to help guide the line back onto the spool.
48 hour cook and eat challenge on ayo's house boat. MAKE IT HAPPEN!
Love how ayo just put the rod back and grabbed the next one lmao
Alligator snapping turtle catch and cook? I say yes! My family at the 35lber and it was gooood , can you tell I was raised in Florida ?😊
Buckle up everyone, Smalls is about to LEVEL UP this channel! This is single-handedly the best thing to hit the internet since the legendary "Charlie bit my finger". Get ready for greatness folks!
Your retrieve.....use you right index finger to hold the line to the pole as a "brake" reach up with your Left hand and pull more line down letting go with your right finger......repeat. Or hold your line in your right index finger til you can reel in your excess line then play the fish like a spinning reel. Hope it helps.
Let’s Go!! Good to see the crew together. Let’s get this man to 50k subs. Let’s Go!!
Smalls is getting swole!! Keep crushing brotha. Looking good!🤙🏻
I have been begging for this from you guys for years!
This was hard to watch, but also the best thing to see. Seems like you guys had a blast. Fly fishing and fly tying are so fun. Catching a 10lb carp on a rod made for trout no more than 18" is unreal. Catching fish with your creations is twice as satisfying. Being able to customize baits to the finest details is game-changing. And flies produce insane numbers of fish. I want you guys to experience that.
Tenkara is easy, effective, versitile, and you can fish a lot like you would with conventional gear. Streamers, poppers, jigs. The presentation is super subtle. Belgian cast and bow-and-arrow are the only casts you really need, and you can learn them in 10 seconds. Fly casting isn't any harder than casting a baitcaster, and tenkara is easier than either. Good entry point to fly fishing.
Sorry for the book, thanks for the video, and I hope this helps someone. High quality, low budget recommendations below.
Angler Dream 12ft tenkara rod $60, size 3.5 level line(years worth) $17, 5x tippet $7-$15, foam line holder $1.50
Maxcatch 1wt-4wt $60-70, Angler Dream fly reel $30 preloaded.
Bass Pro Shop sells a St Croix Mojo Bass 9wt fly rod/reel combo for $270
Smalls ,AYO, Davey Gravey don't get no better than that love your channel Smalls you a cool dude would love to hang out with you guys that's on my bucket list keep on rocking on
@fishingwithSmalls, I usually let the line run through my index finger on the hand that's holding the fly rod. When you catch one, you pull with your line hand and grip the line with your rod hand when you need to grab more line.
Quickly becoming one of my favourite YT channels. Keep it up, Smalls!
As a fly fisherwoman who fly fishes for bass all the time, this was very entertaining 😁Let me pitch you a video idea: fly fishing for peacock bass, LM bass and various species in Florida.
Use your index finger to keep the fly line pressed against the cork, you get the feel of the pull when the fish takes, you can then just let the fly line run, held with tension, between the cork and your index finger, you get use to putting on more or less pressure. Stops that birds nest you're getting on the reel, as you'll be holding the fish when playing and can then run the loose fly line through your pinky finger and the next, to get the spare line back on the reel.
use your index finger to hold the line between the reel and your extra line. then when casting release your index.
When not casting and you’re retrieving, use your finger to stop the line from slipping and when you reel in
My guy! Love the fly content! Please do more of this
Definitely some of the best content on RUclips right now!
That means the world. I appreciate you!
I loved this: "You know how carp like corn and corn is yellow"? "I am using my noggin over here"
Keep at it. I remember when I picked up my first fly rod from academy. I fell in love with the challenge of learning to cast the thing
Couple words of advice for next rrip. Best liter not for a novice is called a nailless nail knot. Easy to tie. Flies for ponds look for small poppers and or steamers. Something a littlt bigger than you'd think. It'll help first rime out.
Hi, I'm from the northern states and I fly fish alot for trout and bass and wanna try muskie, but I will say when your "stripping" or pulling ur bait in, you should pull the line to your rod had so you can hang on and lock it with ur forefingers while still gripping the rod. You can "strip" a fish all the way in like that.
I admire the care in daveys eyes as he asks to be on a separate bank
Nice to see you all try try out fly fishing. It's definitely addicting. I still fish spin/casters as well but fly rods are a good tool to have in the box.
that mystery fish was a big GOLDEN SHINER i just caught one the other week at my lil creek I was hyped up
Would definitely love to see more fly fishing videos
I love fly fishing on the river! Haven’t used a fly in a LONG time! Yall gonna make me wanna dust off my fly rod 😄
I’ve caught carp on fly rod before using a white dry fly. Down where I live the carp come up and eat vegetation and cotton off the water. It’s pretty cool to get one on the fly rod and the fight is fun.
dude - when ayo grenaded that reel in the store = i busted out laughing!
Zebco with a fly....you go davey
Use a water bobber and u can cast flies the any rod & reel
You fellas should road trip to the white river. I recommend it once in life. The white river starts at bulls shoals lake.
Just a tip make sure you have the line coming off the reel correctly. It needs to be under the cross bar on the front so it is coming off behind that bar. You casting a control of the fly and fish will be a lot better.
ive only watched the intro and im pissing myself laughing already, love it.
Golden Shiner! REALLY GOOD catfish bait!! Dead, alive, whole or cut!!!!
Always worth getting a lesser n. I didnt and it took me nearly 20 years to catch my first trout.
Caught myself a few times. But nothing feels better than a decent brown trout on the fly
Never have I subscribed to a channel after watching the ad, until now😂😂
The $50 WR fly combos ain't bad. Our fly pro recommends them to folks new to the sport all the time.
There are several HUGE grass carp in the pond behind my parents. The only way they'll bite at anything is if you make them angry but I havent figured out how to do that with them being so skiddish. Only person I've known to catch one was Dad and that was about 20 years ago on a nightcrawler. He said I'm gonna scare these fish and then miraculously pulled in a 2 ft long carp on 8lb test.
Fly fishing’s a blast once you get the hang of it! You should check out a tenkara rod for fly fishing, it’s a lot easier because you have a fixed line and don’t have to worry about the reel because there isn’t one!
You got to use your right index finger to hold the line while you use your left hand to pull it in
Use one of your fingers on ur casting hand to hold the fly line and have the slack behind that. So then if you get bit you have the tension of your grip as the drag.
“These ones are tiny”. As a trout guy, those are big lol. Love it.
Canal I grew up next to in South Florida was full of those big shiners (aka shad?). Haven't seen one in years, cool to see yours!
that dip of jerky chew had gravy all fired up
Turtle catch and cook would be AWESOME!
I have done a little fly fishing. Got me a new fly rod this year. Got mine on clearance.
Heck yes man I need this right now! Best content on the tube!!!!!
wooly buggers work just about everywhere. Betts poppers are decent as well.
It’s like Rodman, pippen and Jordan
I would watch this again just to listen to you guys shop in BP again.
Dude when turtle is cooked the right way it's absolutely amazing !!!
Gravy has to have that hat made into his trademark . Love the vids. Awesome Hat Davey!
Checking in from the bass pro at the tn-ga line and their fly fishing section is akin to your rich friends living room. I’d call it 20x30ft of floor space
