Wow love your packaging, I've been trying to find some ideas for my etsy shop as well. Since I make jewelry I try to make my packaging look professional and cute :)
I’m impressed! You’re product and approach are opposite to mine so I admire your efficiency. My process uses 100% re-used packing materials, never new store-bought. I sell heavy pottery and dishes so the time spent wrapping can be an hour. And sourcing used bubble wrap and boxes takes time as well. But it’s worth it, I want to walk lightly. Actually, I do buy packing tape for the exterior box. Interior wrapping is tied with twine and fabric strips.
Hi Brie! New friend here! I really enjoyed this video. It's great to see what other shop owners do for their customers. Thanks for showing your process and what to look for when ordering. 😊
Love this video! Thanks for the inspiration. May I ask a question? Wondering after all the packaging is done, what the profit is? I'm researching on how to start my Etsy store, but I'm concerned with what the end profit will be after supplies, packaging and shipping. Any advice is appreciated!
There will always be a start up cost using this video as an example if you had to buy the printer, storage computer programs ECT. and to get started from there how pricing is figured out is pretty simple you divide the cost by the count so say the card stock she uses is 5 dollars a pack and there's 50 sheets per pac so divide cost of 5 dollars by the count of 50 it comes out to .10 so every peice of card stock she uses is ten cents towards the cards appear to use two sheets each. so every card made uses 20 cents in supplies plus glue and ink ECT. For simplicity sake let's say every product is 10 cents so you have two sheets for the card, the shipping box, the shipping label, the inner chipboard, the thank you note, business card, and it appeared there was a clear protective covering on the card. So that's 8 items used at ten cents a peice so it costs 80 cents plus enough to cushion the supplies like printer ink glue the washi tape ECT so round it up to a dollar used to make each card so she wants to profit 2 dollars from each card sold she can then add her cost of 1 dollar to that so in this scenario she would charge 3 dollars per card hope that makes sense its literally just sitting down and crunching numbers this applies to any type of bussiness
Love how you package these! It seems like quite a big expense though? All the little extras add up? I’d love to add more to my packaging but it takes up a huge portion of profit.
Thank you for the nice compliment! There is an expense, but that expense add values to the packaging which I value. There is still a profit to be made, so I think it's a win-win.
Love your packaging super cute!!! Do you like Cannon Pixma for make cards? i bought mine I'm i feel is off colors :( pls let me know your experience, for I return it
hi there, thank you for the nice compliment! Most of my cards I have ordered through a local printer. However, for new designs I like to make the cards with the Canon Pixma Pro until I know if they are going to sell or not. I have been able to get accurate colors, but it was a LOT of trial and error. The thing that made the most difference for me was choosing the correct paper type in the print settings menu. Hope this helps and good luck!
Thank you very much, I appreciate your prompt response, and yes, I will try again and again and like you say, I think the trick is choosing the right paper.
@@bybrie hi..I just wanted to chime in and say that I am working with an Epson printer, but found this video to be a life saver when it comes to matching colors: ruclips.net/video/roWAfDfyCTA/видео.html Puts the matching responsibility on the printer vs you figuring out the settings. This is super cute! I like how careful you are, only thing I’ll suggest it’s that I think you are using way too much paper that’s probably gonna be on a trash can, an so the plastic bag can be replaced for a paper one? Just random thoughts, great video!
Hello! Thanks for the comment. The reason that I use the plastic bag is so that if the packaged gets wet, the card is protected. If I was going to switch, I would just get rid of the plastic bag completely, but the card would be at risk of being damaged.
I love how you attach the card to the chipboard. It's added protection for the edges.👍 But I'm wondering if people know that's your business card and not just a brand label? I personally don't think I'd peel the washi tape all the way off, to discover your info on the back of the card. Sending lots of love ❤ from sunny 🌅 Arizona.

Do you print the labels directly from Etsy and then just drop them at the post office? If so how to u print them on the label printing machine? Great video btw! From another Etsy seller
Yes, directly in Etsy's dashboard you have the option to purchase shipping after an order is purchased. They make it really easy with a click of a button. You then fill out the appropriate information such as the package dimensions and weight. Then, you can print out the label either on actual labels (like the ones I used in the video), or on a sheet of paper that you can tape to the order. Since my orders are small enough to fit in the mailbox, I will usually leave them there! If I have a bigger order, then I will drop them off at the post office.
Saw this looking for ideas for my online shop. Really good thoughts here. Thank you. With the tape - you can buy a dispenser that cuts it to a pre set size for not much. May save you a bit of time?
Awesome, thanks for watching! Yes, I’ve tried washi tape dispensers but unfortunately they didn’t work because the tape I use is a lot thinner than the normal kind 😕
looks beautiful! i saw you also have a serious printer, you print everything at home? what printer do you use? also - i love using stamps, i think you can make a do not bend one and it will save you some time :) beautiful i also liked the way you organized every product, very inspiring!
Thank you so much! I use a Canon Pixma Pro-100: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0095F5BCS/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=shopbybrie-20&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B0095F5BCS&linkId=8579ab1c45ecf5d183900c8d057b68f9 Stamps is a great idea!
Also, do you print your own cards and postcards, or do you have them printed? I have a card line, but have them printed. I also box them in orders of 12. So sending a box out (plus a free bonus gift, notebook and pen set and a bookmark), it's pricey to mail. Just trying to find ways around the high price of postage.
Jibooty_army hmm, I don’t really know what Royal Mail is, sorry! The “printer” you see me using for the labels is called a thermal printer and doesn’t use ink, which is nice! You aren’t required to purchase shipping labels through Etsy, but if you do, you get a discount.
Those thank you cards are adorable! It would be awesome if you could washi your note on to those so they could reuse the thank you note. Free advertising for you if they do. :)
If you include thank you cards, I feel like you should leave them blank. You have added cost by having them in there but if you leave them blank, customers can reuse them. It would cut down on packaging time, it’s an added bonus for the customer, they know you mean thank you for a purchase, your buisness info gets passed on, it’s more eco friendly, and the cost would instead be considered in terms of customer acquisition. Just a thought.
I thought all of these things, too. As a sustainability junkie I feel a hand written card that will probably go into the trash for most customers is just... well. A bit sad, even though it's a nice touch. The card itself is lovely idea but please leave it blank!
As a customer I keep any type of handwritten card I get and am more happy and elated to spread a businesses information in seeing the time put into each customer.
@@myca2746 I think you're missing the point. You don't have to defend her. No one's hating or being rude here, just giving some constructive criticism which all us small business owners tend to be thankful for.
is it cost efficient to be adding all those extra stickers ? It seems like a lot of little things being added bring up the cost to produce and time spent. I never made stickers or anything so I don't know the cost to make so I'm just wondering if after everything there is any profit to actually be made? I also know etsy charges so that also takes from the profit. Not sure if you have a video made on this already you can link. If not maybe a new video for you to make if you want.
Thanks for the comment! I think I will make a video on cost breakdown. There’s definitely a profit to be made, but yes you are cutting into that cost if you choose to include add on details, such as stickers.
I noticed you are selling to retail stores, and thought that was great. Are you thinking of one day going big? (With a printer to do the products, or do you want to stay small and home-based? It was very nice to see your efforts as I work on my own. I think I came across your shop story with an Etsy article, but I won't swear to it! :-) I thought your shipping costs must be high, but I noticed at Amazon that you charge 3.50 so I guess it isn't. I'm working out my feelings on Etsy's free shipping promotion as I try to build up my own options again. I am trying drop-shipping. Have you tried it? I hope you do well this holiday season... or as well as you want to do. I think we all have to decide what level of "success" we can live with. :-)
Hi Deborah! Thanks for the comment! I actually have my cards printed at a local printer (I only produce my stickers in-house). The price of shipping is literally the price of shipping. I'm not making any money off of it. When I purchase shipping through Etsy, I do get a small discount which is great to cover some of the packaging costs. I haven't tried shipping, do you like it? Thank you, I hope I do well this holiday season as well! :)
Thanks for sharing. Those thank you note cards are cute but huge and must cost a fortune. Seems like a lot to spend for just one card. You could make them the size of a business card and save yourself a tone of $. I don't think anyone is going to actually use one as a postcard. Personally I would never take the time for a hand written note either. Maybe for a high dollar item but I don't think a customer will ever expect that. You could handwrite a generic one, scan and print.
Hi Tasha, thank you for the comment! Each thank you note costs about twenty cents. You could obviously lower this cost if you purchase in a higher bulk rate. Personally, I don't mind thanking each customer individually as I am truly grateful that anyone would want to support me and my business. And, I am small enough yet where it's not an issue to do so. If my shop ever got "big", then I would consider having a thank you note printed right onto the card itself.
How much does it cost you to package each of those, vs. how much the cards sell for. For instance, if you only sell one card, I'm wondering how much of a profit you would make per order.
Thank you for the video, it's great. You should really have a tripod or second camera for a close up, so you don't have to hold the camera. (just some constructive critisizm) :)
Hi, that's awesome to hear! Shipping prices will vary depending on location, but I have Etsy calculate the shipping costs. You can do this in your listing settings. There's an option to have Etsy calculate shipping based on the weight and dimensions of your package.
I have a question... How do you "FEEL" about the "FREE" shipping from Etsy now I really wanted to open an Etsy store, but I can't make a profit, paying the shipping also... What do you think about this?
Hi Judi, thanks for the comment! Unfortunately, you would have include shipping price into your retail price. Because I have a lower price point, I can offer free shipping on orders over $35 or more, which honestly I am okay with.
@@bybrie I thought of that too, about including the shipping in the cost of the item, and when I mentioned that... people went crazy... mainly people that have never had a business, and don't understand that the shipping would come out of profit. Thank you so much for your reply.
Thanks Brie for responding to my post. I guess what I was trying to get at was that it seems that the expense of sending out one card far exceeds the income for that one card. IMHO, while I do appreciate the aesthetic look of the packaging, it does not seem cost effective to me from a business sense.
It really depends on the bulk size of the order. The more you order the per unit price will go down. So, when I order a large quantity, this is not too expensive. Thanks for your question and for watching!
Hi Bri, I too am an Etsy seller. Have you had problems with your customers complaining about shipping prices? I struggle with the rising cost of shipping. I too am a card maker and I want things to arrive in the same condition as when I make them.... Any thoughts/tips?
Hi Tami! I actually haven't had too many complaints on the shipping cost. It's kind of is what it is and I think customers understand that. I also offer free shipping on orders $35 and above to give customers an incentive. Hope this helps!
Thank you for your video. Does the post office charge extra for having the do not bend stickers on the package? And what does it usually cost to mail one card out to addresses in the US in the mailers you use? Thanks for your time!
Thanks for watching! No, the post office does not charge extra when you have do not bend stickers. These packages vary in price but have an average of $3.50. Hope this helps!
Thanks for sharing! Do you find those rigid mailers to be affordable to ship? When I try to use them I often run into outrageous postage rates for rigid vs soft envelopes, especially when shipping overseas.
Thank you for watching! It's a horse a piece. Starting rate is around $3.50 to ship first class. You can definitely ship cheaper if you're okay with risking the package being bent during transit.
by brie thanks for your reply! I just had to google “a horse apiece” and spent 15 minutes reading about the origins of that expression, which I’d never heard before!
Ramil Tendido have an idea! What do you want to sell? Save up some money to kickstart your business, I’d say around an idea and 200 dollars is all you need to help you start a business. Always ask for help! (I don’t have a business but I have an idea and I’m saving up, good luck lovely!)
Is it ok to print out the labels on regular paper and neatly tape them to the box/envelope? Because i want to start a shop, but I know I won’t ever buy a fancy label printer.
by brie I’m surprised how fast you answered, I wasn’t even done with the video! Thanks for your answer, it really means a lot to all of your customers how much effort you put into each package, and I’ve only seen you work for 15:13 minutes so that says a lot.
I enjoyed your helpful hints! This isn’t a complaint...just a suggestion.

looks beautiful! i saw you also have a serious printer, you print everything at home? what printer do you use? also - i love using stamps, i think you can make a do not bend one and it will save you some time :) beautiful i also liked the way you organized every product, very inspiring!
Love this video...very cute packaging!
thank you so much 🤗
Hi! Can you do a video on the shipping label setup? I’d love to get that printer and know how it works!
Emily Gillard hi Emily! That’s a great idea! I’ll put it on the list 👍🏼
I was wondering if you had to print out shipping labels from Etsy? I don’t have a printer and I’m using Royal Mail to ship my things
Love your packaging style
barbie's craft thank you!! 👍🏼👌🏼
@@myca2746 Yeah, of course a few will keep it, but the people who will will probably love and keep the blank card too.
@@FilippaSkog her business card was blank though. Thank you cards are a lot more personal and something that should be applicable to the buyer.
@@myca2746 I think you're missing the point. You don't have to defend her. No one's hating or being rude here, just giving some constructive criticism which all us small business owners tend to be thankful for.
Same here I have started my Etsy shop but I don't know how to get sale hope that in future will do something 🥰
Shabd Priya yes, good luck!! 😊
@@bybrie thanku so much 🥰
I LOVE the quality of your thank you post cards. Are you printing those yourself?
PaperPunkGrl thank you so much!! I get them printed at vistaprint 😊
This is such a nice calming video, I hope I can get to do that too in the future.. any tips on how to get started on etsy?
mina hey just get started! I think it’s such a big mental hurdle and once you start you get the momentum going :)
@@bybrie Thank you so much Brie! I'll do my best :)
mina hey you’ve got this 💪🏼
is it cost efficient to be adding all those extra stickers ? It seems like a lot of little things being added bring up the cost to produce and time spent. I never made stickers or anything so I don't know the cost to make so I'm just wondering if after everything there is any profit to actually be made?
I also know etsy charges so that also takes from the profit. Not sure if you have a video made on this already you can link. If not maybe a new video for you to make if you want.
Thanks for the comment! I think I will make a video on cost breakdown. There’s definitely a profit to be made, but yes you are cutting into that cost if you choose to include add on details, such as stickers.
I love this vlog! 💕 It's very helpful. Reminds me of Katnipp. You guys are seriously amazing.
*video lol
omg thank you so much - that is literally the best compliment I could ever get... I LOVE Katnipp! 😍
@@bybrie You really are! Excited for new content! 💕💕💕
Nice video! Love your Thank you cards :)
thank you so much! :)
Did you make your thank you cards? If so, you should make a video! I’d love to see a walkthrough so I can make my own 😊
Hi Savannah! I designed the thank you cards and had them printed at vistaprint.com 🙂
If my shop ever got "big", then I would consider having a thank you note printed right onto the card itself.
very nice and well put together video! do you make your own cards as well?
Thank you! I actually have them printed locally!
i love your videos!!!
CactusGaming thank you so much! 😍
Could you make a video on how you design your cards ?
that's a good idea for a video, yes!
Where do you get your Thank you and Yay! stickers? I love that font.
I designed them myself and have them printed at a local printer 👌🏼
Hey, I'm shipping stickers and plan on using rigid mailers since I don't want them to bend. How much did you pay for shipping?
Hi, that's awesome to hear! Shipping prices will vary depending on location, but I have Etsy calculate the shipping costs. You can do this in your listing settings. There's an option to have Etsy calculate shipping based on the weight and dimensions of your package.
love love love!!! very helpful and inspiring
Thank you so much!
Such a nice and fun video keep making ...lots of love ❤️
Thank you so much! ❤️
I have a question...
How do you "FEEL" about the "FREE" shipping from Etsy now
I really wanted to open an Etsy store, but I can't make a profit, paying
the shipping also... What do you think about this?
Hi Judi, thanks for the comment! Unfortunately, you would have include shipping price into your retail price. Because I have a lower price point, I can offer free shipping on orders over $35 or more, which honestly I am okay with.
@@bybrie
I thought of that too, about including the shipping in the cost of the item, and when I mentioned that... people went crazy... mainly people that have never had a business, and don't understand that the shipping would come out of profit.
Thanks for your opinion, it works for me!
Hi, is it expensive to do? For only 3/4 dollors per stickers, for exemple... Thank you! Nice job!
It really depends on the bulk size of the order. The more you order the per unit price will go down. So, when I order a large quantity, this is not too expensive. Thanks for your question and for watching!
Thanks for sharing . Where did you have your thank you cards made at ?
You're welcome! Thank you cards are printed at Vistaprint.
@@bybrie thanks for the reply :)
Your printer is amazing. A major need
Hope this helps!
by brie thank you so much for your response! I’m subscribing to your channel!
@@sarahgramelspacher3703 oh no, I'm so sorry!

How can u make an etsy shop?
Im only 13 years old and I think i need to have an own business or shop for my future
Ramil Tendido have an idea! What do you want to sell? Save up some money to kickstart your business, I’d say around an idea and 200 dollars is all you need to help you start a business. Always ask for help! (I don’t have a business but I have an idea and I’m saving up, good luck lovely!)
@@shirosflower Thank you very much! You offered such a big help for me... that is so nice of you. Goodluck to you too! THANK YOU!!😘😘😍😍
You need to be 18 i believe. Or at least have a bank act.
There are a lot of tutorials on how to create an Etsy shop :) Like @L Rose said, I think you might have to be at least 18 or have a bank account.
I love Mercari am eleven and I have made 1000 dollars reselling from thrift stores all u need is a phone mailer and items
This video was great, thank you so much for sharing! I'm inspired. :)
yay, happy to hear that! 🙂 thanks for watching!
Is it ok to print out the labels on regular paper and neatly tape them to the box/envelope? Because i want to start a shop, but I know I won’t ever buy a fancy label printer.
Maggie Bracken yes of course! That’s what I did in the beginning too 👍🏼
by brie I’m surprised how fast you answered, I wasn’t even done with the video! Thanks for your answer, it really means a lot to all of your customers how much effort you put into each package, and I’ve only seen you work for 15:13 minutes so that says a lot.
Now they will have to, Macy's is about to get into the crafters market!!
Im just 13 but i REALLY REALLY REALLY want to start my own etsy business i would sell handmade clay jewerly
Laila A my wallet😭
Hi Brie! Idk if you mentioned before but where do you get the boxes that you keep your cards/inventory in?
The cardboard?
hello! I actually got them from amazon :) here's the link: amzn.to/2G1wwgS
Does all the stuff that you put in the mail cover your cost? Is a really nice detail and a lot of effort in send it. :)
Gisi yes! Everything is calculated to make sure I have a profit.
very thoughtful packaging👏💖
London LiketheBridge thank you, I try!
Wow I’m starting an Etsy shop! Any recommendations?
My biggest recommendation is always to just start!
